The Maoists are coming! AIEEE!!

A couple of posts down, I talked about the case of the Dartmouth student who received federal attention because he requested a copy of Chairman Mao's little red book via interlibrary loan. A reader told me that the report had yet to be substantiated. Well, now it has been. As I suspected might be the case, the poor guy was taking a class in totalitarianism, and had been directed by his professor to seek out primary sources.

What the hell was on the minds of those Homeland Security types? Do they really think that anyone in this country who takes Mao's ravings seriously could pose an actual threat?

The only American Maoists I ever met were assholes allied to the Revolutionary Communist Party, which was a cult of personality run by a ludicrous figure named Bob Avakian. I ran into a couple of those guys back in my college days -- more years ago than I will here divulge. Everyone on campus thought they were hilarious. Believe me, if those clueless turkeys are the enemy, we haven't got a thing to worry about.

I know that right-wing nutjobs constantly try to connect the jihadist movement with communism. That's because right-wing nutjobs are incapable of learning the basic facts of history. One of those facts is this: The Salafist movement (Al Qaeda is an outgrowth of Salafism) is closely allied to the Muslim Brotherhood, which had stood against Nasserism, which was the last major Arab political movement to display any sympathy for any variety of socialism. There was a strong socialist movement in Iran in the 1970s, but it was wiped out by Khomeini.

(Incidentally, there are some aficionados of parapolitics who argue that the CIA, having noted the Shah's instability, helped to establish Khomeini as an alternative, beause a religious leader was considered preferable to anyone on the left. I don't know if that allegation is true, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were.)

Forgive my discursiveness. The point is, we now know that the Pentagon is spying on anti-War protestors. That means you and me. We know that "Uncle" can now track your movements if you carry a cel phone. No warrant necessary.

Meanwhile, our prez is good friends with Saudi royalty, while Saudi citizens (and those who merely claim to be such) are pouring into this nation, legally and illegally. The administration refuses to beef up security at our ports, and the Bushfolk want to allow sharp implements back on airplanes.

Obviously, this administration does not consider jihadists to be the enemy. After all, a new terror incident would rescue W's poll numbers.

No, the real enemy is anyone who opposes King George.

"discursiveness"? damn, I had to look that up! You're educating us in more than just the labyrinth ways of global politics Joseph :-) Keep up the good work!

Not only are they spying on anti-war activists, they've infiltrated the vegans (see yesterday's NYT). Apparently, bean curd and lentils now pose a national security risk.

And people wonder why "they" couldn't stop 9/11. What do we expect, when police work attracts right-wing nut cases and blinkered authoritarians?

My understanding is that when Khomeini was in Paris, I think exiled by the Shah, he was on CIA retainer.

And, of course, the use of Islamic extremists, with the original Muslim Brotherhood the first of many, was an old British empire trick in the ME, which we took over as we replaced the Brits in Iran and other places.

Here is a site that supports a muslim (Omar Alghabra) running for MPP in Ontario, Canada:

Note: They are Communist. How odd.

You people need to stop connecting the dots with crayon.

Good god, I can't believe that idiots like Mr. Anonymous here bother to read this blog. Responding to his foolishness really isn't worth my time. Even so...

First, the site mentioned above may be run by Marxists, but the story they reprinted does not identify Alghabra as a Communist. This background site gives quite a different picture...

https://www.liberal.ca/bio_e.aspx?id=35049&type=can

He is described as an entrepreneur with a solid business background, active in Canada's version of Junior Achievement. (Ah yes -- JA...that notorious hotbed of Leninist subversion...) I've seen no indication that he is in any way outside the Canadian mainstream.

He was, however, the victim of a smear campaign, which was no doubt engineered by people who think like Mr Anonymous...

Apparently, the same forces which tried to sully his name are using THIS blog to continue that scurrilous effort.

I think it says something about the desperate state of today's rightists that they feel obligated to smear someone just because he is of Arab descent, even if their target has situated himself well within the middle of the Canadian road.

Shortly after 9/11, Bush correctly took pains to make sure that America's anger was not directed at all Muslims. That attitude has changed. Now, anti-Islam fever is the only thing Bush's supporters have left.

Even if you ARE able to point the example of an Arab Leninist somewhere in this world (and such creatures no doubt do exist) -- so what? How does the example of one guy, or of an obscure group, suddenly deep-six my larger point about Salafism, the Muslim Brotherhood, and their historical role in the anti-Nasser movement?

By your logic, I could point to George Lincoln Rockwell and say that all white guys are Nazis.

You are the one still playing with crayons, kid. And the only crayon in your package is red.

What neeeds to be done is to start a read a commie book day and flood the libraries with requests for all kinds of books that might be considered subversive. If somebody could get the DHS book list - what fun!
