Stop it

Note to readers who enjoy offering comments: Nearly all of you have taken to heart the rule about not insulting the proprietor of this blog. However, many recent comments have been marred by readers insulting each other -- harshly and needlessly. In the past, I've tolerated these displays of opprobrium. I will continue to do so to a degree. That degree is smaller now than was previously the case. Some waspish comments have been deleted. If you can't keep it at least somewhat civil, don't be surprised if your words go unpublished.

I, on the other hand, will continue to be my usual asshole self. As Kenneth Mars says in The Producers: "You are za audience! I am za author! I OUTRANK you!"

Whenever a blog author posts one of these comments, about 50% of your entire community thinks you are singling them out.

And the people it was directed at think he must be talking about someone else.

What Allessandro said.

Most of the commenters around here with variable views all bring something interesting to the Party, agreeing to disagree, yada yada. The way I see it, as long as we're all going to Hell in a hand basket and drop in here with our own views on who-what-where-when and why and to compare notes, it's really good to hear the civility rule will be ratcheted up a notch.

Now that made me spontaneously laugh because it is true and explains my whole life to me.
