By the way, Scholastic partially backed down, but only partially -- they still recommend using the miniseries as a "teaching aid." I suppose even dog manure can be a teaching aid -- it teaches you to watch where you are going.
We should ask Scholastic to dissociate themselves entirely from this effort. Does anyone know how to contact J.K. Rowling? I doubt that she would appreciate the fact that her American publishers aligned themselves with those who have tried to paint Harry Potter as demonic...
The director of the film, David Cunningham, has interesting ties. While I am loathe to judge a son by his father, we should note that Cunnigham's father Loren Cunningham was in a far-right Christian cult called Youth With a Mission, and also appears to be allied with (or at least sympathetic to) the anti-democratic Christian Reconstructionist movement. (See here.)
Does David the director think like his dad? His only other major credit appears to be a Christian piece -- not a bad thing, in and of itself, but that background does not quell fears that he holds some personal sympathy for Reconstructionism.
From Think Progress:
Over 50,000 ThinkProgress readers have written ABC in the last 48 hours about "The Path to 9/11." We're going to keep the pressure on ABC, but we're also broadening our focus today to the Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC.
Disney's Chairman of the Board is former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell (D-ME). Senator Mitchell has a long and distinguished career both inside and outside government and he knows how important it is to accurately represent historical events.
We need to remind him that 9/11 was a national tragedy, and that politicizing and flagrantly misrepresenting the facts about 9/11 is wrong.

You did it! I just heard that Scholastic backed out. Thank you Joseph. I'm putting the mickey logos on my site now, even though they may erase the blog again. We'll keep coming back.

Hey Cannonfire, you are making a difference in America. Do you realize that? AND it is a good difference, an honest difference and a very appreciated difference. THANK YOU for your well done research.
Here's a list of ABC advertisers, with hot links:
http://birdoblog.birdobot.com/disney_propaganda
These are the true "shareholders" of ABC. Let 'em know their products are done for.
chs at fdl informs us that a little disney birdy has told 'daily variety' - THE trade in h'wood - that abc may yank the show altogether. chs thinks this may be a feeler/balloon, and suggests we email iger.
robert.a.iger@disney.com
and call disney at 1-818-560-1000 or 1-818-460-7477; call ABC at 1-212-456-7777 or 1-818-560-1000.
the 7477 number is the direct customer comment line. be prepared for a busy signal, but keep trying.
meanwhile, it has also occurred to me that these craven creepos have really shoved themselves into a corner with this one. keith AND scarborough led with this story last night, and it's generating so much stink, hardly anyone will view the show with any amount of gullibility if it does air, and if anyone watches it.
i mean, who among us would knowingly watch propaganda?? and as i pointed out to iger in my email, few folks will actually spend money on propaganda, so don't expect great dvd sales.
the thing is, the whole scheme is likely to backfire, whichever way it goes! in fact, it might even be in some twisted way to our advantage for the crap to actually air, because if it doesn't, then the whole loony fringe will scream 'censorship' and draw the victim card.
in contrast, if it does air, folks will (a) ignore it, (b) watch it with jaundiced eyes and get royally ticked at the overt twisting of the truth, or (c) watch it and love it.
given the polls as they are, i suspect that my listing above is in something like the order of likelihhood and numbers. plus, most of those who ignore it are likely already pretty ticked. so the upshot is a lot of ticked folks.
add to that the likelihod that clinton and others abused by this mangling of such an important historical event will sue their pants off. further bad publicity. not to mention how fun the discovery process would be.
and now that even the star, harvey keitel, has come out acknowledging that he was not comfortable with the distortions, the studio is going to have a real hard time keeping their defenses credible.
gosh, it seems almost win-win from that angle. though i don't mean this to suggest we should relax the heat. we need it more now than ever.
so, email iger. i hear he's a nice guy.
I plan on contacting Disney this weekend, if Disney/ABC is spewing this propaganda/spin to brainwash and deceive the masses, I will NEVER again go to any Disney theme park or resort or watch any Disney movies or prime time shows ever again, and I will make that very clear to them!
I'm glad scholastic backed out of this deal, as I do several thousand dollars of business with Scholastic and they would have lost me if they backing this attempted brainwashing project.
