World War III

Newt Gingrich has crafted what he considers a winning Republican slogan for the upcoming elections: "We're in a world war. The Republicans started it, and only they can win it!"

This odd mixture of hubris, hypocrisy and sensationalism conjures up an uncomfortable historical parallel. When was the last time an imperial power ruled by an unpopular autocrat alienated the populace by blundering into a global conflict?

I'm thinking of Russia under the Tsar. The results were unpleasant.

Are there any Bill Maher fans around?
Well I used to be one....
Apparently, Bill has been secretly itching for a war, possibly bcz he has run out of material on Iraq...well you know, how long can one beat a dead horse....
Bill, has decided, after sleeping on it till 11:00 ( his admission), that "he" after lengthy consideration.....agrees with.....drum roll please....The President!
One might wonder...on what subject Bill would be swayed to the side of the Prez....drum roll again....Israel's absolute right to defend itself. He very bravely puts his neck out and writes an article on The Huffington Post, first appoligizing for his recent absence and then letting us revel in his new found appriciation of the wisdom of GW ( wonder how many millions it cost the GOP) and doesn't even try to be funny about it.
I declare!....I am dropping HBO and Bill ...might even save me some money....which I will send to whomever calls for an end to this madness.

Blech. More power to you, beeta and all those who wish to join you. I've wanted to see Bill M. under a bus for a long time.

As for Newt--it's too bad he never thinks. Doesn't he care about the anniversary that just passed on July 17th? What awful timing and/or terribly bad taste.

If that is true, he should be imediately arrested as a war criminal under international law.

9:51 PM

I give up. What happened on July 17th?

Anon 7:51: On July 17, 1918, Czar Nicholas II and most of his immediate family were killed by the Bolsheviks.

Maybe I'm the only one around here whose Inappropriate Meter was tinged by the timing of Newt's comments, but--blech. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by yet one more reminder of how ignorant of history the neo-cons are though, seeing as how that was actually kind of...the point of Joe's post.
