With the right wing in control of both the Justice Department and much of the media, I can sympathize with the unknown party who decided to use "subtle" means to make the world take note of Foley. As I've said before: If the Rovians can use covert tactics to spread lies, we can use covert tactics to spread truths.
Few believe that the Stop Sex Predators blog -- which first published the emails -- is legit. To my eyes, the whole thing was an obvious fake from the get-go. The proprietor has not answered my emails. Neither has he communicated with anyone else.
The site had but one purpose: To publicize the original Foleygate emails and (perhaps) other material. That's why the blog went up shortly after both CREW and John Avarosis received the evidence.
At this point, I should reiterate that the emails exist in two different versions; one is a retyping of the other. No-one has yet explained this oddity. Avarosis published the same version that Stop Sex Predators received. In fact, the angle of the scan is the same in both cases -- a telling detail. Presumably, someone sent the same jpg image to both JA and SSP.
I had a brief, but interesting, exchange of emails with Avarosis. What I am about to reveal is not an easy admission, since I acted impetuously and foolishly...
(To read the rest, click "Permalink" below)
I flat-out accused John Avarosis of being part of a two-man team behind the Stop Sex Predators site. He persuasively denied the claim, and has repeated his denial on his blog. Apparently, Sean Hannity has been making a similar accusation.
If Hannity's thinking paralleled mine -- well, that's no source of pride, since my motives differ from those of the right-wingers. Frankly, I admire the way Mark Foley was exposed. In my email to Avarosis, I volunteered to make the Stop Sex Predators site a little more detailed, a little less flagrantly phonus-balonus.
We must take John Avarosis at his word when he denies any foreknowledge of this scandal. But we should note that in 2004, Avarosis wrote the following:
"...One more thing, semi-closeted Congressman Mark Foley's (R-FL) former chief of staff Kirk Fordham says in the article that he never spoke with me about his former boss' being gay. That's an outright lie. I've been friends with Kirk for going on ten years now, and he's confirmed Foley's sexual orientation numerous times to me and to many many others..."(Emphasis added.) Just today, AP has reported:
Kirk Fordham, the longtime top adviser to Mark Foley who resigned today as chief of staff to NRCC chief Tom Reynolds, has just told the Associated Press that he told Speaker Dennis Hastert's office about Foley's conduct two years ago and asked the leadership "to intervene" in Foley's case -- a year before GOP House leaders have claimed they heard about it. If true, this revelation blows apart the official House leadership line that they were first alerted to the problem when they learned of the "overly friendly" emails. What's more, Fordham also says he'll disclose to the FBI and House ethics committee "any and all meetings and phone calls" regarding Foley's behavior that he had with senior leadership staffers. Here is how ABC's Brian Ross describes his original source for the emails:
Mr. Ross declined to identify any of the sources by name. He described the first tipster as a "Capitol Hill source" -- though not an aide or congressional official -- who was "aware of the pages' complaints" and "concerned about kids and pedophiles." This person, Mr. Ross said, is "involved in public-policy issues" but isn't affiliated with either political party.I'm not sure if these words apply to Fordham. Even so, I would have to say that Fordham must now be the leading candidate for those trying to answer this key question: "Who gave the goods on Foley to SSP, AmericaBLOG , CREW and ABC?"
Could Fordham himself be the creator of the Stop Sex Predators site? Possibly.
But I believe that honor belongs the other member of the "two man team" mentioned in my rash email to Avarosis: Mike Rogers of BlogActive. Mike Rogers is friendly with John Avarosis, who is friendly with Fordham. It is thus fair to suspect that Rogers and Fordham know each other.
Although I accused Avarosis of being "in it" with Rogers, Avarosis has made no reference to his friend, either in private or on his site. Avarosis insists that he does not know who was behind SSP.
If we posit that Rogers acquired the emails this summer, how would he have proceeded?
He would have had every motive to keep a low profile. Last January, Rogers came in for a great deal of criticism after he published a threat to "out" a senator -- a threat worded in such a way as to expose Rogers to the charge of being a blackmailer. Many people on both the left and the right feel uncomfortable with Rogers' penchant for "outing" gay Republicans.
A man with so controversial a history would probably want to expose Foley while keeping his own name out of the limelight.
But working in the shadows can be unsatisfying. Perhaps that's why Rogers posted a comment to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee website in which he wrote these words, vis-a-vis Foleygate:
"I am glad my work on this is finally coming to fruition."
I wrote an email to the Stop Sex Predators blogger, addressing him as Mike Rogers. No response.
In short and in sum: I think Mike Rogers is the man behind Stop Sex Predators. If that suspicion proves accurate, then he has -- in my view -- behaved honorably in his attempts to expose Foley. If Rogers had published the emails on his own site, he would have saddled the enterprise with his own personal baggage. The far-rightists, who just love to change the subject, would have seized the opportunity to switch the focus from Foley to Rogers.
The ones who have behaved in a truly shabby fashion (aside from Foley and the House Republican leadership) are the FBI investigators who received copies of the "over-friendly" emails from CREW back in July. If anyone at the Bureau had bothered to call up a few pages -- had done some actual investigating -- this whole scandal would have been resolved by now, and some other Republican would be running (and probably winning) in Florida.
The right now wants to pretend that Foley's pecadillos were held back by Democratic activists until close to the election. Bullshit.
Both law enforcement and the media possessed the initial material months ago. Someone tried to spread the word back then. Whoever that someone might have been -- Rogers or someone else -- the obvious goal was to get the wheels of justice turning at that time.
If the FBI guys had done their damned jobs...
As a fellow named Mulder once said: "That's why they put the I in FBI."

most excellent, joe!! bravo!!
you've drawn my same conclusions about all this. and the truth is likely to come out in time. but as i believe josh mentioned earlier today, the accusations of the right on this count amount to nothing, because nothing alters what foley did and how all the repug officials covered that up. ultimately, kudos to whomever we can 'accuse' of outing this crime! and all the evidence shows the timing is no one's fault but their own.
again, good on ya, joe!
Here's what I've concluded after gazing into the abyss for a few days....
The torture factories are for the edification of those who both rule and have an insatiable urge to feed their sick fantasies by turning them into realities.
When the Abu Ghraib scandal broke, I couldn't answer one question that kept arising. Why were they employing useless techniques for interrogation? I saw a panel of interrogators on one of the cable news outlets. They all agreed that these humiliation techniques were entirely counter productive if your goal was to get reliable information or subdue a hostile population.
Then it occurred to me that the techniques pictured and rumored from unseen pictures conformed to Bondage Discipline Sado Masochism (BDSM) rituals which are fairly accessible on the web of from one of your more creative friends. There is a big difference; however, the BDSM community has specific rules against involuntary humiliation or punishment. This community also provides participants with a "safe word" what will stop the entire show. Any violation of this core rule results in expulsion from whatever circle you're in. In other words, people who do this to unwilling participants and verboten.
Then it occurred to me, 20 somethings don't take sex pictures of older men or men without any particular appeal doing weird things to each other. They take pictures of themselves or their partners and share them, carry them around, turn them into desktops, etc.
THEY WERE NOT TAKING THE PICTURES FOR THEMSELVES.
WHO WERE THEY TAKING THEM FOR?
The answer is obvious, the White House cult of real-life torture.
They're doing this because they like to. The more they do the more that they want to do it. They do it because they can and they can do it on a grand scale. The sole purpose of the torture network is for the sick edification of those few who rule that form the torture cult.
I'm happy to give this theory up if someone can give me a persuasive argument that this torture and al the risk it carries does one single thing to extract real, useful, reliable information based on past experience.
One note, someone at Gitmo revealed that one of the "interrogations" was personally supervised by Rumsfeld. This was in the Post etc. and is a matter of record.
Who else is ordering up torture a go go with pictures at 11:00? That's not hard to guess.
The perpetuation of this sick, fetishistic, abject cruelty occurs because so many of those in government service have been reeled into the day to day aspects. If the true perpetrators go down and the real story is told, that will be it for them too!
It's a small world after all and a sick one too!
Cannonfire, you out did yourself here. Kudos Dude. The FBI did nothing because Foley is not a terrarist. You and I happen to hold that title and honor now as plain ole American citizens. The elite can torture, molest and skip tax paying. We the little people, get molested, pay all the taxes, and get tortured. I think Foley is a terrarist. He terrarized young male pages for a long time. I think it is time to call Bush's spades spades and speak words of truth. Republicans are rotten throughout. End of story and yes, thanks to whomever got the willies AND outed this pervert.
Anon 2:02: I am RIGHT there with you on the real motivations for the horrific behavior of these sick bastards. I've never even believed that their alleged perversion of rumored radical "religious" practices play that great a role in what pushes them to do...what they do, which is brutalize, humiliate and murder people, either literally or socially.
Longtime Republican was source of e-mails
Joseph, I know you have been focusing on the origins of the scandal, but there is something else going on so dreadful, so obvious a signal of the end of a pretense of a free press that I wanted to alert you and your readers to it. It is being disclosed in a number of threads at DemocraticUnderground and a few liberal blogs, but it is so depressing I can't even get myself to respond on those threads. It is apprently how Rove has decided to fix the problem.
Fox News is running stories in which they identify Foley as a Democrat and say the Democrats are scrambling to preserve Foley's seat. Yes, you heard me correctly. Fox News believes its listeners are so fucking dumb and brainwashable that they just outright lie and say Foley is a Democrat. The DUers have screen shots to prove it. The first time it happened, DUers thought it was a dumb mistake, but it has happened three times, each more aggressively. I don't have the sound track to the screen shot address I am posting below, but it appears the lying bastards actually had a panel discussion about this "Democrat Party" problem. Now it's not Hastert who did the cover up, but Sen. Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Bill Clinton.
This, Joe, is the end of objective reality as we have known it.

HamdenRice from DU
HamdenRice, this problem is indeed being discussed all over, including @ Glenn Greenwald comments and HuffPo, but has there actually been panel discussions describing this as a problem for Dems? I find that hard to believe, tho I readily believe they are putting the "D" by Foley's name to subliminally suggest to their cluless audience that the "R's" are still the party of "Family Values."
Well this should tell you that this all will end with Foley. Forget about Gannon, forget about the Franklin Credit Scandal under Bush 41. Forget about the death of Craig Spence, forget about Barney Frank's roommate running a pedo brothel out of his 3rd story mansion. Not to mention all those who've still to be outed and are probably much, much worse than Foley. This is a red-herring, though a worthy one, while Bushco pushes through their nazi agenda stripping us of making comments like this. The way the bill can be interpreted, we can all be emeney combantants simply for disagreeing or pointing out lies of the govt. and media.
It is good to hear that "the Hill" has broken the story that the source for the emails was a GOP page/aide. With the chutzpah of Fox the past few days, I wouldn't be surprised if they ignore the most read paper on the Hill. ISn't there laws about what FOx is doing? If not, that is bizarre.
