The sort of "progressive" I can't stand

There's a type of "progressive" thought I cannot stand. If you want to get a good glimpse of it, go to this Democratic Underground page.

You will see what appears to be a fake "Wanted" poster equating George W. Bush and Nancy Pelosi. The words "It's just a piece of paper" ("It" being the Constitution) adorn Bush's image, while the words "It's off the table" ("It" being impeachment) hug the Pelosi pic.

In the first place: The Bush quote, originally published in Capitol Hill Blue, is almost certainly a fake. Every non-dunderhead spotted it as a hoax immediately. Only kids were taken in.

More importantly, if Nancy Pelosi had said "Yes, this election is all about impeaching Bush and Cheney," then the national debate would have centered on the question of whether Nancy Pelosi should be president. She would have come across as the lowest form of schemer and the Republicans would have swept the board. The Democrats would never have been in position to investigate and then to announce: "New evidence suggests..."

Some "progressives" always insist on committing suicide in the name of purity. Bloody fucking idiots!

There's going to be struggling for a while between the chickenshit Dems imagined into existence by the MSM in cooperation with Bush, and the hardcore goforthejugular weremadashell Dems that waited up to four hours in line to vote on machines they weren't even sure would count their ballots right.

Let's face it, the Dems weren't supposed to win. Rove just fucked up, probably because those last scandals in October (Foley and Haggert) threw off "his numbers" which is to say that the machines were already programmed by then for the appropriate percentages. So now we're in a whole new ballgame, and it alarms the powers that be.

Here's my prediction, FWIW. Cheney is on his way out, along with Bolton, and Rice will replace Cheney as VP. By January the stock market will collapse, as the housing bubble implosion impacts the economy. Bush will be gone by summer, and Rice by the end of the year. By 2008 we'll be under martial law, in a deep depression.

So don't sweat the small stuff. Things are going to play out the way they must, and the gods favor the righteous.

You're so much kinder to them than I am, Joseph. I don't call them "progressives," I go with "left-wing evangelicals" and I won't claim I believe they're doing what they're doing in the name of "purity." They're demanding what they're demanding, like little children who don't know how to look at the problems our elected officials in Adultworld have to solve, (like grown-ups) because they're stupid. "Stupidity" is the word I would have used if I'd written your post, not "purity." And these morons don't want it to achieve some sort of ridiculous, symbolic "purity" within the Party, either; they're lobbing their criticisms out of the worst, most childish sort of entitlement mentality, which is "based on" the most superficial, non-understanding of our reality...ever. I think even some Republicans are more intelligent and pragmatic in their approach to how to address the pile of crises our government will be facing than these fake progressives are. GO, HOME, KIDDIES. Learn to read. Come back when you can work and play well with others.

Joseph, what are the actual
grounds for stating that the "just a piece of paper" quote is verified as being a hoax?

Sure, it's unsourced, and no-one else was able to find a source for the record either. And Capitol Blue would benefit by having this quote be true. So we shouldn't quote it without an "alleged" attached.

But on the other hand, it does sound like something we'd have no problem believing is a Bush quote. He certainly acts as if the Constitution is only a piece of paper, doesn't he?

Shouldn't the appropriate attitude toward this claim simply be agnosticism, rather than namecalling?

One factor you might consider in assessing the quote, is that it has already been said, and publicized quite famously, before.

Warren commissioner John J. McCloy referred to the consitution as "just a scrap of paper" when talking about the Imprisoning of Japanese Americans during WWII. This quote later was used by my friend, Jim DiEugenio in his excellent review of the Clay Shaw prosecution, "Destiny Betrayed," to illustrate McCloy's character and how it would be consisitent with the willing coverup of the violent overthrow of democratic leadership. Of course, there is much more in his history to support that thesis.

Anyway, I questioned the quote even before I learned of its questionable origins, as soon as I heard it, simply because of the fact that it's already been done.

the election is over now so we need to face the reality that Dems are eqyally corrupted in many ways as the Repgnicons. Remember, it was dem Dems that got us into Viet Nam (after assisting in the cover up of Kennedys death by the folks that demanded that war.)
Also, dem Dems are in many ways corrupted and money hungry gluttons. The sickness is very deep in our nations leadership and body politic.
I see no problem in warning the Dems that the people are now demanding justice and a throough house cleaning..another
Watergate is in demand.
Pelosi needed to "play politics" for a while to gauge the willingness of the enemy to negotiate "out of" the terrible mess we are in.
If we the people do not make ourselves heard and felt, the monsterous maney machines will have their way with the Dems again.
Keep up the fire and butrn the dross, we have been given a miracle lets not squander it with "let the leaders lead" mantality. It is up to US now.

c'mon people wanted change and not just in iraq.
Did Pelosi actually say impeachment was off the table? if so doesn't that justify the photo and caption.
The fact is the current dem leadership is owned by the same interests(multinationals and aipac) as the repubs and most people know it. Rahm Emanuel was in the Israeli air force
We want Change not a different wolf in sheeps clothing.
