A few updates...

I hate fiddling with the Template of this blog. But the blogroll was horribly outdated, as were some of the other links. When I get the chance, I'm going to give this blog a full make-over -- but for now, this will do.

You think I should keep the fire-infused illustration up at the top? The imagery was inspired by Sergei Bondarchuk's films set in the Napoleonic era, War and Peace and Waterloo. I was always a big fan of those.

(Here's a particularly obscure trivia question which I expect no-one to get: Which performer in Waterloo has also appeared on the Food Network?)

Keep the illo - it's a part of your "brand."

p.s. If I *had* to guess, I'd say Veronica De Laurentiis...

...but as I don't have to, I'm going to go with the obvious joke answer: Orson Welles. :D

Jeez, you got it, Sergei! (No, not Orson.)

Veronica is the mother of Giada, and she still looks very lovely.

In the movie, she is engaged to the Duke of Wellington's handsome young aide. Early on, her mother tells the Duke to keep the aide safe: "Do not make my daughter a widow before she is a bride." If you've ever seen a movie before in your entire life, you know right then and there that the poor fellow is doomed.

I wouldn't mind seeing something other than the fire as the header to your website. Never base your visuals on Russian artists. Except Kandinsky.

Oh joy! I don't know what you did, but I can finally read all of the diaries without having them covered by ads on the right-hand side. Thank you. Now if I could just convince you not to use this google blog that would be great. This whole signing in with an identity nonsense is just too cumbersome.

You don't have to sign in. You can post as Anonymous, but I would appreciate it if folks would add a signature of some kind in the body of the message.

The right-column "bleed over" effect crops up from time to time. It never happens on Firefox, and I don't THINK it happens on IE. It seems to be mostly a Safari thing, and it may also have to do with the text size that you have chosen.

It also has to do with the text itself and how it interacts with the images. A very long word (or URL) and a picture sharing the same line will cause the formatting to go haywire.

The problem will cycle out after a while as old posts are replaced by new ones.

I use Safari and I've never had the bleed-over, thank goodness!

I like the fire at the top. It looks great.

I love the header!

But, the header is not the reason I come to this blog!!!

I like the fire, tho I kept expecting to hear the 1812 Overture.

The ad bleed-over thing does happen with IE. It seems to have something to do with lower resolutions - the lower the resolution, the more pronounced. I've seen similar things on other blogs, like images that had the right side cropped - not by ads, just the white margin. My experience with Firefox is the same - no problems.

I visit here daily using Safari and have never seen any bleed-over whatsoever.

And I like the header as well. Of course, if you're going to go with a new template design, trying to find one that will work with your header may take an unnecessary amount of your time. In the end, it might be better to just forgo it.

Joe -

Full disclosure: Despite being a film buff and hopefully future graduate of the Cordon Bleu School (just like Gianna, oddly enough), I haven't seen Waterloo, nor do I watch the Food Network. I just looked on imdb and the FN site and picked the most likely answer. :)

Hmm, maybe I'll write a movie script where the aide in question walks out the door muttering something to the effect of: "Jeez, why don't you just kill me now and get it over with?" :D

p.s. Do I get a "no-prize"? ;)
