Nazis, Nazis, Nazis...

It's no secret that I oppose Libertarianism in general and Ron Paul in particular. But even an enemy does not deserve a smear. Is this a smear, or is it a matter for serious concern?

The link goes to a handsomely-designed pro-fascist message board, which leads off with the following words from one Bill White, an unabashed swastika-bedecked Friend of Adolf:
I have kept quiet about the Ron Paul campaign for a while, because I didn't see any need to say anything that would cause any trouble. However, reading the latest release from his campaign spokesman, I am compelled to tell the truth about Ron Paul's extensive involvement in white nationalism.

Both Congressman Paul and his aides regularly meet with members of the Stormfront set, American Renaissance, the Institute for Historic Review, and others at the Tara Thai restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, usually on Wednesdays. This is part of a dinner that was originally organized by Pat Buchanan, Sam Francis and Joe Sobran, and has since been mostly taken over by the Council of Conservative Citizens.

I have attended these dinners, seen Paul and his aides there, and been invited to his offices in Washington to discuss policy.

For his spokesman to call white racialism a "small ideology" and claim white activists are "wasting their money" trying to influence Paul is ridiculous. Paul is a white nationalist of the Stormfront type who has always kept his racial views and his views about world Judaism quiet because of his political position.
Could there be any truth to this claim? Or is the aptly-named White simply making a bid for attention, as (some aver) he has been known to do?

The idea of white supremacists having a regular confab in a Thai restaurant does strike me as rather amusing.

White's claim evinced some interesting responses from his fellow bigots. Many of them score him for violating a "no outing" rule. (Isn't it cute? They've picked up lingo from the gay community.) A sampling:
Unfortunately, I think this is one of the times where Commander White shoots off his mouth without thinking about the big picture.

I really do not think he means bad by posting this; he just has a dislike of people who do not come fully out with their racial views.
I know alot of white supremacist involved in the Ron Paul campaign. I wish he would not shun away from his true supporters.
I still prefer to think that Paul is not a racist, and that Mr. White has entered the leg-yank competition. But I'm not sure.

I'm certain of one thing: Paul's appeal to progressives demonstrates that left-wing paranoia and right-wing conspiracism have attained a discomforting nearness.

Is this guy a Commander in the Palace Guards of Freedonia? What does he command?

I've seen this referenced around the net but never a comment from one of the white supremacist groups. It's fairly simple to decide if the facts can be determined. This is the only fact that we need. Is this true or not: "Both Congressman Paul and his aides regularly meet..."

The meetings, if they occur, are the only hurdle. These folks are truly dreadful and they're dangerous.

That's the "if" in play. Who is this commander? Why is he speaking up. If the neo-Nazis have a sweet deal with even a "very long shot" next President of the USA, you think they'd keep quiet.

If true, adios Ron. If not, who is behind the disinformation?

Two thoughts. First, Paul speaks articulately about the invasion of Iraq and asks people to consider how we'd react were we invaded. I wouldn't expect a neo-Nazi to speak in those terms. Second, what kind of white power guys are they, meeting in a Thai Restaurant? International House of Pancakes is just down the road.

I like Paul on the war and free speech/personal liberties. I don't care for his other views and find them totally out of place in a world that requires massive planning, domestically and internationally, to simply save the species. Crack pot Ayn Rand theoeries won't cut it.

As noted above, I am skeptical about this claim. On the other hand, the wording carries enough specificity of detail that I do think we have some kind of window into a world you and I would not normally be allowed to enter.

So...maybe. Probably not, but maybe.

I don't think Bill White is a disinformationist. He MAY be an exhibitionist or a liar. "Lying" should be distinguished from "disinformation," a word which deserves a more restrictive definition. (And if I have used it too loosely in the past -- apologies.

I'm getting a little sick about hearing that Ron Paul is good on the war. I am good on the war, YOU are good on the war, but that doesn't mean that you or I should be president.

Your expectations about what a neo-Nazi would say under which circumstances are very restrictive. No offense, but you seem to have a simplistic, cartoony version of fascism.

Did you know, for example, that at nearly every Nazi rally in the 1930s in America, there would be an American Indian on stage, and there would be a few words (quite true words) spoken about the injury done to the original Americans?

Did you know that a surprising number of Nazis in the 1950s and '60s favored the USSR over the US?

Did you know that some of the strongest French voices against the war with Algeria either were fascist or became fascist?

I suggest you read up Kevin Coogan's "Dreamer of the Day," a biography of Francis Parker Yockey which is really an overview of post-war fascism. That's just for starters.

1. Its awful strange that there is no off-the-cuff racist remark made by Paul that has been recorded or witnessed anywhere.

2. Paul refuses to accept Medicare/Medicaid as a doctor. Certainly that must have lead to situations where he turned away minorities. Where are they?

3. I think the Patriot/Militia groups are so heavily infiltrated (particularly the leadership) by the FBI or the SPLC that there would have been far more damning evidence released.

Its a smear job.

This is an interesting comment on the megaphone in the post.

Of course, Bill White's claim did not do much more than incite a great deal of laughter. But in their haste to get this message out, one of Bill's minions slipped up.

Note the tiny little icon indicated by the arrow in the Windows toolbar. It's a megaphone. But not just ANY Megaphone, it is the icon proving that the member of Bill White's American Nazi group is ALSO a member of Megaphone, the Israeli propaganda communications network!

Here is what the Megaphone looks like when it is running.

We're at 26% - 69% approve/disapprove of the Iraq war. 49% want out in less than a year. That's why someone with dreadful domestic policies gets props. He taps into a public that learned on its own that this war is awful and Paul, for all his weaknesses, gets the halo effect.

I confess! I don't know much about the U.S. Nazi subculture other than their bad works as per the Southern Poverty Law Project.

You're right on verification. And that's the interesting point. If Paul met regularly with neo Nazis, as the Commander clams, then he has behaved in a way that coddled a group of violent racist thugs. I can't imagine anyone doing that and then running for president. But then, I couldn't imagine that a guy would win the presidency after failing at every job he ever held get elected president.

Here is the infamous restaurant
Tara Thai

Looks pretty good until you dig a little deeper.
Arlington Health Department

At this point, given all that's gone on, very little would surprise me. I'd like to see someone nail it down.

Bill White is well-known to be an agent provocateur. The guy changed his website, Overthrow, from a libertarian-socialist site to a white nationalist site overnight, for crying out loud. Virtually every instance of white supremacist related violence is linked to him, yet if you look around online he has almost zero supporters. I used to read Stormfront daily (I'm not a WN, but there are some smart people on that board and I think they discuss important issues that others are afraid to touch), and nobody ever talks about Bill White favorably, or regards his website as interesting or useful.

I don't know who White works for, but a lot of people are threatened by Ron Paul, which is why you never hear his name mentioned on TV despite the strength of his grassroots campaign. White's boss probably had him make this statement to help sink Paul's popularity. Yes, Paul has a lot of stupid and unworkable ideas, but he has a lot of good ideas as well, and if he got elected the odds of his abolishing the income tax and things like that would be damn near zero, but he'd probably make a lot of positive changes.

For me, it really doesn't matter if Ron Paul is racist. It doesn't even matter to me if this is a smear. The fact is, he's accepted a $500 donation from Stormfront. something easy enough to return. Even that, however, is just bad politics and not really enough to label him as racist. But, why it doesn't matter to me is because proud racists are supporting this guy for a reason. Ron Paul doesn't have to be a racist. The policies that he is proposing empower racists. The policies also seem directly rooted in populist xenophobic nonsense in some cases. In an era where public figures have learned that you can't publicly be racist, it's the Ron Paul's that I watch for since, racist or not, their approach to government empowers the very tyranny they claim to oppose.
