Last night I linked to Ken Mehlman's last ditch piece, and just wanted to emphasize how the points he attempts to make there have become, instead of the powerful talking points Rove and his minions have relied on for years now, insults to every thinking person's intelligence.
(To read the rest, click "Permalink" below)
Mehlman was just interviewed on MSNBC, and he's spinning his pointy little head off. For instance, he's trying to assert that Allen will take VA, based on Allen's long history in politics in the state and a high level of enthusiasm. But when confronted with the fact that last night 6000 turned out for Webb's final rally, compared to only 250 for Allen, he of course was forced to backstroke. Fascinating to watch; always changes the subject to Democratic sins. I kept waiting for someone to make the comparison of this sticky Allen factoid to Rove's clearly piqued response to FL gubernatorial candidate Crist's no show for a Bush visit rally. So many situations of reality not conforming to their so-called "plans" must overload the well-greased system.
Mehlman also claims that the GOP has nothing to do with the robocalls (as did Mary Matalin earlier; oh, they all do it, she and others try to claim), and then stoops to a tornado of spinning on what Democrats supposedly did in 2004. Yeah, I know what I am, but what are you? Nya-nya-nya. And he won't concede that the House will go blue. When pressed to be specific on his reasoning, he refers to the selective limp polls that showed minimal gains for Repugs yesterday, while ignoring the ones that showed the opposite. Then he lists all those same things that continue to insult thinking Americans, taxes, North Korea, etc.
He left out the Iraq war, however, and then was again openly confronted with Clinton's speech last night where he pointed out that these guys can't do anything right. Mehlman would only admit frustration with the time it's taken to win, excusing Bush with the demand for adapting tactics (that strategy/policy v. tactics bloviation), reverting to the Battle of the Bulge, etc., blablabla. And then he tries to scare us with the possibility that "Iraq could become another Afghanistan."
Now, that one is really an insult, or just plain stupid. I'll go for both; most Americans know that we're losing Afghanistan to the Taliban, so is Mehlman trying to say we need to keep Iraq from suffering this same fate?? Or is he trying to refer to how the Taliban was once the harbor of al-Qaeda, before we got there? Or is he just trying to make that "connection" again, the one no one with any intelligence has bought for years now? It's a very confusing talking point that honestly rivals what the Repugs tried to make of Kerry's reference to Bush's stupidity in getting us into Iraq, despite all his education. Kerry's education point - which was oddly accurate, when you think about it - actually makes this all so ironic, doesn't it?
If Mehlman's spin cycle is the best they can do out there, it's pretty easy to see why they're in so much trouble.
The good news is that the VA Secretary of State has contacted the FBI to investigate voter intimidation with robocalls. Republican talking heads are trying to claim this is all normal, but I personally do not recall a past election with such openly illegal dirty tricks.
Which will ultimately serve Democrats. I know that may sound counter-intuitive, but consider: The more overt and blatant the theft, the more these criminals can be exposed at this point. The tide is turning, and all that corruption that has flown under the radar for around half a century now is getting exposed, thanks to the blatant hubris and arrogant entitlement of our Keystone Kabal. They're so criminal and so desperate, they're no doubt about it going to resort to their dirtiest tricks, and no doubt about it, they're going to get caught. Maybe not on all counts, but enough, enough to get them run out of town, run out of town for insulting our intelligence.
And Josh brings up my question: What was the October surprise?? If I were Rove's Republican audience, I'd be demanding to know; was Hussein's death penalty it?? Don't insult my intelligence.
Everyone is just fed up. Voting Americans are fed up. We're fed up with having their intelligence insulted. It all comes round to that wisdom of the Republican founder, you really can't fool all the people all the time. We're just not as stupid as they think we are, nor are we as stupid as they are.
