Danny Schechter, who operates the news site MediaChannel.org, and who has been doing some investigating into the wired-Bush rumors himself, said the Bush campaign has been worried of late about others picking up their radio frequencies -- notably during the Republican Convention on the day of Bush's appearance. "They had a frequency specialist stop me and ask about the frequency of my camera," Schechter said. "The Democrats weren't doing that at their convention."Lindorff also learned that the candidates did not wear body microphones, relying entirely on podium mics. Even so, the Bush forces may not have known beforehand what the technical arrangements in the hall would be. I have suggested that Bush wore the receiver strapped to his back to avoid discovery by a technician "wiring" him with a standard chest microphone.
A few correspondents have said, in effect: "Okay, I believe you -- but so what? Is this earpiece business really so important? We've always known that W isn't the brightest bulb on the tree." The post directly beneath this one suggests one reason why this issue may be of great significance.

If it was an orthopedic brace, it sure didn't help George's posture much. See bottom photos on: http://isbushwired.com/2004/10/voice-in-bushs-ear.html
Promptergate! Fascinating!
Not only is being wired completely lame, it's also cheating. According to the official debate rules, neither candidate is supposed to have outside help during the debate:

I have two crushed vertebrae in my upper back and wear that exact same brace. It straightens your back up quite a bit and it's hard to slump while wearing it. Its something that's for a very specific type of injury or problem.. definitely _not_ something a typical person with aging back problems is going to wear. It also by no means produces any kind of bulge even remotely like that under clothing. Sorry, but I can confidently say it's no back brace.
I found another instance of bush issueing an odd "let me finish" when no one seemed to be interrupting him while watching Fahrenheit 9/11, strangely enough.
He did the same exact "let me finish" eruption during his infamous "bring them on" response. As far as I can tell, no one was interrupting him. It's possible it was a reporter off mic, but it just looks weird if you watch it.
I haven't found a video online, but I did find this transcript. (emphasis added)
"THE PRESIDENT: Well, first of all, we'll put together a force structure who meets the threats on the ground. And we've got a lot of forces there, ourselves. And as I said yesterday, anybody who wants to harm American troops will be found and brought to justice. There are some who feel like that if they attack us that we may decide to leave prematurely. They don't understand what they're talking about, if that's the case.
Let me finish. There are some who feel like -- that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, bring them on."
