The sex scandals continue...

After first trying the deny, deny deny route, anti-gay mega-church leader Ted Haggard now admits to "indiscretions" with a gay male escort, Mike Jones. "Jones also claims Haggard used drugs with him."

In that light, you'll want to take a look at this video clip from Jesus Camp (brought to our attention by Zontar). I'd call this footage jaw-dropping, but that wording might tempt some of you to make a truly sinful pun:

Can someone explain the psychology at work here? Even though fundies thrive on fear of gays, most televangelists act in a fashion that one can only describe as flamboyant. If Liberace had studied the Bible instead of the piano, he'd have found a home on the Trinity Broadcast Network.

Meanwhile, on the heterosexual side of the aisle:
I am fascinated by the tale of Las Vegas waitress Chrissy Mazzeo, who claims that she was assaulted in a parking garage by Nevada Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Gibbons, formerly an undistinguished congressman.

Gibbons at first admitted that he was in the parking garage in question. Then he called for the release of surveillance footage that, he claimed, would exonerate him. The footage, duly released, showed neither Gibbons nor Mazzeo, despite Gibbons' previously-confessed presence at that time and place. To my eyes, a mislabeled or misidentified tape offers the simplest explanation for this puzzlement.

Mazzeo, a single mother, claims that Gibbons -- using an intermediary -- offered hush money. He also may have directed threats at both Chrissy and her child.

Many members of the Nevada media seem intent on assassinating this woman's character. They've tried their damnedest to dig up dirt; so far, they haven't found much.

To be frank, Mazzeo is quite attractive -- a factor which may cause the public to mistrust her veracity. Many people have an irrational distrust of the comely. On the other hand, one can argue that her looks add credibility to her claims. Quite a few men tend to take their stupid pills when in the presence of a lovely member of the opposite sex. God knows I have. Gibbons seems to have overdosed.

Man, I just couldn't stop laughing as I read the article. I especially like the assertion that he has been faithful to his wife.

Like Bill was? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

As for Ms. Mazzeo, I have always had an irrational TRUST of the comely. It's brought me lots of great memories, and a ton of woes.

I read that Harper's piece and cannot help but feel sorry for the poor naive people who got hoodwinked into such a sinister organization. These folks are looking for what most of us are- community, friendship, a sense of belonging, involvement in a higher purpose. Perhaps having their leader exposed as the very thing they are supposed to hate will get them thinking- "maybe this whole enterprise is a scam to get our money." Which is exactly what it is, at bottom, both directly, and indirectly through idealogically herding them toward permanent war and anti-worker policies.

Expose away! It's good for the people.

It oculdn't have happened to a nicer guy.

I, too was raised in the south and know what it's like to have Jesus shoved down your throat (pun intended) by freakish, effeminate, hair-sprayed "preachers."
What amazes me are the ones who still buy this bullshit, literally. They are the ones who will think nothing of giving money over to support closet cases like these, but will scream bloody murder if their taxes are raised. They are the ones who made the 2004 "election" close enough to steal. We will all pay for their stupidity and outright hypcrisy for generations well beyond our own lifetimes. Fuckers.

Oh and by the way, I just heard on the news that Haggard has admitted to buying meth from Mr. Jones and "receiving a massage" from him. However, he denies actually USING the or ever having gay sex. Yup. Real courage in the face of adversity, Ted. Way to go.

I say, Amen. They gave the brigands in the WH the veneer of moral legitimacy. We can only hope that when the crash comes, their leaders will be purged, their churches smashed to bits and scattered to the winds.

What is the % of gay men in the population? It seems like there could be a disproportionately large number of gay men in politics and religion. Could it be that homosexual individuals prefer those career venues for some reason?

Curiously, in the Athenian democracy Socrates, who is paradoxically known now as the greatest philosopher ever, taught “select nobles” the virtues of oligarchy and a “higher religion” (the public religion being a mere opinion) and practiced homosexuality with these same pupils. Socrates acolyte led the Tyranny of Thirty, a blood period in which all democratic institutions were suspended right after the Peloponnesian (=Iraq???) war.

After the tyranny collapsed Socrates was tried for impiety and corruption of the Athenian youth. "none wrought so many evils" to the city of Athens as Critias and Alcibiades, the two most famous pupils of Socrates. Critias "bore the palm for greed and violence,’ while Alcibiades ‘exceeded all in licentiousness and insolence" under the democracy.

Lets say you want to send a message to someone who is not getting the message. And lets say you want to make your intent REAL clear. The recipient of the message is not among the actors in the drama that comprises the message but the parallels are precise. So who is the intended recipient and what's the message?
