A friend to this blog directed my attention to this story.
People with homes raise dogs and cats. When they lose the home, where do the pets go? To the animal shelter. The massive epidemic of canine and feline homelessness is one indicator of how the economy is really doing.

Within the last month, I've gotten two emails through my small network of abandoned momma cats (pregnant) needing homes. So, yeah, this is huge. People are moving out and just leaving animals to fend for themselves.
There is a special place in Hell for people who abandon their pets.
Have a heart, myiq. If you're kicked out of your home, you can sleep in your car or in a city shelter. But what about your labrador?
Okay...I just re-read my comment. No, I don't have a network of momma cats. Emails from my small network about abandoned momma cats.

It will be a cold day in hell my animals ever become homeless. I will before they are.
At least I have family who could take care of them at least on a temporary basis.
Ms. Sophie (Pawsible Deniability) almost posted about this a couple weeks ago, but was so upset she couldn't bring herself to finish the entry.
That's for doing what she could not.
Our local food bank accepts gifts of pet food and other pet items so that the homeless can keep pets with them.
I would never abandon or give up my pets. But I have resources, family, friends (not to mention savings). I can't blame folks who bring their pets to an animal shelter when they lose their home and cannot bring the pets to an apt. which won't allow it -- or are having problems feeding themselves and the rest of their family. But those who just abandon the animals -- they truly are the lowest of the low.
Adopt if you can and if you can't and have a little change, please throw some to your local shelter or rescue group. It is shameful but folks are throwing away horses and other large animals as well.
