"Get in their faces"

In Pittsburgh, a mugger robbed a 20 year old woman named Ashley Todd at an ATM machine. When he noted a McCain bumper sticker on her vehicle, he flew into a rage, punched her, kicked her and carved a B into her face.

Also: In Seminole County, Florida, an unknown assailant shot up the home of Rog Coverly, the manager of the local McCain campaign headquarters.

Coverely said he has taken about 300 calls concerning stolen or vandalized McCain signs in the area.

"It says this campaign is getting vicious," Coverely said.

Coverely said it appears Democrats are becoming more aggressive in the county.
Can we fairly draw any conclusion about the candidate from this attacks -- and from previous incidents, such as the cowardly Obama supporter in New York who beat up an older woman carrying a McCain sign? I think we can.

First, one need not be a professional psychologist to understand that the fanatics have a formed a hallucinatory view of Obama as a salvific figure. He is the projection of all their hopes, the key figure within their soterology. They feel that his election will somehow ameliorate their sense of self-loathing. By physically attacking McCain supporters, attack the parts of themselves that they find intolerable.

I think similar motives drove (for example) the Germans during Krystallnacht. Those who led the atrocities could not bring themselves to admit that they were the aggressors in World War I, that they had lost the war, and that they were responsible for the subsequent mismanagement of their nation's economy. So they projected their sense of self-hatred onto the Eternal Other.

By this point, everyone outside Kossack faithful must admit that Obama has given rise to a Mao-like cult of personality. He has never done anything to rein in these Messianic illusions -- in fact, he has fostered them. That attitude gives him indirect responsibility for the violence committed and threatened by his followers.

I've received death threats, and so have many others. Such is the political climate engineered by Barack Obama. Is anyone surprised that the threats have finally given way to fired shots and physical assaults?

I can only wonder what the future holds. Obama reversed himself on FISA, which means that he wants the power to tap the phones of all opponents. In Missouri, the Obama movement used Sheriffs and prosecutors to put together a "truth squad" to intimidate critics of Barack Obama. Obama makes no secret of his desire to erect a massive "civilian security force." And the RAND Corporation was tasked with considering the best ways to implement a new domestic intelligence agency.

These ingredients -- a cult of personality, new tools of state repression, unfettered snooping -- all point in a dangerous direction. The threat can be reduced to two words: Power and ego.

Shame no articles or blogposts I've seen use the word allegedly to describe this.

More importantly, it was a robbery. You've got to admit that the thief did a good job shifting focus away from the fact he was a mugger.

Sorry, Joe. I should have said that it was an alleged B. Allegedly carved into the lady's alleged face as visible in the alleged photo which you can allegedly see at the top of this alleged post.

"the thief did a good job shifting focus" -- what crap! He was not so calculating. This was an act of rage. If you can't see that, you are a disgusting Obot fanatic.

Canadian here, thanks. Got my country's politic issues to worry about.

I'm not saying it is the case, just that the possibility exists. Brian Douglas Wells went through hell just to rob a bank with a couple others for what really amounts to little money.

Imagine what will happen if Obama gets the presidency and him and his followers find out who voted for McCain, because a vote for McCain, even if McCain loses will still be considered an affront to the almighty great Messiah Obama. Imagine also what will happen if Obama gets the presidency and him and his followers find out the names and addresses of people who talked about him on websites. I can imagine that old Messiah will not sleep until every anti-Obama person is hunted down and dealt with. Bloody Obama will be his name in the underground press.

I fundamentally agree with this blog entry - including the core conclusions you argue. There's a disturbing rigid fanaticism on the part of a large number of Obama supporters. I've seen quite a bit of it personally.

However, for now, I'm withholding judgment (on way or another) on the particulars of the Ashley Todd case.
One skeptic (Malkin, on the Right):
I'm not arguing that it's not true - just that I don't know right now.

On the topic of Obama, and the behavior he's precipitating in his followers, I think Arthur Silber is worth reading:

Can you prove she isn't lying? Huh? Huh?

What about her history? Have we checked her school, medical and criminal records yet? Have we interviewed all her ex-boyfriends? Has her garbage been searched?

A woman getting robbed leaving a Pittsburgh ATM sounds like a pretty fishy story. Who ever heard of something like that happening?

She's a white McCain supporter so she must be a racist.

I say we haul her off to Gitmo and waterboard her until she tells the truth!

I've been saying for some time that the permission Obama has given for the gynocidal rage of his supporters is going to result in assaults and murder.

As luck would have it, this is the day I volunteered at county Republican headquarters to make calls on behalf of McCain and Palin and to be a poll-watcher on election day. (They were pleased to have me there, even though I'm an Independent and told them I would not work for down-ticket Republicans.)

The town I live in has more than twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans. Suddenly I'm feeling very exposed. What was I thinking?

Joseph, you have been on (cannon)fire! Keep it up.

I particularly appreciate the reminder that Obama instructed his followers to "get in their faces."

Remember, this is the second incident of an Obot smashing a McCain supporter's face. And the last time he told the police he didn't know why...he just "snapped."

Have you read the 60 page paper on Obama's use of mass hypnosis techniques? It looks as if his suggestions hit deep in a couple of cases.

"I've been saying for some time that the permission Obama has given for the gynocidal rage of his supporters is going to result in assaults and murder."

Trying to blame Obama for this unfortunate event is amazingly pathetic. What you're saying is exactly the kind of inflammatory rhetoric that brings violence. Exactly like Palin or Bachmann claiming that there's good Americans and bad Americans who hate America. 2 class of Americans, the real and the false... last time I remember hearing that was in Germany.

The Palin / McCain camp is not responsible for anything their supporters do and Obama is directly responsible for everything anyone claiming or suspected of supporting him do.

Joseph, there's something very Tawna Brawley about this story. I would have kept my ten-foot pole eleven feet from it, till the alleged facts wash out.

the B is for... Barry ?

And why is it in reverse ? looks like it was "carved" while looking in a mirror. It would explain why she is refusing medical care...

from the comments on

"I'm calling bullshit on this one. There are plenty of fishy details out on the interwebs to dig through, so let me provide some personal perspective. I live less than 2 blocks from this ATM, and there's no way this could've happened without someone noticing/intervening. It's way too public for someone to get robbed, knocked to the ground, and have a “B” etched into her face. I'm fairly confident of this."

Anonymous said...

doesn't look like it's real.

The B doesn't look like someone carved it on her face in a violent robbery. It doesn't make sense. And she was not moving while the calligraphy artist was carving a reversed B while looking in a mirror ? and why a B ?

And her "twittering" about the event is suspicious...

Well, I doubt the injuries are fake. The police would've noticed immediately. As far as the "backwards" B...the image of the photo could be flipped. This happens all the time. For an interesting example google Obama images and see how many have his mole on the left side of his nose and how many have his mole on the right side of his nose (the pictures where it's not airbrushed out, that is).

But I think it more likely that it's an upside-down B rather than a backwards B. If her assailant were holding her head down from above the B would be upright to him.

Finally...I can completely relate to refusing medical help till the next day. I'm not saying whether this was absolutely a real attack or a hoax, but after a trauma or injury getting to one's own bed can be more compelling than a trip to the hospital.

About the medical treatment: I once saw a man beaten nearly senseless by an attacker who wanted his car keys. This occurred in the phone booth area of a Denny's in Woodland Hills, CA, around 3 in the morning. The victim refused to get medical help, although he obviously needed it. He was in worse shape than Ashley.

About the depth of the cut: I don't think the assailant meant to scarify. A permanent mark usually requires a cut of about a half an inch. He simply scratched her skin to prove his point. The job would not take more than a couple of seconds.

The position of the letter is explained by the presupposition that he knocked her to the ground and stood over her head.

I've seen shiners that looked exactly like that.

The idea of a girl arranging her own wounds seems ridiculous. I mean, this sort of scenario was pretty darned unbelievable when we saw it in "Dirty Harry" and "Fight Club," and the characters in those movies were A) male and B) nuts. A girl like this? I simply do not believe it.

I fully expect the Kossacks to publish the lady's home address and phone number, as well as any other dirt they can find on her.

Overall, I'm fairly skeptical on the Ashley Todd incident.

As a cop writing in to Malkin's blog noted - the "B" seems "far to[o] shallow and clean". The assailant was said to have a knife. My instinct is that a wound carved with a knife (while Todd would presumably have been struggling) would look different from this.

Her MySpace page (now set to private) also contains the following (from July 1, 2008):
"Thankfully my closest of friends have assured me that when I finally am a victim of a political assassination or brutal murder for running my mouth, that they will be honest at my funeral."
Also, from her MySpace page, it looks like she tried to run as a write-in candidate for Texas State Governor.
Copies of the MySpace pages can be found here:
Googling appropriate word combination (taken from the document above) will pull up the text from these pages at Ashley Todd's MySpace site (even though her site is now set to private, the Google database still retains the text) - which appears to confirm the authenticity of the pdf copy.

Several people have noted the reversed "B" - but that could result from a flipped image, or if she were on her back (upside down) while such an incident was happening (she notes being kicked - which implies being on the ground).

A couple of people have noted that this is a rather high traffic area (making the story less plausible). However, one native of the area also notes:
"CA: just so you know that's a really high traffic area right on the edge of a really bad part of town and oddly enough, it's where they filmed a lot of that movie 10th & Wolf
Ace: thanks. does the fact it's a high traffic area make this seem more unlikely?
CA: bit of both
a lot of that traffic is sketchy
we're all surprised it happened at 9PM
that's pretty early
but there's a lot of bars and restaurants around there
I used to work 3 blocks away, and there were shootings in that area like every month
so the idea someone would be mugging people isn't totally inconceivable in that area."

Also, after an assault, victims often behave quite strangely (things like refusing medical attention, twittering, etc. aren't really that unusual). So I wouldn't take that as strong evidence of anything.

In the city where I live, a stranger-assault rape occurred a couple years ago, in which the victim's story (and apparent circumstances) also seemed quite sketchy/not credible. There seemed to be problems with the story, the woman was rather odd, etc. The police didn't believe her and the DA ended up filing a false reporting charge against her. Then (about a year later) evidence emerged that fully corroborated her account and the assailant (who had also engaged in other sexual assaults) was apprehended and convicted.

So, regarding Ashley Todd, I'm pretty skeptical. But I think caution should be exercised against dismissing her account too quickly.

Why is this story about a small crime that sadly happens hundreds of time a year is making national headline ? who is it serving ?

I don't understand what the actions of a criminal felon have to do with the current political campaign. How can Obama be responsible for that ? Do you really believe that this dyslexic mugger was thinking "Obama told us to get into their face, that's what I will do ?". How are these cheap allegations better than the one against Hillary you decried so much?

If I had to choose a victim for mugging, the last person i would target is a McCain supporter, we all know more of them carry guns.

and what is the B for ?

So as not to leave the wrong impression - I think the sentence I quoted above, from Ashley Todd's MySpace page, would most appropriately be interpreted as tongue in cheek (it's from a rant entry).

G, the wound looks right to me. You could fake up a photo in photoshop, but to accomplish that result in real life, you wowuld have to break skin.

This may surprise you, but there are people who cut themselves and each other with exacto blades as a fetishistic kink. You can see photographs of their work in books and so forth. Others do it as a form of psychological release. Yes, I've seen that sort of thing in the flesh. Nothing about the B seems unconvincing to me.

I'd also note that the wound is on the cheek. That would hurt like the devil. If the wound were on the forehead, which has fewer nerve endings, I would be more likely to suspect self-administration. (Similarly, a superficial cut on the upper forearm is barely felt, while a similar cut on the fleshy underside of the forearm really stings.)

Virtually everyone who cuts himself or herself tries a practice cut or two first. Someone doing that sort of thing for the first time would start with the less painful areas of the body.

Self-inflicted? I just don't see that as a likelihood.

Jesus. Sometimes I think Obots are so dumb they can't pick their noses without an instructional video.

It's not clear to me one way or the other.
If she were struggling, I'd expect a messier wound.
I've known cutters. The level of pain is a matter of how much they dissociate.

Here's a cached copy of Ashley Todd's MySpace page. A few things struck me.

The Republican Party is just a bunch of white racists. It is filled with a bunch of Angry White Guys (and Gals) who think the 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act ruined America because it made it a lot harder for whites from Ireland, England, France, Germany, Italy, etc. to immigrate to the U.S. and made it a lot easier for the Chinese, Indians, Jamaicans, Mexicans, Egyptians, etc. to immigrate to the U.S. What these racists don't GET is that the 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act (Thank You Senator Ted Kennedy) greatly increased Diversity in the U.S. which has made OUR Nation stronger and a much more multicultural place to live. Before 1965 Whites of European descent made up 88% of the U.S. population. Now whites only make up 65% of the U.S. population and by 2042 they will only make up 49% of the population. By 2100 Whites of European descent will only make up about 30% of the U.S. population and also by the year 2100 only 3% of the World Population will be White. The 2008 Election is just a turning point in American History though. By the end of this century white Europeans will be out of power in the United States(FINALLY!) and then we can finally end WHITE PRIVILEDGE and can get REAL Affirmative Action, REAL Reparations, REAL Change, and begin to redistribute wealth and property back to those who deserve it. Unfortunately, this won't happen until the White Kids who are in strollers and Elementary School today are in their 60's and 70's. The World is Flat. The white racist Republicans just don't seem to get it!

From a story on the KDKA website:

"Police said the woman, 20-year-old Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, refused medical attention. An officer saw the injury, but the police report did not describe its size or severity, a police spokeswoman said."

Excuse me? A woman reports a mugging and the is no description of her injuries on the police report? How does this make sense?

madamab said...

Do people realize that McCain and Palin spoke to this woman personally? And issued statements? And so did Obama?

According to McCain, Palin, the Obama campaign and CNN, this happened. If you doubt the story, prove it didn't happen. Otherwise, attacking the victim seems like Rovian, Joe The Plumber bullsh*t to me.

Just sayin'.

Life is not a show on TV. A lot of cops where I live will brush off a woman's complaint as irrational hysteria or retaliation for unrequited love. Stalking by a stranger for example is usually brushed off as retaliation for being dumped or maybe having a vivid imagination.
So I don't know if her story is true although I can believe it and I don't know if the police treated her as a credible human being or an hysterical exaggerating female.

Obviously, none of you marched against the war if you wanted to see openly hostile members of a particular political party (and I ain't talkin' about the Democrats). In fact maybe you were some of the people who were screaming and spitting at us. My car, which had a peace bumper sticker on it was egged and then, a few weeks later, had a window smashed out.
Meanwhile, I'd hear how George W. Bush was a "good Christian" and how "Jesus would bomb Iraq." You supported a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people, while mocking and disparaging anyone who opposed it and now you are trying to play the victim (and you couldn't even find a real victim). Get a life.
