I am he and you are he and we are all together

Just wanted to apologize for being away; I should make a proper return very soon, perhaps even tonight. My financial situation took a turn for the worst and my heath took a turn for the even worser. It's difficult to read the news -- let alone comment on it -- when one's ankle feels like it is in a bear trap.

Sleep is difficult, the pain pills are running low, and suddenly I understand why Rush did it. If I had a connection, I would soon end up like him -- stone deaf, insensible and shouting Goo goo ga joob into the nearest microphone. But we would still have very different political outlooks.

(Cue Homer Simpson impression): "Mmm! Yellow matter custard!"

Try acupuncture. I had the same problem, and at times could not walk. It will not cure you but greatly reduced the pain. If your in the Bay Area there is a Dr. of Chinese Med on Clement St. who is a worker of magic.

I too am recovering from ankle problem. 2nd time for me. First time I did this it took me 3 months on crutches and a year of therapy before I could walk again.

First: Stay off it. Easer said than done.

Second: Stay off it and keep off it. It may take months. It may soon feel better but don't let that fool you. It takes months.

Third: Do non weight bearing theropy. Moving it with no load on it. You will lose range of motion if you don't. Start doing a little each day if it is not in a lot of pain. You may find that to start you can only wiggle it a little without causing more pain. Every little wiggle helps.

Seriously consider some way to immobilize it while it heals. I use a fiberglass half cast. It straps on with velcro but I can remove it for cleaning and therapy. The rest of the time it protects the limb from inadvertent movement and doing dumb stuff to it.

Look into soft overlarge shoes with ankle support. Once I was off crutches I spent several months in funny looking shoes that looked like tevas but with an ankle riser and support. Had lots of funny wide straps and looked rediculous but helped a bunch.

There is nothing quile like the pain of a serious ankle injory. I have fallen down a sail boat mast, crashed a hang glider into a mountan and a few other stupid things in my life but nothing hurt like an ankle. When the ligaments get torn up and the nerves are damaged the sensation is indescribable.

Take it slow. Elevate all day. Take some anti-inflammatorys and maybe some pain killers, but not too much. It is meant to be sore to stop you using it while it heals.

Re-arrange your life. Don't try to use it for driving. It will heal, but it may be many months before you use it without pain. The more you fight to get back on it the more you will delay the healing. So take it easy.

I'm really sorry to hear things aren't going well. Hope you feel better soon.

To the poster above, can you please tell me the name of the Dr on Clement St? I've been looking for a good Bay Area acupuncturist for a long time, and I know there's several on Clement St. Which one do you like?

The best thing I've discovered for sprains, ligaments, bursitis, pulled muscles, arthritis, etc is a tablespoon (or two) of apple cider vinegar in warm water with honey to taste twice a day, everyday for ten days. This has saved me tons of money in doctor's bills over the years and has worked for almost everything I've tried it on. Cheap too!

I thought I tore my rotator cuff two years ago - it would flair up whenever I exercised with any intensity and be extremely painful for several weeks before subsiding. Since I don't have health insurance I just frowned and bore it until the pain became too great and I decided I needed surgery. After doing some research I realized that it was probably the bursus and not my cuff. I hit the ACV - which I had used before for other smaller problems - and within a week the pain was gone and it has not come back. I'm still kicking myself for not realizing sooner what the problem was and spending 18 months in unnecessary pain.

See Dr. Jarvis' Folk Medicine for further details, available everywhere as they published about a million copies in the 60s.

Best of luck Joe.

PS- I have two types of friends. The ones who listen to me about the ACV cure and the ones who don't. The ones who don't are still bitching about whatever problem they had. The rest just thank me.
