The Soviet space program did not bankrupt the system.
What caused the downfall of the Soviet Union was political corruption, a cynical public that had lost faith with the leadership, an inability to dislodge itself from an unworkable ideology, unsustainable defense spending, and, most of all, getting bogged down in a hopeless war in Afghanistan.

It seems most republican go to school where American History classes must either be taught by very bad teachers or where American History classes are nonexistent. Any one with tea party attached to their name has that issue. You can't even point them to original documents to correct their mistakes either. I guess even John Adams, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson themselves are spurious liberal sources these days.
The Sputnik moment was the USA's response to losing the initial space race. Palin just nuts.
You know what else the USSR and the current USA have in common? An oligarchy of thieves is angling for the downfall of the entire nation so they can devour absolutely everything at fire-sale prices, all in the name of free-market absolutism.

And Joe's definitely right about the parallels between the old USSR and the US. I think the only thing that can possibly save us at this point would be the miraculous appearance of a chili recipe.

I think Joseph is spot on between the USSR connections and us now. The right wing has spent decades trying to confuse communism with fascism so they can keep on pushing fascism with no one noticing.
