Take the inauguration test

Yo-Yo Ma was playing variations of the famed Shaker hymn at noon, the very moment when Obama should have taken the oath. When the big moment finally occurred five minutes after schedule, Obama and/or the Chief Justice fumbled the wording of the oath of office. Bad omens.

An even worse omen: President Obama said that programs will end because the very concept of government's functionality is open to question. An actual liberal (which Obama is not) would have have found the posing of that "question" ludicrous.

Did anyone else see what I saw on FOX? After the ceremonies, as Dubya was leaving the platform, he turned around and blew a kiss. Sweartagod, the guy looked as gay as a spring lamb. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Meanwhile, Dick Cheney showed up in a black wheelchair, having completed his transition to James Bond supervillain. As I write, he is heading off to his underground lair to work on his scheme to blow up the solar system.

Truly, we have entered into the Age of Surrealism.

In that spirit, I give you the Presidential Inauguration Speech Test. Your task is identify the source of each quote. Does the quote come from...

A. Barack Obama's speech upon taking the oath of office,
B. The script for Manos: The Hands of Fate, or
C. The script for Troll 2?

Print out the test. After each quotation, mark A, B or C. A word of warning: If you take this test and get more than three wrong, your kidneys will explode.

* * *

1. "It has not been a path for the fainthearted."

2. "If my father discovers you here, he'd cut off your little nuts and eat them."

3. "Our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please."

4. "The woman is all we want! The others must die! They ALL must die! We do not even want the woman!"

5. "There is no phone here, sir. The Master does not approve of such devices."

6. "Reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day."

7. "Do you see this writing? Do you know what it means? Hospitality. And you can't piss on hospitality. I won't allow it!"

8. "We are the keepers of this legacy."

9. "Not dead the way you know it. He is with us always. Not dead the way you know it. He is with us always."

10. "Your power fails you!"

11. "These are the indicators of crisis..."

12. "But just remember when I was your age, I really did suffer from hunger."

13. "It'll go easier on you if you eat them. Otherwise, we'll be forced to kill you violently."

14. "What is demanded then is a return to these truths."

15. "You have failed us Torgo. For this you must die."

16. "This is the price and the promise."

17. "With a voracity than has no equal on Earth."

18. "I take care of the place while the Master is away."

19. "I thank President Bush for his service to our nation."

20. "You have caused enough trouble. I think your service to us is at its end now."

21. "But how are we going to make grandpa come?"

22. "I stand here today humbled by the task before us."

23. "Grandpa! Are you really in Hell?"

24. "But master, you have six wives. Why can't I have one for myself?"

25. "Our capacity remains undiminished."

26. "I'm the victim of a nocturnal rapture. I have to release my lowest instincts with a woman."

27. "These men and women struggled and sacrificed..."

28. "He has left this world, but he is with us always. No matter where we go he is with us."

29. "This is the source of our confidence."

30. "I'm Sheriff Gene Freak."

I may give the answers in the comments section later. If I remember to do it.

Another bad omen:

"our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age"

Bye bye, Social Security! No room for you in our new age of hard choices, sacrifice, and personal responsibility...

Another bad omen:

The new White House website is up, and here's what it says about Obama's and Biden's Israel policy:

Israel

Ensure a Strong U.S.-Israel Partnership: Barack Obama and Joe Biden strongly support the U.S.-Israel relationship, and believe that our first and incontrovertible commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, America's strongest ally in the region. They support this closeness, and have stated that the United States will never distance itself from Israel.

Support Israel's Right to Self Defense: During the July 2006 Lebanon war, Barack Obama stood up strongly for Israel's right to defend itself from Hezbollah raids and rocket attacks, cosponsoring a Senate resolution against Iran and Syria's involvement in the war, and insisting that Israel should not be pressured into a ceasefire that did not deal with the threat of Hezbollah missiles. He and Joe Biden believe strongly in Israel's right to protect its citizens.

Support Foreign Assistance to Israel: Barack Obama and Joe Biden have consistently supported foreign assistance to Israel. They defend and support the annual foreign aid package that involves both military and economic assistance to Israel and have advocated increased foreign aid budgets to ensure that these funding priorities are met. They have called for continuing U.S. cooperation with Israel in the development of missile defense systems.

I read that speech again, and was reminded of a short piece George Orwell wrote during a war where he mentioned a short-lived British propaganda slogan that ran "Your Sacrifice Will Bring About Our Victory", but was promptly pulled because it implied the people sacrificing and the people enjoying the fruits of victory might be two separate sets of people.

In fact, this could become the slogan of the Obama Administration: "Your Sacrifice Will Lead to Our Prosperity"...

I really want to give this guy a chance, but he keeps saying things that set off my alarm bells. If this guy really tries to implement policies which have been totally discredited throughout the world, i.e., privatization and Friedmanism, a lot of his supporters are going to turn their backs on him, and the country will continue on the road to ruin. He needs to quit trying to appease the extreme GOP right; they are hopeless, and start acting like a Democrat.

BHO is on the record stating that SS has a minor problem, whereas Medicare is a major problem.

SS is going nowhere, but will probably see some technical corrections that make it more affordable (e.g., raising the ceiling to which the 6.25% FICA applies, another year on the retirement age, changing the cpi formula, etc.).

BHO MAY have been advised to delay the oath past the noon hour, since the moon was void of course at that time. But I don't know if that slight delay was sufficient to correct that problem.
