Military rape

They say "Support our troops" -- but some soldiers are committing crimes no-one can defend. Rape of female enlistees has become a serious problem -- a deadly problem:
Last week, Col. Janis Karpinski told a panel of judges at the Commission of Inquiry for Crimes against Humanity Committed by the Bush Administration in New York that several women had died of dehydration because they refused to drink liquids late in the day. They were afraid of being assaulted or even raped by male soldiers if they had to use the women's latrine after dark.

The latrine for female soldiers at Camp Victory wasn't located near their barracks, so they had to go outside if they needed to use the bathroom. "There were no lights near any of their facilities, so women were doubly easy targets in the dark of the night," Karpinski told retired U.S. Army Col. David Hackworth in a September 2004 interview.

It was there that male soldiers assaulted and raped women soldiers. So the women took matters into their own hands. They didn't drink in the late afternoon so they wouldn't have to urinate at night. They didn't get raped. But some died of dehydration in the desert heat, Karpinski said.
War always squeezes the civilization out of soldiers. As the Abu Ghraib scandal demonstrated, quite a few of our volunteers come from the least-educated sectors of our society, and they are, not unexpectedly, reverting to savagery.

While there is clearly madness in the method, there may also be method in the madness.

Now that the Pentagon has destroyed the effectiveness of many state militias by deploying units to Iraq and forcing them to return without their equipment, it seems that they are working on destroying the effectiveness and morale of the regular army as well.

By employing the least well-educated and violent groups of young people and then further dehumanizing them in an ugly war that depends on harrassing and killing civilians, Rumsfeld is creating a force that would not hesitate to let themselves be deployed in the streets of American cities.

He has also purged the high command of its best officers, and a recent article pointed out that because of the extraordinarily high turnover of officers, the percentage of officers being promoted from captain to major has risen from 80% to 98%, further eroding the quality of the officer corps.

This may be merely incompetence, but the recent authorization by Congress to let the Pentagon pursue its own foreign policy independent of the State Department further erodes civilian rule.

Martial law is coming.

Unbelievable.

Or, maybe it isn't. Disappointing, though. I don't love everything that's ever been posted in Cannonfire's comments section, but for the most part I've assumed the people reading this site are still human enough to be moved by atrocities of this extreme nature.

Thanks for posting about this, Joseph.

I agree with notjonathon that the military is being deliberately destroyed. That this is happening is just one more nail in it's coffin.

Also - breaking revelation that recruitment quotas are being met through "waivers" to really lower the bar and get the warm bodies.
