Living Ensign

You surely know about Nevada senator John Ensign, the family-values Jesus Christer caught out in an affair. Well, Marcy Wheeler and co. have done the best bit of blog-sleuthing I've seen in a while. Turns out that Ensign's DC abode (shared with Senator Tom Coburn) may very well have been owned by the secretive theocratic group called The Family. To paraphrase a noted Jewish after-dinner speaker: My Father's house should be a house of prayer and not a den of nooky.

Am I hypocritical for giggling at Ensign's plight despite my continuing admiration for Bill Clinton? Not really, and for two reasons. 1. I allowed myself quite a few giggles when the Monica thing became public. 2. Back then, Ensign called for Clinton's resignation.

Anthony Lappé, writing at Alternet:
It sounded like a reality show on the PAX network: Six conservative politicians living in a DC townhouse owned by a fundamentalist Christian organization. What happens when you stop being polite and start finding Jesus?

In April, the AP broke the story that six U.S. congressmen were paying the bargain rate of $600 a month each to live together in a swanky DC townhouse owned by a secretive fundamentalist Christian group known as the Fellowship or the Foundation. Many, understandably, were curious. Who is this organization, and what is its agenda?

The group, the AP reported, is best known for holding the annual National Prayer Breakfast at the White House, which offers scores of national and international heavy hitters the opportunity to praise God in close proximity to the President. In the article, the congressmen boarding at the house denied owing any allegiance to the group, and several professed ignorance of even the most basic facts about the organization. Little else was reported about the group's history, motives or backers.

There is a reason for that. The Fellowship is one of the most secretive, and most powerful, religious organizations in the country. Its connections reach to the highest levels of the U.S. government and include ties to the CIA and numerous current and past dictators around the world.

Peter, they leave that group alone, as well as the Bohemian Grove...but let the women get together to form their own version of the males-only Bohemian Grove and Sotomayor is hounded out of it.

I understand that the group Judge Sotomayor joined does not restrict membership on the basis of sex -- they just happened to have no men among their membership. Stephen Colbert has said he plans to join.

While I personally don't have much use for philanderers I'm not all that interested in them either. Mostly this should be between the people involved.

The only time I find the "affair" of interest is when some hypocritical asshat who pointed finger at another is caught-out. Then I want them to suffer all the consequences not so much of their act, but of their hypocrisy.

Peter of Lone Tree is linking an interview with Jeffrey Sharlet, who wrote a book on The Family- in-depth research on the history behind the group and their ties to the government.

Gee, they "just happened" to? If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you....
