Well, it's not yet official, but it is nearly so: Obama is ready to toss out the public option, or so says both AP and Reuters. With that nasty old "socialism" out of the picture, Orrin Hatch of Utah appears ready to go back to the bargaining table.
So that's it. Millions must suffer in order to appease a self-righteous coot from a state founded by, and filled with, religious nuts. Also among the appeased: Senator Shelby of Alabama and Democratic turncoat Kent Conrad of North Dakota.
Once again, we see the basic constitutional problem. Our system gives disproportionate weight to the Senators from states with small populations. North Dakota has a mere 640,000 residents -- in California terms, that's a neighborhood.

You are so right... We do see the basic Constitutional problem... The government has no Constitutional authority to do what it's doing.
If you believe it does, kindly enlighten me by quoting that portion of the document where it says so.
France has the same problem (senate). But the President has the right to dissolve the assembly/government (and it has happened) which triggers new elections. In a case like the current one in France, the goverment had already fallen because there is an incompatibility between the presidents popular mandate (reform) and the impossibility to drive it through (desired or not desired). So the people must go back to voting booth. Other systems in Europe (most of them parliamentary) have similar dispositions triggering anticipated elections. What I understand it's not possible in the US and you have to wait until midterm. Anyway I think that no matter what, Obama shot himself in the foot and will be a one term president. The real question is : what comes after ?
Bob, why do right-wingers like you come to a site like this? You're in the wrong place.
You completely misunderstand what I had to say. Can you quote the portion of my post in which I claim that the government has "no Constitutional authority" to do what it is doing?
You cannot offer such a quote because I wrote no such thing.
What I was saying, here and in previous posts, was that the Constitution itself is flawed. The American system gives far too much weight to small states and rural populations. We can rectify the situation by having a Constitutional convention and rewriting the document to get rid of the Senate and the electoral college.
However, I fear to take that step. The Founders were products of the Enlightenment -- they were, in a broad sense, Illuminati. Times are different, the culture is different and people are different. I want the Constitution re-written, but not by Obscurati.
Joseph, your last post in response to Bob makes a lot of sense. I am myself very interested in the differences between the French and the US Constitutions and their evolution (?) over time since their original authors come from the same ideological pool (Montesquieu, Locke, Jefferson etc...).
I have come to the conclusion that the current state of biblical exegesis of a document by jurists and the following worshiping is a dead end. A new modern US Constitution can only be the product of either a second revolution or a total collapse of the current system.
Be careful what you wish for, my lupine friend. After a crash of the current system, what will follow? Will the ideological heirs of Voltaire march to the forefront? Or will we see the sons of Adolf seize their chance?
Joe
I don't wish it, I have the same fears. Specially since the prospect of a second "Voltairian" revolution seems very remote...and we have a shortage of Lafayettes, even we actually are reconstructing a full size copy of the original "Hermione"...
It was never meant to become law. That's why the big money said it had to be Obama, not Hillary.

Not is correct-- this situation simply gives Little O cover to hide behind; he was never for national insurance, only his lips said so,not his actions. Once again, the insurance companies and banks (almost indistinguishable institutions) will win so they can continue sucking the blood out of the American economy and the deluded tax payers who think is more American to pay Big Insurance than it is to pay taxes.

Not everyone in Utah are religious nuts. Some of us are just plain old nuts!
