Inspiration, anyone? [Updated]

dr. elsewhere here

Right on cue; I was putting together a quick post to remind readers that I'll be interviewing Elizabeth de la Vega in the next couple of days, so do submit your questions for me to ask her about her book, due out the end of this month, U.S. vs. George W. Bush et al.

...and found this new essay by her on tomdispatch about Sgt. Ricky Clousing, who is now serving three months for going AWOL in perhaps the most articulate and principled stand against the abuses of power I've run across since reviewing Thoreau last summer.

Read it; it will make your heart cry out in anguish, but louder, in hope.

And post questions for Elizabeth; it'll make for a much more interesting interview.

UPDATES: First, just heard from Elizabeth, and she has asked that the interview be moved to coincide more closely with the release of the book, which will be Dec. 1. That will of course be no problem for me, and will give each of you more time to be thinking of questions I can ask her. You've already contributed several great ones, so keep them coming; just pop them in anywhere in the comments. And bear in mind that she is a former federal prosecutor, and is therefore a wellspring of info in all things falling under the category of "federal crimes."

She also brought up a second request, which was to link directly to Ricky Clousing's website; do visit and offer this true American hero some well-deserved support.

Finally, I also ran across another story about another interrogator in Iraq, one that did not end so well as Ricky's. A different kind of courage in the face of the same godforsaken insanity; it will make your heart weep.

Here's my question. Is there any way short of impeachment to bring charges against Bush? We will never get the two-thirds required for conviction in the Senate. But the Paula Jones nonsense proved that private cases can be brought against sitting presidents. Is a class action suit possible?

They really shouldn't start with impeachment proceedings, as that will die a quick death in the senate, as the majority in 2007 will at best be slim. Only way out is to use the subpeona power to actually get the facts first before any impeachment actions are started. Sad to say, it might take until past 2008 to get all the info though. Maybe if we buried the new members of the house and senate to get going fast...
