I wonder who this is?

The caller -- who claims to know Obama personally -- should be identifiable, given the clues. At any rate, I find his perspective interesting.

You didn't say what sort of program you replayed, there's no link (unless it's on the video past the beginning). I stopped 'watching' and listening after I heard the 'caller' say "bullshit". How come it wasn't bleeped unless it's subscription radio? Fuck.

Moments before, I watched Obama's Berlin address for the first time (via TPM's YouTube, via the poorman's blog, where it's compared to the Hitler rallies via a link to some blog called atlasshrugged or something).

Obama's address was something you'd want to give, or I'd want to give, no? You can't say this time it was empty of substance. It sounded like classical oratory and formal rhetoric, and definitely not the epideictic sort. While he made no argument as such, he delivered an impressive, informative lecture; its best feature being its listing and clarification of serious issues. His recursive method was first-rate.

Nothing like it, on such a scale, has been done since that live performance of "All You Need Is Love" - remember that?

Abbey again, and I listened all the way through. He also said 'fuck'. The caller's a jagoff and probably an asshole. A businessman pastor, and I know what they're like. I guess it's okay when he says Obama literally stabs you in the back since no one knows the difference anymore between literal, virtual, or anything in between. And if you're stupid, like him, you think he's smart the way he interrupts his own incoherent statements and says Obama lives in Hyde Park, it's where, University of Chicago, University of Chicago has more Nobel Peace Prize winners blah blah.

Nobel Peace Prize winners. Like Benny Goodman and Studs Turkel. It reminded me of the time the workers at the Allegheny Court House went out on strike, and a judge in the Domestic Relations Division was interviewed on TV and asked to describe some of the problems, and he says "Well, for one thing, the non-support checks can't go out".

Abbey, you followed all the rules, unlike most other Obi supporters. And you used the word "epideitic" in a sentence, which is tres cool. But you may want to find another blog. The guy is a crook and one of the more outrageous liars in the history of politics.

"I stopped 'watching' and listening after I heard the 'caller' say "bullshit". How come it wasn't bleeped unless it's subscription radio? Fuck.... ...He also said 'fuck'. The caller's a jagoff and probably an asshole" um, you're argument against him and his use of profane language might seem stronger if you cleaned up your language.

...And Abby, "Jagoff??" No one takes anyone seriously when they don't have the nerve to say Jackoff, it's like saying oh fudge!
========

and as for the speech I wish i gave (hardly) ---you negelected to say that the 200,000 people in the crowd were actually there to see their favorite reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn-- but what of it??

"I come to Berlin, as many of my country men have come before, although tonight I come to you not as a candidate for president but as a citizen."

?? how is that so? is he not a Senator when he is on the road? Was that not a speech to make him look presidential? and then worse of all, by saying "although" what he is saying is that unlike JFK, and Ronnie, he is not a candidate right now. So what is correct about that opening? Was JFK's Ich Bin Ein Berliner speech made when he was running against Nixon, or was it in the last 6 months of 36? Was Reagan running against Jimmy Carter when he said "Mr. Gorbachev Tear Down These Walls?" no, these were not candidates for president. The only candidate who spoke in Berlin (on this scale) is BHO.

Then the next thing to come out of his mouth is the race card:
"I know that I don't look like the Americans who have previously spoken in this great square." Nice...

Then he talks about his daddy's yearning for a better life and that's why he applied to schools in the States (um, if we was yearning for a better life wouldn't he have stayed stateside any way possible? Why would he have taken off so quickly then? Sounds like a yearning for better education, but not much more...

Then he gets into the 21st century and this "New World." Great. Even tosses a nuclear bomb going off in Paris as an added thread. Sweet.

And then he goes on about how USA sacrifices greatly for "Freedom around the globe." Sounds like Bush.

...and the walls have come down in the Balkans??? Have you asked any Serbians about this?? Have you looked at what NATO did to Sarajevo's free + independent media??

...and of course it's all about Heroin, the Taliban, and winning the war in Afghanistan (good luck on that-- it only destroyed the USSR, but good luck on that one, BHO). And all in all it sounded like a Pepsi commercial.

Sorry Annie, but your messiah is a NWO lackey and his speech was great, if and only if you only pay attention to his suit, and the rest of his veneer. Certainly not if you actually listened to his speech.

Ad Hominems? I don't think you do, because you can't even take criticism.

Next. Jagofff is infact a corruption of Jack + Off, Appalachian etymology? perhaps, but unlikely. In the 50's to jag off was to shoot heroin into your veins. But you ducked & dodged the point; which was you complain and dismiss the radio caller because he used the word "bullshit" and then continue with your own fuck, jagoff, asshole, and come back with Ad Hominem-shit and CUNTS.

All's I'm saying is your discourse is, well to use an appalacian expression, it's "sorrier 'n karn," and shows an upbringing 'rough as a cob' And i could give a rats behind what you do to college professors or how great you think you are.

"I get the impression, lee, you missed Obama's main point when he mentioned the Balkans, and it was pretty nifty of him in Berlin to talk about justice prevailing when there are crimes committed against humanity"

Do you know any Serbians? do you know anyone (non NATO) who was there? Who got bombed? do you realize that whilst the USA may love the heroin dealing KLA enough to give them their own country, that the 'war' was based on lies and pseudo-ethnic cleansing? Maybe I missed Barack's point, what was it exactly? It was all one big Pepsi commercial to me.

Oh, and please explain which crimes against humanity you are talking about? the ones we are involved in committing, or the ones where only "they" are the bad guys?

Abbey, I have a few issues with your posts and your credibility...

1. how is it that you have judged doctoral dissertations... unless you are a tenured professor somewhere, that would be quite unusual.

2. add to that the fact that you seem to be proud of getting one or more professors fired. that is usually something that people on a university staff avoid at all costs... professors tend to protect their own. this is especially true because the community is incredibly small and burning bridges is always a last resort in academia, and certainly nothing you would ever brag about.

3. The caller could have very well been calling into Sirius left, which has a pretty large listening audience and has no ban on language

4. Just because a person uses a geographically typical term does not mean that they cannot currently reside in Chicago. Those are not mutually exclusive concepts... people do move, you know.

5. Everything the caller says is corroborrated by other sources. He did accomplish very little as a state senator, passing not a single piece of legislation his first 5 years in office. As a community organizer he did virtually nothing. The community he was responsible for saving as an organizer and later as a state official is in shambles today.

please don't bullshit us with your questionable credentials, or distract the message of the video with inane critiques that are not germane to the discussion.

other than that, I hope you have a wonderful day!

Yeah, I was a tenured full professor, emeritus now. I wrote here that I got administrators and a president fired, I said nothing about getting professors fired. Where the fuck did you get that idea? They did shit like Obama and his campaign people have done, including illegal and criminal shit. Some of you here ought to try to get Obama disbarred instead of farting in our eyes all the time. Our host here offered up a spurious radio phone-in excerpt but didn't say why he offered it, though the reason was transparent. My comments about the obscenities implied that it couldn't have been over-the-air radio, the fuck do I care how people talk or write? The talker was incoherent and a fast-talking con-artist who sometimes had no idea what he was talking about, which means maybe he never knows what he's talking about. My credibility here doesn't mean shit, only the caller's and our host's.

Hey Lee,

I'm so relieved to hear that the war in Kosova was based on lies about pseudo ethnic cleansing. My spouse will also be delighted to phone home to Gjakova and tell his parents that their house--and everything they owned in the world--didn't really burn down the second night after the bombing began and that time when a Serb paramilitary held a gun to his head demanding 10,000 DM, while his father was on his knees in the mud saying kill me please, just don't kill my son--well it was all just a practical joke.

Finding good in his Berlin address doesn't make me an Obama fan. I'm looking for any reason not to be depressed come November. With Hillary gone, I'm bored. I'd convinced myself that I'd sleep better at 3 a.m. had she won. But can any of us blame people who see the writing on the wall, see BHO winning, and who haven't given up watching the news (like I have)(not really) hoping for substance?

Lee, "jagoff" is Pittsburghese for "jerk". Google is my friend.

Abbey -- my reasons were transparent? Oh, DO let me know.

I thought I had stated my reasons. Of course, those with a grudge or a grindable ax won't leave the matter at that, and will scry stuff that just ain't there between
the lines.

I presumed that this came from some internet radio thang where the George Carlin wannabes of the world may speak freely. But one reason for posting this (as should have been clear from the post's title) was to ask readers if they could offer any further ID.

I dont like Gerard. I personally think he is a sycophantic moron. But he seems to be ripping off a broader theme here.

I also noted the first whiff of anti-Obama push-back from a colleague here in the UK. It seems to be arrogance related. Acting presidential too early and all that.

Still dont get why the betting indices are favour Obama so heavily. I suspect the problem is that he is running against a really horrible candidate. This "ugly" competition really is gonna be tough to call.

And boy, this "light-bringer" sure generates a lot of heat!

McCain is not a really horrible candidate, except to the extent that all GOPers are horrible. He seems to represent the Dole wing of that party, which is probably the least awful faction.

By any standard, all indicators favor the Dems this year. An unpopular war. High gas prices. Uncertain economic times. A failed Republican presidency.

Obama should be flying.

CitizenK it may be used in Pittsburgh but that don't mean is hasn't been used before/elsewhere (personally i googled jagoff + etymology, jagoff + slang and jagoff + appalaichian) and most of the non heroine ones do say that its a corruption of jerk off

LastLemming, i am sorry for your husband's suffering, as i am to hear about the suffering of albanians, macedonians, non-KLA Kosovars, Bosniaks Serbs and Croats. I am incensed by the violence and saddened by the sheer hate. But that doesn't make it ethnic cleansing. There were ethnic conflicts all around, and many innocent were killed or begged to die, but that wasn't what it was all about.

Just as it was fairly easy (they thunk) to create chaos + ethnic conflict in order to bring the Iraq Oil Corporation back to life in the past 5 years (thanks to the Bernard Lewises and Grand Chess Games), it was well known in the 80s that the foformer yugoslavia was an equally potent powder keg. And they wanted it to go off, just like they always do, for the same reasons as always... i dont think it's a joke, but funny how when the media was reporting about kosovo and their lack of natural resources, no one seemed to mention the mines, here's a good starting point about that side of this travesty, if you care to know.

Joe sorry for derailing your quest for the radio caller's id

I really realy don't want to encourage you in your paroxysms regarding the "annointed one", but here goes anyway..

From The Times
July 25, 2008
He ventured forth to bring light to the world
The anointed one's pilgrimage to the Holy Land is a miracle in action - and a blessing to all his faithful followers

Gerard Baker

And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.

The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow.

When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?”
In the great Battles of Caucus and Primary he smote the conniving Hillary, wife of the deposed King Bill the Priapic and their barbarian hordes of Working Class Whites.
And so it was, in the fullness of time, before the harvest month of the appointed year, the Child ventured forth - for the first time - to bring the light unto all the world.

He travelled fleet of foot and light of camel, with a small retinue that consisted only of his loyal disciples from the tribe of the Media. He ventured first to the land of the Hindu Kush, where the

Taleban had harboured the viper of al-Qaeda in their bosom, raining terror on all the world.

And the Child spake and the tribes of Nato immediately loosed the Caveats that had previously bound them. And in the great battle that ensued the forces of the light were triumphant. For as long as the Child stood with his arms raised aloft, the enemy suffered great blows and the threat of terror was no more.

From there he went forth to Mesopotamia where he was received by the great ruler al-Maliki, and al-Maliki spake unto him and blessed his Sixteen Month Troop Withdrawal Plan even as the imperial warrior Petraeus tried to destroy it.

And lo, in Mesopotamia, a miracle occurred. Even though the Great Surge of Armour that the evil Bush had ordered had been a terrible mistake, a waste of vital military resources and doomed to end in disaster, the Child's very presence suddenly brought forth a great victory for the forces of the light.

And the Persians, who saw all this and were greatly fearful, longed to speak with the Child and saw that the Child was the bringer of peace. At the mention of his name they quickly laid aside their intrigues and beat their uranium swords into civil nuclear energy ploughshares.

From there the Child went up to the city of Jerusalem, and entered through the gate seated on an ass. The crowds of network anchors who had followed him from afar cheered “Hosanna” and waved great palm fronds and strewed them at his feet.

In Jerusalem and in surrounding Palestine, the Child spake to the Hebrews and the Arabs, as the Scripture had foretold. And in an instant, the lion lay down with the lamb, and the Israelites and Ishmaelites ended their long enmity and lived for ever after in peace.

As word spread throughout the land about the Child's wondrous works, peoples from all over flocked to hear him; Hittites and Abbasids; Obamacons and McCainiacs; Cameroonians and Blairites.

And they told of strange and wondrous things that greeted the news of the Child's journey. Around the world, global temperatures began to decline, and the ocean levels fell and the great warming was over.

The Great Prophet Algore of Nobel and Oscar, who many had believed was the anointed one, smiled and told his followers that the Child was the one generations had been waiting for.

And there were other wonderful signs. In the city of the Street at the Wall, spreads on interbank interest rates dropped like manna from Heaven and rates on credit default swaps fell to the ground as dead birds from the almond tree, and the people who had lived in foreclosure were able to borrow again.

Black gold gushed from the ground at prices well below $140 per barrel. In hospitals across the land the sick were cured even though they were uninsured. And all because the Child had pronounced it.

And this is the testimony of one who speaks the truth and bears witness to the truth so that you might believe. And he knows it is the truth for he saw it all on CNN and the BBC and in the pages of The New York Times.

Then the Child ventured forth from Israel and Palestine and stepped onto the shores of the Old Continent. In the land of Queen Angela of Merkel, vast multitudes gathered to hear his voice, and he preached to them at length.

But when he had finished speaking his disciples told him the crowd was hungry, for they had had nothing to eat all the hours they had waited for him.

And so the Child told his disciples to fetch some food but all they had was five loaves and a couple of frankfurters. So he took the bread and the frankfurters and blessed them and told his disciples to feed the multitudes. And when all had eaten their fill, the scraps filled twelve baskets.

Thence he travelled west to Mount Sarkozy. Even the beauteous Princess Carla of the tribe of the Bruni was struck by awe and she was great in love with the Child, but he was tempted not.

On the Seventh Day he walked across the Channel of the Angles to the ancient land of the hooligans. There he was welcomed with open arms by the once great prophet Blair and his successor, Gordon the Leper, and his successor, David the Golden One.

And suddenly, with the men appeared the archangel Gabriel and the whole host of the heavenly choir, ranks of cherubim and seraphim, all praising God and singing: “Yes, We Can.”

Joseph, this is what I wrote: "Our host here offered up a spurious radio phone-in excerpt but didn't say why he offered it, though the reason was transparent."

This is what you had written: "I wonder who this is? [radio excerpt] The caller -- who claims to know Obama personally -- should be identifiable, given the clues. At any rate, I find his perspective interesting."

Later you use the word "clear" (referring to your implied purpose). Did you think I intended 'opaque' or 'obscure' when I wrote 'transparent'? Since when did 'transparent' mean hidden "between the lines"?

lee: there's nothing in D.A.R.E. (Dictionary of American Regional English) about 'jag' or 'jag off' and heroin, only (such) references to being drunk or high on pot.

Abbey y'all sure like to research up to the moment your point is made and no further, huh? Cassell's beats a "dictionary" based on 2700 interviews conducted between 1965 and 1970, in my opinion, but hey, don't take my word for it, read it for yourself, page 785

Anonymous said...

lee, dude! DARE is sui generis, not a 'dictionary' as you put it, it's more encyclopedic than that (and your '2700' number is inaccurate and maliciously misleading). It looks like the Cassell's dictionary derived its entries from DARE and other original sources, like most of the synoptic so-called dictionaries we rely on. But I originally used 'jagoff' as a noun, so I don't know what made you take off the way you did about the word. You've a horse named Lazarus, ain't it?
