This HillBuzz piece argues that Blagojevich is the target of the investigation:
In terms of Patrick Fitzerald, we’ve been told Blagojevich is, in fact, the highest level of target in this investigation. Fitzgerald has been leaning on Rezko to give up Blagojevich. There is no effort to lean on Blagojevich to give up anything on Mayor Daley or Obama. Blagojevich is who Fitzgerald has been after…so Blagojevich has no hope of Fitzgerald going easy on him, or of getting a deal for a reduced sentence down the line (if and when things come to that), because, unlike Rezko, there is no bigger fish in Fitzgerald’s sight.
Aside from Blagojevich, the only people being taken down by the Fitzgerald investigation will be people you have never heard of. One of the interesting things we heard tonight was that the prosecutor’s office is so booked solid with people to interview related to this case — in the mid-level range of importance politically — that even people like Jesse Jackson Jr. are being pushed back for their appointments…because everyone and their mother is rushing down to tell what they know, before they become targets too. People are singing like CRAZY, left and right. Fitzgerald’s office does not have enough investigators to interview them all in fast manner.Hmm. You think one of those songbirds might sing a song of Obama's ties to Blago?
It is nevertheless the case that Obama and his cronies are sure acting guilty. First, we had the yarn about there being no contact between Team Obama and the governor re: the senate seat. We also had the (lesser-known) take-back of Rahm Emanuel's brag that Blago's campaign was headed by a small cabal including Rahm and Obama.
The feeling on the ground here is that, once again, WORM comes into play in terms of What Obama Really Meant…as in, he first says that no one on his staff talked to the governor about the Senate seat. What Obama Really MEANT to say was that in the use of the word “talked”, Obama really MEANT to say “no one talked about exchanging anything valuable for Blagojevich to pick one of Obama’s preferred candidates, as listed for Blagojevich by Emanuel”. Obama did not MEAN to say no one had been talking to Blagojevich, but that no one had been talking about exchanging anything valuable. All we can say is, this WORM stuff needs to stop because Obama won the election, and now the hard part comesOf course, there are still Cheetoheads out there who insist that anyone who would tie Obama to Blagojevich must be racist...

I have no doubt Fitzgerald was not going after Obama. It's just not his style to insert himself into the political process, if anything he errs in the opposite direction.
But that may not matter. This morning NPR did a piece on the pending impeachment proceedings on Blago, and people were apparently unanimous in agreement this was going to take a very long time, months at the very least, and the standard of proof was not being met, yadda yadda yadda. NPR, alas, left out the obvious line of questioning: might this unease about impeaching Blagojevich have something to do with the strong possibility Blago has dirt on many of the people who would be casting that vote?
And, if you were in his shoes, would you not be expecting the "Scooter Treatment" (i.e., at least a commutation, if not an outright pardon) in return for keeping your mouth shut?
The funny thing here is that with everyone nervously prodding Blagojevich to quietly step down and fade from the headlines, he seems determined to brazen it out and nobody in the media seems willing to attribute this to anything other than him being "crazy". I would be staying put, too, if I were in position to take a lot of people down with me...
Joe, I find this post an example of one of your most redeeming qualities. (Seriously.)
When reality signals one of your pet theories is likely incorrect, you admit that likelihood. You are no dead-ender, and appear to be much more (ultimately) grounded in reality than many, and maybe most.
Perhaps the corollary to this post is that PF isn't entirely the boyscout straight arrow, let justice be done though the heavens may fall, kind of guy many have assumed he was. And perhaps this is just additional evidence of that, just as his failure to run the Libby connection up the chain of command, as was fervently hoped for (and CLAIMED to be the case), might have been an earlier example.
That is, not that he couldn't, or shouldn't, but that he isn't, and won't.

Obama has released the preliminary results from his 'internal investigation'.
Naturally, he's delivered another murky, seemingly carefully worded statement.
The actual findings won't be released until Christmas week. (Way to bury any unfavorable news!!!)
I swear, replace Obama's name with Bush, and the left would be having a great time 'parsing' (to use Somerby's language) each and every statement as a sign of absolute guilt.
Curious times, my friends.
When the guys at Hillbuzz use the line "feeling on the street is" thy have been dead wrong. Fitzgerald may not be after Obama per se, (and that has nothing to do with "injecting himself in the political process") -- he goes where his case leads him, though -- and if it leads to Obama because of information he gets from Blago he is obligated to follow it.
Mike I've got to think that if the Illinois legislature wanted to impeach Blagojevich they could get it done today. They even could convict him, today. The fact that they haven't done this yet makes me question their motives and their competence.
It is plain to see that Blagojevich does not have nor ever had the best interests of the people of Illinois at heart. He may or may not be clinically insane but he certainly is completely unfit to govern. The people of Illinois deserve better even if they voted for the scoundrel.
I personally wouldn't say that Obama is in the clear! At this point with what is known, Obama has a lot to worry about and by watching his behavior and those around him he'll show concern. He actually sits on a mointain of trouble that most haven't yet surfaced. Plus some of what he is linked to is being blocked and covered up so no one is to the wiser at this point. But these other areas are still growing and at any time expected to pop. When they start, expect more questions to be raised.
Some of these other areas have the potential of taking down the entire criminal organization AND THEY KNOW IT!
Don't forget I was in a family for more than 26 years who are deeply involved. My youngest son is involved with Rezko to my dismay.
Joe, I will assure you that when these other issues start to surface, no one is going to believe it. It will be series of "Oh MY God" days for everyone.

I want to know how they know that Blago is the top of the food chain for Fitz. Is that just a bunch of Illinoisians whistling past the graveyard, or is it rooted in something genuine?
"...there are still Cheetoheads out there who insist that anyone who would tie Obama to Blagojevich must be racist..."
Joe,
Let's not also forget the Gore/Obie backed Greek Madame's role over at Barffington Post and her "new media" role in spinning glorious damage control for The One. Funny how the Chicago Trib tanks, Blago gets busted and Huff rolls into Chicago all at the same time with those Northern CA investors. (I wonder who's got stock options in HuffPo?)
Recall how Lady Huff and her poodle blogger were all swoony and chummy with Fitz at the Scooter Libby trial? We all know how that bipartisan sideshow turned out.
I'm waiting for Fitz to start singing on himself.
Holding breath, NOT.
I'm finding it soo funny that many people want to attack Fitz when he's after their guy, but praise him when he's after their opposition.
My gut feeling tells me Obama is involved in this crap. But the guy is careful. While I do not think he's at all clean, any information they do get on him is likely not to be anything serious. I don't like the fact that he's obviously lying about his contact with Blagojevich. If he's lying about that, then he must have done something. But, as I said, it's probabaly not that serious.
Reading some parts of the transcript it's likely that his aides will go down because they are reporting his preferences. Obama knows what's going on and what was said, though he may not have directly said it.
It's hard for me to believe that Obama won't wind up severely tainted by this mess, considering how hard the MSM is pushing the "Obama ties to Blago" angle. But it may very well be that getting Obama isn't on Fitzgerald's agenda.
I've been poking around Fitzgerald's previous history--other's would be in a much better position to comment, if only they would-- but he seems to have been very careful in protecting FBI and CIA informants-despite their clear involvement in criminal behavior. Even if they may have originally incited same criminal behavior. See his prosecution of the first bombing of the World Trade Center.
I believe Fitzgerald is very much an agent of deep government, whatever deep government might be. In a way, say, that Rove was not.
Obama, I think, has been an FBI, CIA informant for years. In fact that might be the real reason he is in Chicago.
And I gotta think that Reverend Wright's credentials as a genuine extremist are pretty suspect as well.
Everyone's pointed out that Bill Ayres seems to be conveniently positioned to be an informant/agent provocateur--
but Wright--all that KKK stuff. He was once the medic responsible for LBJ's on the spot health care. . .someone. . .somewhere. . .trusted this guy with more than the Sunday offering.
I would hope that Fitzgerald (or any prosecutor) wouldn't "target" anyone but would follow the evidence where it leads.
I seriously doubt that there is a smoking gun here with Obama's fingerprints on it. I never thought Obama was that stupid.
But I also want to point out that just because a person is innocent of a particular crime doesn't mean they are completely innocent.
I can't help but wonder if the recent legal complications had anything to do with Obama's appointment of Shaun Donovan as HUD secretary. Who is this guy? Is he another friend to slumlords and sleazebags, or is he on the square? The timing of the appointment, right after the Blago stuff, seems curious.

Re: The Lewinsky scandal - Was Clinton impeached for the act or for lying about it? Even if Obama is not caught in the act, why is the lying about it not an impeachable offense? I ask because I do not know.
The fate of our nation does not depend on the actions of a prosecutor and his team, nor on a single branch of government or part thereof. It depends on the mindful creativity, actions and intentions of each one of us.
I would have thought a site like Hillbuzz that regularly goes to the birth certificate and Larry Sinclair stuff wouldn't be part of your reading list. Any particular reason you think Hillbuzz has value, or did you just stumble upon this? (not being snarky, actually curious).
And another thing: should anything happen to the Democratic majority in Congress (Senate, not so much, but House is always vulnerable), you can be sure the Republicans will pick up where Fitzgerald left off and use their subpoena power (you know, that quaint little power the Dems used so pathetically during the last two years of the Bush admin) to the max.
So even if nothing rubs off on Obama this time (and PF does not appear to view his mandate as including revising election outcomes), he's not exactly in the clear, nor will he ever really be.
I read HillBuzz, too, but, keep in mind, they were absolutely convinced McCain was going to win. They seemed to go into a deep funk when that didn't quite pan out.
And Fitz didn't clear Obie, Obie did. Hell, everybody in jail would be innocent if they investigated themselves. And Obie's no reformer, he's an avoider. "What can we get away with, what can they prove?" Chicago-style politics as usual, minus the stupid.
As for Arne Duncan, he's Harvard, went to Australia to play basketball, born in Hyde Park, shoots hoops with Obie. Head of Chicago public schools 7 years, raised CPS elementary student rates 1.3% over 2007.
Does what he's told; long on theory, short on experience.
Just like the city's low income, Jarrett/Rezko influenced housing, Chicago public schools still suck.
Obie's buddies: criminally incompetent.
Disinformation and propaganda are an art form. Blago is nuts, instead of very profane and blatant, Emanuel was just passing along some suggestions instead of telling them with a list of who was "acceptable" to PEBO, and Fitzgerald is an overzealous fanatic rather than the most gifted prosecutor of our time. This is the same methodology that was used during the primary to diminish opponents and blur what is/did transpire.
Illinois is a state that has had so much corruption that the insiders/conspirators do not even seem to realize most of what they do is illegal. They seem to think it is their due. The press is now putting out ridiculous stories that Blago was just running his mouth and did nothing illegal such as conspiracy, and Obama can walk through garbage without getting stinky.
Fitzgerald will not know where this is going until all of the rats lining up (he doesn't have enough investigators to talk to them all in a timely manner) are finished pointing fingers at each other and the cases can be lined up. At this level his prosecutions have to be slam dunks so to speak as he cannot afford a miss.
Joe I have new additional information that you may find interesting.
Jesse Ventura former Gov of Min has a video out explaining what happened while he was Gov. He says that he was visited by the CIA many times and told to replace retirees with appointed CIA people. Watch this video here:

Pleasae note that while married, my ex-brother-in-law who is the money man behind Clyde O'Connor explained to me that the family being a CIA Asset never has to worry about being prosecuted. Clyde is still on the run after being caught.

Also, I was told that in the Illinois area including Illinois Politics, there are many CIA operatives. I've mentioned in other posts that the family talked about CIA Stringers in the major Newspapers and radio stations.
From what I know about Obama, NO he isn't in the clear.
I can't speak about Fitz regarding his position with CIA and FBI. I can say that Fitz (from the news) seems to have a close working relationship with a Special FBI task force. Now if the CIA is doing bad stuff, who knows?

I don't think it matters if Obama is connected or not. In politics, the narrative always reigns supreme. And we're seeing that narrative being set right now.
In Obama we have another lawyer like Clinton. With Clinton it depended on the meaning of "is," and with Obama so far it's what "talk" means. There is going to be a lot more of this. We'll need tea leaves, "body language experts," crystal balls and Ouija boards. Whatever Bush's failings, the man is plain spoken.
Actually, Charles, if you look up the actual context of Clinton's "meaning of 'is'" remark, he was not parsing or weaseling. The paragraph as a whole makes logical sense. Taking one ill-formed sentence out of context to make him look bad is unfair.
The statement came from his nationally televised grand jury testimony. At the time, everyone understood the point he was making. His approval ratings shot UP that day.
It was only in later years that anti-Clinton revisionist historians tried to create the impression that "slick Willie" had alienated the public with that remark. The accusation simply is not true.
And "Hillbuzz" said McCain was going to win Pennsylvania big !
Not much of a source.
