MAJOR ALERT!! MARTIAL LAW???

dr. elsewhere here

Please forgive the extreme nature of the headline, but I just ran across this ALARMING POST on dailykos (linked through comments on emptywheel's latest post; more on that later), and felt it should be shared immediately.

Now, this could be some bizarre plant, but do read the post because the ACLU has weighed in.

This is NOT a pretty picture; spread this far and wide as quickly as possible. They've already floated this notion before, remember, in the spring before the '04 election? Prepping the masses, and all that MKUltra stuff.

I keep thinking, these thugs are just too damn smug to be willing to simply turn over the reins next January. They've definitely got something cookin', and it ain't grits.

(And even if this is all hooey, it's still scarey that we can so easily believe this heinous action of the current administration and its henchmen.)

Here's a link. It started in 1996 in Cleveland.

This dovetails creepily with another story that Corrente linked to yesterday, alleging that US troops are being trained to execute martial law and to shoot when necessary.

I won't vouch for the validity of that site, particularly any site that links to Prison Planet, so I took it all with a huge grain of salt-- but then this morning there was the diary on Kos, and the overlap of the two stories really spooked me. My first hunch is that this is one of those totally bogus fear memes that seem to sprout these days ubiquitously from God only knows what quarters and for who only knows what motives. Or at least I hope that's what it is.

i'm not at all sure how to take this stuff. i put a great deal of faith in marci's crew, but this was not id'd at all, admittedly.

i didn't notice it till after i'd already posted (my bad), but the aclu quotes are from a 2004 article. i find it pretty offensive that this piece presented the whole issue as if it were a newly emerging story.

yet another reason to not trust dailykos so much anymore. it being yet another example of just how badly things can get out of control when they get too big.

speaking of which, my last point in the post still holds; the scarey part is how easy it is to believe this sort of thing of these creeps. and it's not at all comforting that it's been going on for over a decade!

well, antifascist has the whole story, after i read the progressive piece in total.

the aclu comments are not so thoroughly taken out of context, though they are a few years old.

regardless, this issue is one of concern. i can't help but think of mussolini's definition of fascism: corporatism.

There have been many times when the President ordered the deployment of troops here in the US. I wish guys like the Joint Chiefs would comment here and explain some things, or Secretary Gates. Say, if all the grids go down, well, truckers can't pump fuel, all the frozen shrimp spoils, and it's panic in the streets; or if US forces attack Iran, meaning the military has signed on to the issue, but the People 'strike' or riot; or a visitor named Malcolm from Planet X lands at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday of Masters Week. It could happen, but only with the full support of the military, and, you know what? If the military think it has to happen, who am I to stand in their way, as long as no one gets hurt or locked up without warrant?
