Round the bend

I usually save the non-political posts for the weekends. But you really should take a look at the most dangerous roads in the world, here and here. And I thought Decker Canyon Road in Los Angeles was bad! (Many thanks to the esteemed Professor Hex.)

(Actually, a certain Big Sur canyon contains a private road with an intimidation factor comparable to the thoroughfares pictured in the afore-linked article. A home in that canyon hosts a mural painted by yours truly. I may one day post pictures of it.)

I thought the most dangerous road in the world is the one in South Africa between the sleepy Afrikaner town of Rustenburg and the resort casino Sun City. The road is pretty straight, through semi-desert savannah, it is well paved and meticulously maintained.

So why is it so dangerous? Because the South African speed limit is about 80 mph, but South Africans ignore it and love high performance cars. They also drink prodigiously, especially at Sun City, and get in their cars for the trip back to Johannesburg barely able to stand but perfectly willing to try to drive at 90 mph. I would LOL, if it weren't so scary having experienced driving that road with those maniacs.

Not sure if it's still true, but for a long time South Africa had the highest car accident rate in the world, even though they have the best roads in Africa.
