A simple question

If we managed to defeat Nazi Germany without violating the Geneva conventions...

if we managed to defeat imperial Japan without violating the Geneva conventions...

if we managed to prevail in the cold war without violating the Geneva conventions...

...then why must we violate the Geneva conventions to "win" in Afghanistan and Iraq?

Of course, many will point out that prisoner abuse also occurred in Vietnam. Vietnam was the fight we didn't win, because our conduct of the war sickened the home front, united the enemy, and alienated an ostensibly allied population.
