Eyeless in Gaza

I've had a ton of harsh words for Larry Johnson, whose stance on Israel always struck me as far too hawkish. So these observations came as a welcome surprise...
Sorry, but the Israeli military is acting like a bunch of pathetic thugs rather than conduct themselves with professionalism and skill. You do not just kill Palestinians because you can. You kill the assholes shooting the rockets/missiles. Israel has the means to do that but clearly prefers killing large numbers of Palestinians. Sorry folks, but thems the facts.

I havnt been following events in the ME aqs closely as I should, but a while ago, some folk were warning that the Israelis might take it on themselves to deal with Iranian nuclear facilities before the handover of office in the US. Isn't cleaning up the threats posed by Iranian allies in the region a prerequisite to such a bombing campaign?

Is this Gaza campaign a first step to bombing Iranian nuclear facilities?

Just a badly formed thought

As far as I'm concerned there is nothing unusual about the latest Israeli behavior. It's as it's always been and probably will be.

I think Israel has the right to defend itself against incoming rockets from Gaza. Hamas has entwined themselves into residential neighborhoods, which makes strikes difficult.

What is your idea to solve this problem? If they don't do anything, they get more. If they hit targets they get shit from everybody in the region. The Israelis gave up land for peace...and they need the land. They got nothing in return, and the Palestinians send people like Arafat to do their bargaining...and oh yeah, we give Arafat a Nobel Peace Prize. Spare me your hypocrisy on this one.

I'm against what Israel is doing. My default position.

But Joe, can you answer me this? What was Hamas thinking, lobbing shells into Israel, KNOWING that the Israelis would respond this way?

Because they can play the poor bugger me card and wave their bloody stumps in front of the camera.

I'm sick of the enabling - and that goes for sympathizers of both sides.

As long as it's Palestinians who are firing those rockets. It IS, isn't it?

A response I thought most wise: Israel has a right to defend her citizens, but no right to defend her occupation (deemed illegal under the Geneva Conventions and some 65 binding US Security Council Resolutions).

There has never been, and cannot ever be, a tranquil occupation of others' lands. The violence will not end until its root cause is ended. All colonialist expansionistic efforts in world history have failed, and the Geneva Conventions have essentially outlawed such endeavors.

One measure of the illegal behavior of Israel is that US support under these conditions actually violates US law, which require cessation of supply, and the institution of sanctions. They have violated the terms of use of US equipment, and as non-signators outside the international nuclear arms control regime (the NPT), they are an outlaw 'rogue' regime par excellance (per US law).

Israeli protestations that they 'do not target' civilians is patently false. When they wanted to kill the crippled leader of Hamas, they didn't 'surgically' take him out in public where he went daily, but in his APARTMENT BUILDING with US-supplied missiles, where those explosions most certainly would kill innocent parties.

Racial supremacist ideas lead to such disregard for humanity at large, and this is among the original sins of Zionism in concert with Talmudic Judaism.
