"Then is Doomsday nigh..."

Cannon here: As Walter Mitty might have noted, the news these days tends toward the a-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa-lyptic.

GLACIERS ARE MELTING!
In fact, they're going at twice the rate previously estimated.
The implications are global," said Julian Dowdeswell, a glacier expert at the University of Cambridge in England who reviewed the new paper for Science. "We are not talking about walking along the sea front on a nice summer day, we are talking of the worst storm settings, the biggest storm surges . . . you are upping the probability major storms will take place."

The study also highlights how seemingly small changes in temperature can have extensive effects. Where glaciers in Greenland were once traveling around four miles per year, they are now moving twice as fast. While it is possible that increased precipitation in northern Greenland is somehow compensating for the melting in the south, the scientists said that is unlikely.
Let's see the Republican faithful try to explain away these findings...

THE ECONOMY IS GOING TO BURST!
The idiosyncratic Republican Congressman Ron Paul says it will happen any time now. He argues that the inevitable shift to the euro as the currency of choice for oil trading will destroy our current financial smugness.

If Paul's views are a little too idiosyncratic for your taste, then try this blog, which discusses the end of the housing bubble. Things look ominous: Record bankruptcies...rising mortgage delinquencies...more people deciding not to pay their credit card bills...no more consumer savings...

...and that's all before the you-know-what hits the you-know-what.

By the way, did you know that the United States government is in "technical default"? That is, there is a $5.5. billion gap between our debt and the congressional ceiling on debt...

Job creation lags behind population growth. Plants are closing, or moving overseas. Poverty is raising sharply. So are the numbers of people without health insurance. Rents are going up, and so are evictions. The already sky-high rents in major cities may well double as hundreds of thousands of people with unpayable mortgages are forced to sell or give up their homes.

WAR ON IRAN! It's inevitable. Here's a good look at what to expect...
In Iran itself, the initial results might also appear to be a "success" for the United States, but the prospect may seem very different when Iranian forces (such as a revitalised Revolutionary Guard) infiltrate into Iraq, seek to sabotage oil facilities in western Gulf states, and develop low-tech methods to disrupt tanker traffic.

In turn, these forms of retaliation would be met with further air strikes by US forces; this would result, within weeks, in the beginnings of a sustained and complex war, one that could certainly stretch to Lebanon and Afghanistan.

Third, the report points to the near-certainty that any attack on Iran would lead to the country setting out quite deliberately to develop nuclear weapons as quickly as possible, withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) forthwith.
This report doesn't discuss the hellfire which will rain down on our warships by advanced new missiles...sold to Iran by China...and thus paid for by all those dollars you spent at Wal-Mart.

But...hey. It's all good. After all, President Bush is right with Jesus. And Jesus is coming soon. Isn't he...?

The Ron Paul article is fascinating, less for its content than for the fact that an American policitian is actually willing to say these things in public.

Some of his analysis is open to question, but Paul does point to an interesting contradiction: the exercise of U.S. military power effectively guarantees the value of the U.S. dollar. At the same, time military spending is bankrupting the economy.

So you want the Republican faithful to explain away the latest scientific evidence on global warming? Perhaps you do not fully understand faith-based science.

See this article by Jerry Falwell
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=48778

..."global warming is an unproven phenomenon and may actually just be junk science being passed off as fact."

Now I believe this was written a few days before the article you refer to but it doesn't matter. No amount of evidence will change their minds.

Joseph,

You need to post a disclaimer at the top of your website:

"need to wear seatbelts when reading this blog--remember to breath deeply"

Jeezus Krimminey! Sometime within this year, we face a horrendous economic depression, a war with Iran and martial law to boot which will result in a complete and total lockdown and introduction of a police state in this country.

It is still relatively early in the day and I'm already completely stressed out over what is likely to happen soon, not to mention the upcoming "event" or "kaboom" that will happen later this year which Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld will seize upon to push this country into war with Iran and implement martial
law.

On top of all this, the gov will most likely pull the plug on all the bloggers and the blogosphere itself with the exception of Fox News authorized blogs.

I wish folks here would stop offering prophecies: U.S. economic "policy" is clearly unsustainable, but nobody knows how or when it will crash, or what form that crash will take.

Markets are too complex for this kind of predictive analysis. Any economist who could reliably predict interest rates a week or two ahead of time would be fabulously wealthy (from playing the futures market). But nobody can do it, even with a room full of computers. An economic collapse involves far more variables.

In a word, don't cry wolf. It's coming, but nobody knows when. Could be years away. Also, don't forget that the rest of the world, as much as they hate us, relies on the U.S. economy and has enormous direct investments in it. They can't afford to dump us (or their dollars). At least, not yet.

So don't worry, just party and get laid.... When it comes, there likely won't be any protection, even if you own a trailer full of gold.

I can only hope that the professional military will strongly push back against the administration's attempts to involve us in an attack on Iran.

They have seen the incompetence of the civilian leadership. Their brothers in arms in Iraq will be in overwhelming danger if the Shiite government reacts to the attack or allows Iranian infiltrators.
