Why are these men smiling?

They must have something planned:
Amid widespread panic in the Republican establishment about the coming midterm elections, there are two people whose confidence about GOP prospects strikes even their closest allies as almost inexplicably upbeat: President Bush and his top political adviser, Karl Rove.
Even absent a big surprise, I'm not at all happy with the Senate sitch, given the probability of a Lieberman party hop. Both Tennessee and Virginia are must-wins.

I'm also not loving how close some of the congressional races--which should not be close at all--have become by this point. I'm in Oregon, and our Dem incumbent, though she likely will pull this out, is sweating it. Not cool.

Yes, the scary part is knowing that those who engineered the stolen elections of 2000 and 2004 need only focus on stealing a few key races around the country where the margin of victory is likely to be less than 5 percent.
This is why all democratic candidates, especially those in these very tight races, should plan accordingly. At the very least, they should promise NOT to concede any elections until or unless they are monitored by representatives from all involved parties throughout the counting, and the results are independently certified. Imagine what a bold and powerful message it would send if all democratic candidates around the country banded together to make this promise now, instead of waiting for the sorrowful but ever-so-noble concession speeches from some? ...I know, bold and powerful are not words most would use to describe democrats over the past 10 years, beginning with the made- for-television Lewinsky "scandal."
...but a girl can dream.

The linked WP article says:
-snip-
"The question is whether this is a case of justified confidence -- based on Bush's and Rove's electoral record and knowledge of the money, technology and other assets at their command -- or of self-delusion."
-snip-

I say: "..technology and other assets...?" Do you think the WP is finally getting wise?

I've watched polls for many years. It is always a given that polls underestimate Dems by at least 5 points.

With the onset of Diebold, nothing is predictable.

both TN and VA are now officially exact ties.

if you go to electoral-vote.com, the map shows that based on the polls, dems have 50 and repugs 48, with those two ties. moreover, only NJ is considered really close, a statistical tie; all other blue states are at least outside the margin of error.

so yeah, why is rove smiling? we know why bush is; he's an idiot and he simply will not digest anything negative about him.

rove, on the other hand, is paid to keep up with this. the fact that he is appearing so nonchalant does suggest he knows how to massage the numbers.

couldn't some reporter ask to follow him on election night? and if he refuses, say well, i guess you are up to something all those conspiracy theorists have been claiming and now the academics back them up. too bad you won't prove them wrong.

never thought i'd say this, but would love to be a little birdie on his shoulder on the 7th, the whole 24 hours.

I've been saying for months that there is no way that BushCo can afford to allow a Democratic takeover of Congress. Look for all close races to magically go to the GOP and leave the Repugs with a bare majority in both houses. Bush and Rove know that the press will roll over again and pretend that the Dems somehow managed to waste another chance to regain the majority.

Screw voter turnout -- the Dems need to worry about lawyer turnout. If they don't have exit pollsters and election monitors on the ground in every precinct, they're too stupid to merit our support.
