Throwing 'em off their game. The Republicans excel at this tactic: After a Dem makes a bold statement against the administration, the conservative media willfully misinterprets the statement as a slur against Mom, apple pie, the flag and "our boys." The right-wing media gave that gambit another go when they responded with mock outrage to the MoveOn ad which referred to General Petraeus as "Betray-us."
Everyone with any sense knows that the "Betray-us" joke (which became old real fast) was just a lame bit of wordplay, not a serious accusation of treason. Did the Republican "mock outrage" ploy make an impression? According to a FOX News poll, most Americans agree with the MoveOn's main point. On the other hand, Bush's numbers are creeping up.
"An ass-kissing little chickenshit." That's how Admiral William Fallon characterized Petraeus. Fallon's outrage seems quite real. Will the FOX pundits denounce him as a traitor -- and if they do, will the Admiral give a damn? (Thanks to Covert History.)
Payback: On the battlefield of mock outrage, the Dems are finally learning to return fire. Yes, such attacks are insincere and calculated. Their purpose is to give the other side a sense of constant unease: "Anything you say will be twisted against you." Why should only one side play at that game?
Stand down! The Air Force plans to stand down on September 14. And conspiracy buffs are going wild.
Bush makes the sign of Satan during 911 memorial ceremony.
Usually, I don't place much stock in this sort of accusation. But I do have a sense of fun.
I'm always amused when guys like Alex Jones (who put together the collection of photos on the other side of that link) pretend to have an expertise on occultism, a subject about which he knows as much as I know about Korean grammar. The idea of a public figure making a public declaration of faith in the Evil One is inane. On the other hand, photos of this sort do have an impact on W's more superstitious Christian supporters, so keep circulating those images!
Thanks again, Gary...
Debat! Will Bunch has much more on the Debat debacle, but he misses the CIA connection, which is key. Read the man's writings, Will: In the great twilight struggle between the CIA and the neocons, Debat seems to be on the side of the former. He has not been an uncritical supporter of the administration.
Dig this:
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan have added their names to the list of people who say they were the subjects of fake interviews published in a French foreign affairs journal under the name of Alexis Debat, a former ABC News consultant.

Moveon.org really should have seen it coming. Personally I thought it was deplorable myself, so I can imagine how the wingnuts see it.
No more deplorable than, say, Rush Limbaugh was when Wes CLarke ran for President in 2004. He was accusing the General of being something akin to a James Bond supervillain, simply because Clarke had dared to announce himself as a Democrat. The inference of treason was MUCH more serious in that case.
Joseph I am so glad that you are back. Here's to your health! But one thing... does it have to be Satan? I mean could it not just be ASL and they are telling us they love us?
Careful with that Fallon quote about Petraues. It is apparently not true. The Conservative blogs are already hammering the source of the story and the conservatives appear to be right on this one.
Don't miss todays Covert History!
