Much has occurred on the Randy "Duke" Cunningham front. Not only did this Republican congressman sell a house at a wildly inflated price to a defense contractor who benefited from Duke's votes -- turns out this shabby pol has done the same sort of deal repeatedly. Right now, the best place to go for info is Talking Points Memo, this San Diego Union-Tribune account and this Washington Post story.
Duke, it turns out, has made a strange bedfellow (and a very soiled bed it is!) of one Thomas Kontogiannis, a shady Long Island real estate developer with a history of bribing schemes.
This story is even more important than many may believe, for at least three reasons:
1. Impeachment won't happen unless at least one house of Congress changes ownership. Every seat counts.
2. We have good reason to believe that other Republicans are guilty of similar shennanigans.
3. This Kontogiannis fellow has tossed around some very long green, and has done so in a way that sets off my (far from infallible) Spidey sense. Don't be too surprised if he turns out to be something more than just another corrupt businessman.
