Of parody and charity

I'm glad that my little foray into Gilbert & Sullivan (see below) tickled so many of you. Gladder still that the object of my parody seems to have retreated into oblivion. (Actually, I'm sure there's a cushy sinecure awaiting Mr. Brown at Albaugh's company.)

Too bad I couldn't polish one of my favorite couplets ...

I got the job that I hold now because of rancid hackery
Something something something something William Makepeace Thackery
In the meantime, I've been working on something to commemorate our Fearless Leader:

"...And I never used the big, big C."
What never?
"No, never."
What, NEVER?
"Well...hardly ever!"
So give three toots or maybe eight for the hearty captain of our ship of state...
You get the idea. Enough foolishness. These are serious days, yet I haven't the time for a serious post. But before leaving, I did want to ask some advice:

Does anyone know of a secular charity aiding Bush's victims in New Orleans?

I've donated to the Red Cross, but I felt guilty in doing so. Although I know they always do wonderful work, that organization is operating, in the current crisis, alongside the Southern Baptist church. Sorry if my feelings offend. But in my view, the Southern Baptists are a large part of the problem -- what with so many of being being part of the Bush Borg -- and I don't want to give them any more of my money.

Must we work through churches if we wish to aid our fellow human beings?

The Red Cross is not the sterling organization it makes itself out to be.

Cronyism is rife in the chapters, there's no accountability over where the money goes (and instant retribution for any R.C. employee who inquires), and there are reported links of the R.C. leadership to Bush and the Republicans, including (most recently) an evolving R.C. account of why it wasn't in N.O.'s sooner, which is increasingly kind to Our Great Leader.

As for charities -- Joseph, did you know that the the U.S. government website directed the general public to 3 primary charities, sand one of those 3 was Pat Robertson's? This is the same charity that collected money for Africa, but used the proceeds to transport mining equipment to Zaire, for Robertson's company. And we haven't even mentioned the amounts Pat no doubt skims off the top for personal and administrative expenses.

After an outcry, I believe the Robertson charity was removed from its prominent position, but still left in place alphabetically.

This is indeed faith-based charity -- contribute your money, and hope that maybe some of it actually gets there.

Speaking of Southern Baptists:
there is an interesting anecdote in Molly Ivins book 'BUSHWHACKED" in which an unidentified member of the Texas legislature tells her
" ... you know what's wrong with our Southern Baptists? we don't hold them undewater long enough."

Habitat for Humanity is responding to Hurricane Katrina victims by helping the poor communities rebuild their homes. You can find out about it here: http://www.habitat.org/disaster/2005/katrina/

Best Friends is the largest animal sanctuary in the US. Though they are located southern Utah, don't be put off by their geography. I have volunteered there, and it was easily one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. These folks are hard-working visionaries, and have worked for decades to improve the lives of abandoned and abused animals. They immediately moblized after the hurricane and are accepting donations for the crews in LA.

The Camp Casey group and Veterans for peace have set up a camp in Covington, LA. Michael Moore suggests mailing supplies or making PayPal donations to them.

I AGREE. I NEVER MET A "CHRISTIAN" I LIKED OR TRUSTED. THEY ARE A HUGE PART OF THE PROBLEM. THEY ARE BUSH'S BASE.

For those of you who are looking for non-religious option for helping, here is a link to a site that lists grassroots, community based and culturally sensitive non-profits who are committed to helping the people most affected by this disaster:

Here is a secular organization soliciting contributions for Katrina Victims:

The Center for Inquiry - International | www.centerforinquiry.net

URGENT MESSAGE FROM PAUL KURTZ
We are deeply distressed by the terrible tragedy caused by Hurricane Katrina. As secularists, we believe deeply in our obligations to our fellow human beings; and we must do what we can to help those who have been displaced from their homes and are in need of basic supplies and medical care in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The Secular Humanist Aid and Relief Effort (SHARE) announces the launch of a major fund drive to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We are sending an appeal to our readers and supporters around the world to assist us in this heroic effort and donate today.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and many are without power or water. Unknown numbers of people still remain trapped in New Orleans, and emergency response teams are overwhelmed. The Center for Inquiry and its affiliated organizations have launched an initiative to raise charitable funds for the area. We encourage all humanists, skeptics and rationalists to step forward and make a contribution through SHARE.
All donations to SHARE from this campaign will go to AmeriCares for the benefit of victims of Hurricane Katrina. AmeriCares is a nonprofit aid and relief organization that coordinates distribution of medical supplies in response to natural disasters and for long-term humanitarian assistance programs. AmeriCares maintains stocks of emergency medical supplies and works with corporate donors to get needed supplies to disaster areas. They provide blankets, disaster relief supplies, vaccines, diapers, water purifers, tents, food, and other emergency items. AmeriCares also has an extremely low overhead, so donations go directly to help those in need.
I hope you will join us in this endeavor and donate today to help provide medical care and supplies to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
You can make your contribution through our secure online server at https://secure.ga3.org/05/donate_to_help_katrina_victims.
Sincerely,

Paul Kurtz
Chairman, Center for Inquiry

I think America's Second Harvest is another good choice. People I trust who are very critical of the Red Cross are big supporters, and now I am too.
And Habitat just announced a new fund for New Orleans headed by "po' little Harry Conick", as Dr. John called him.

I just ran across "Of parody and charity" while conducting some research on various Internet Detective sites. Even though it wasn't really what I was searching for, I think the people who visit your site might still be interested in reading our reviews of various sites including Internet Detective. I started creating these review sites to help people determine what's good and what's bad on the net. As you know, the more information people have before spending their hard earned money, the better. Your readers can even add their opinions for others to read. By the way, I enjoyed reading the posts on your site.
