Rebuilding Lebanon

Looks like the Bush administration wants to rebuild Lebanon at American taxpayer expense, in order to prevent Hezbollah from doing so at Iranian taxpayer expense. At first glance, this arrangement seems fair: You broke it, you pay for it.

But think back to the millions upon millions -- no, billions -- of dollars lost or misallocated during the reconstruction of Iraq. Think of the obscene profits made after Katrina. Perhaps the American citizenry can get a better deal if we simply offer to transfer funds directly from the U.S. Treasury to Haliburton?

Whoa, Joe. We're just going to borrow the cash from the Chinese. The taxpayers are safe.

Hezbollah is the one who should transfer the funds directly to Halliburton.

The organization would instantly become a "partner for peace", Bush would get a photo op and American politicians have one less terrorist to worry about.
