Poll this

If you read No Quarter, your attention has already been drawn to these CNN poll numbers, which indicate that PUMA has become a cat with claws:
In a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey completed in early June before the New York senator ended her White House bid, 60 percent of Clinton backers polled said they planned on voting for Obama. In the latest poll, that number has dropped to 54 percent.

In early June, 22 percent of Clinton supporters polled said they would not vote at all if Obama were the party's nominee, now close to a third say they will stay home.

In another sign the wounds of the heated primary race have yet to heal, 43 percent of registered Democrats polled still say they would prefer Clinton to be the party's presidential nominee.

That number is significantly higher than it was in early June, when 35 percent of Democrats polled said they preferred Clinton to lead the party's presidential ticket.

Obama won 59 percent of support from registered Democrats polled in June; now he garners 54 percent.
And then, just to prove that they still don't get it:
"These things always take time to heal," said Bill Schneider, CNN senior political analyst. "I think Clinton's supporters are waiting to see if Sen. Obama will pick her as vice president. That would certainly be very healing to them."
When will these fools understand? This is not about Hillary. It's about Obama.

The electorate -- including schlubs like yours truly, who voted for the guy in the primary -- learned too late that Barack Obama is just another crooked Chicago pol, part of the Blagojevich/Daley/Rezko "combine." And he lies and lies and lies. Incessantly. Many of us would prefer for Hillary to stay away from such a toxic running mate.

Obama's so-called "move to the center" has not garnered him any evangelical/conservative votes to make up for the PUMA deficit. Instead, he has annoyed his prog base and established a rep as the "say anything" candidate. Take, for example, his NAFTA flip flop. Most voters do not view it as an example of canny centrist positioning. They view his flip-flop as a flip-flop.

In a year in which a generic Dem beats a generic Republican by 20 points, Obama can't move more than five points ahead of McCain in most head-to-head polls. I doubt that the sitch will improve for him.

Well, the Dems could always pull a flip-flop of their own, and go for Hillary in Denver. Such a thing is possible -- unlikely, but possible. If that happened, the African American electorate would attribute the switch to racism, and there would be hell to pay. Indeed, if the Dems were to pick Clinton and McCain were to choose Colin Powell as a running mate, the black vote might well be split.

So the Democrats must head to the altar with Obama, even though the love has started to curdle.

By the way: I may be posting light this weekend. A 500 gig Maxtor external hard drive just crapped out on me. It was stuffed to the gills with data necessary to the earning of what I laughingly call a living. I extracted the actual drive from its casing in order to install it as a normal internal drive. But the thing continues to emit an ominous beep every fifteen seconds, and the computer refuses to boot up as long as the drive is attached. Most of the time, I can't even get into the BIOS screen -- and when I can, the system won't recognise the drive's existence, and won't boot Windows.)

I'm trying the "freezer trick" at this writing. This has worked for me before, but on this occasion, hope seems dim. Any other suggestions? (I'm told that data recovery costs a grand or so, and the bucks just ain't there.)

Obama's "move to the center" was more like a flip to the Right. No wonder his numbers are going down.

In another two weeks, he'll be saying we should invade Iran.

Reset your CMOS jumper on your motherboard, also try and reset your BIOS if able to enter (BIOS).

Attach bad HD to PC and boot from Windows CD, attempt HD recovery, chkdsk, etc.

Hey Joe,

You probably have another drive already in your windows machine. Disconnect that drive from the data cable and see if the BIOS recognizes the 500 gig drive.

This will tell you whether the drive is working at all. However, you won't be able to boot windows but at least you'll know that the drive is somewhat alive.

The next thing to do will be to actually look at the jumpers on both drives and set the windows drive to master and the 500 gig to slave.

"... the system won't recognise ... "

That's Canadian. You mean recognize. If you use Unix, you might be inputting unwitting garbage.

As a stubborn Mac user, (shut up) I can't help you with the computer issues, but I wish you luck.

Here's a question for you re: the Dems "head(ing) to the altar" with Obama...do you think media recognition of his corruption would give them pause to reconsider?

You do NOT need to reset your CMOS BIOS -- it won't help and you'll lose your other settings. That's definitely not your problem.

Anonymous,

Does that mean he could hook the drive up to a MAC as a second drive and save the data?

Dear Joseph,

I would suppose you know the no. 1 rule regarding your HDD problem already--Don't panic. But when such things descend upon us, I believe reminders are not out of place.

I'm confident you can sort the problem out and regain access to your data. Don't rush it. Been there, done that. I understand the feeling. Don't rush it. "You are in my prayers," as they say.

To all readers, I want to give my highest recommendation, without reservation, to a new video put up at larouchepac.com, "1932."

Aren't you ignoring the rather salient fact that John McCain is a terribly weak candidate?

Joseph,

both obama and mccain leave much to be desired. politicians lie or tell white lies, it comes with the territory regardless of the political party though some tell more than others.

Aside from your extreme rage at Obama's primary antics, what about just seeing the election in terms of who gets to decide who gets appointed to the Supreme Court? If McCain gets elected then he will continue to pack more conservatives and the rulings will get even more obnoxious like the recent Exxon ruling that overturned punitive damages so the average out of work fisherman collected less than $15,000.

By raging away at obama and his supporters, do you want McCain to win? What is your point? McCain for President? How much dirty laundry are you trying to unearth on Obama? Again, no candidate is perfect, and yes he's got some sleezy supporters like Rezko. Are you attacking Obama because you believe he is going to lose the election in advance? If so, then contact McCain's campaign and see if they'll pay you to run some ads for them.

I know you don't care about your longtime readers like myself who have started reading your blog since Nov 2004 to get a handle on the many many documented problems with the Ohio president election, but I must say your anger towards obama and his supporters is even greater than the 9/11 CD'rs. What gives Joseph?

Regarding your HD problem, the beeping sound means your system board might be failing. So, worst case, do you have an extra PC or have a friend who has a Windows machine you could hook up your harddrive to as secondary drive?

if the BIOS won't recognize the HD, then there is no way that Windows will bootup, but of course you know that.

good luck

thanks again for the great investigative work you've unearthed over the years. be sure to watch the new documentary, "uncounted", go to www.uncountedthemovie.com and pull up a list of screenings.

There's an AOL poll out that no one dares mention. It's a straw poll of course and not necessarily scientific. However The poll shows McCain at 62% and Obama at 38%. Ouch!

Check out this site, really funny, comparing Barack Obama to Chauncey Gardener from the movie, Being There:

J., re: McCain—I can't speak for Joseph, but I still have my sinking suspicion that McCain won't be the Republican nominee after all.

RE HD:

A friend of mine had an external drive that failed. We popped it out of its case and installed it as a real hard drive on an old laptop computer. To make a long story short, it was pulling big-time wattage, so we yanked it rather than risk frying the rest of the hardware. We're convinced it wasn't a platter issue but a power-control problem. It was a loss for her.

I think hers was a Western Digital external. Actually, she went thru two of them in short order.

I'm sorry -- I wish I had better news. Best of luck.

Thanks. I've also popped out the drive from the external housing. Since it won't boot even when attached to an IDE cable, I've kept it in a freezer until I can get a new 500 gig drive. If, by some miracle, the thing revives, I'll need a place to put all that stuff.

joseph,

have you tried booting up the 500Gb drive as a secondary drive from another (newer) Windows machine?

it could be that your powersupply wasn't supplying enough power to the motherboard and this would also of course affect being able to power up the harddrive.

Unless the machine was purchased in the last 2 years, there may not be enough wattage by the power supply to properly power the 500Gb harddrive.

Also, power supplies are cheap, so you could pick up a replacement power supply your current machine and see if that works.

on a political note, have you considered this?

From Jonathan Simon of Election Defense Alliance, http://www.electiondefensealliance.org/ :

"The national prediction flows from economists' belief that at least 1.4 million more homeowners will wind up in foreclosure in 2008."

Foreclosed-on voters using old addresses
could snag election

If there's Election Day disorder brewing for 2008, it might well be rooted in the nation's mortgage-foreclosure crisis. In Columbus, across Ohio and in other key presidential battlegrounds, more people losing their homes means more registered to vote from addresses where they no longer live.

Although federal law ensures that most still will be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4, Ohio voters with outdated addresses risk pre-election challenges and trips from polling place to polling place. They're also more likely to cast provisional ballots that might not be counted.

Since this was an external (USB?) drive and it does not work as attempted, I suggest you not risk further mucking around with the computer internals and put it back into its case. It appears that the external power supply and cabling are OK. Does the drive spin up, make strange noises, or what? What happens when you try chkdsk against it? Make sure you have either enough hard disk space or a new external drive ready as you might not get many chances to recover the data.
