That Hoover moment

The estimable Nibbles Magee came in for some criticism when she wrote (some posts down) of Obama: "...Carter? Nope. He's Hoover."

To understand the point, check out this Krugman column. The whole article is very valuable, but right now, I want to draw your attention to the first chart. Most people forget that, although the stock market crashed in 1929, the really desperate times hit in 1932.

Right now, we may be re-living '29. If and when we relive '32, the president will be Hoover II.

I think this gives Obama too much credit. Is Obama really a Carter, or Hoover, or anyone we've seen before? I still think he's an empty suit who got very lucky this year with the economic meltdown. Maybe his advisers will do a good job for him while in office and things will work out great but to me he's just another George W. Bush: someone who is inexperienced and is more concerned about his legacy than doing what is best for the country.

Not apropos of this particular item, but:

who do we think will receive presidential pardons from either Bush or Obama?

Rosen and Weissman?
Pollard?
Abramoff?
Rezko?

The point I was trying to make, which I may not have made clear enough for some readers, is that this country has so many things horribly wrong with so many parts of its social structures that everything is on (and really, going over) the brink.

The story about the dead couple I linked to (emblematic of what will be worst for the U.S. about the end of the Bush-Reagan-Bush wars—the social cost of having destroyed the mental health of most of the military) was supposed to remind people how damaged the fundamentals are now.

And the post-war catastrophes are only one slice of the rancid Failed Society pie. I don't see how a real (even a great) president could make a dent in the chaos, let alone a corrupt, clueless plant like Obama.

So, I'm sorry I didn't spell it out more clearly for those of you who like to pretend you need things spoon-fed to you in microscopic portions for the conclusions to be comprehensible. I guess I should have just written, "WE'RE FUCKED," and left it at that.

Monsieur Mcgee, I concur with the conclusion "We're f123ed!!" but details don't hurt. They don't hurt at all. Some may just have a problem drawing the intended conclusion. Not your fault.
