Bill Clinton on "Don't ask, don't tell" and more

We've had this same argument on this humble blog during the primaries. Quite a few Obama supporters, imbued with an utterly false idea of the history of the 1990s, insisted that Bill Clinton was the enemy of gays serving in the military, when he was really trying to stave off anti-gay legislation that would have passed by an overwhelming majority. (Hat top to MYIQ at the Confluence.)

The video also discusses DOMA, the Defense Of Marriage Act. Compare what Clinton has to say with Obama's recent actions, as described here. Obama had squishily denounced both gay marriage and DOMA during the primaries (a neat trick!), only to become Doctor DOMA after attaining office.

Here's part of the rest of the speech. I don't agree with his optimism, but he still has much to say.

If you look carefully you'll notice something missing.

(There are no teleprompters on that stage.)

There is also one thing that the Big Dawg didn't say during his one hour speech:

"uh"

Thank you for posting those, Joseph.

I find President Clinton's intelligence and willingness to engage arguments very refreshing. I wanted to see what some others thought and came up with...

"...and then we got to the Big Dog himself. President Clinton spoke for about an hour. If you have never seen him speak, … President Clinton is the most seductive human on the face of the planet. His magic has always been his ability to connect with the listener on a personal level which is nearly unmatched.[snip]

"President Clinton had some good points. His main thrust was things have changed. We have turned a corner which was not available to him during his career. The nation has changed in terms of being more accepting of multicultural, multi-religious ways of living than in the last 40 years. He laid out the vision of as much as 40 years of Democratic governance, based on the underlying demographics and the policies of the Republican Party and what their base requires of them. President Clinton pointed out the litmus test for Republicans leaves more the population of the United States out than it allows in. This is the nature of a failing movement and party.

"He made a plea for all of the Netroots to support the public option and health care reform. He took a stand for any kind of bill over a good bill.[snip]" Here.

On the issue raised in that last paragraph. Short, but 35 comments back and forth. Well worthwhile, imo.

Critics including House Republican leader John Boehner, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and liberal Democrat Lee Siegel have recently pointed to Section 1233 of the House healthcare reform bill, on "end-of-life counseling," as an actual or potential encouragement for euthanasia against the elderly.

I think I might have seen some writing that that provision is now out, but I don’t know. It should be beaten to pieces and incinerated, and the ashes buried. I’m not convinced it is, at best, anything but biding its time, waiting to strike. If that.

Promotion of euthanasia isn't part of Section 1233? Bullshit. August 12, 2009

Section 1233 of the House healthcare reform bill, which is very much in the news right now:

What an unfortunate coincidence that such incongruent current legislation would happen to have the same numbers!
