An addendum to the post below. Thoughts of the S&L scandal of yore sent me back to Pizzo's classic "Inside Job." In the opening chapters, Pizzo describes how the mafia would "bust out" a legitimate business -- that is, they would get control of it, then strip it of all its assets. Pizzo was the first to theorize an organized plot to bust out the S&Ls nationwide in the wake of Reagan's deregulation. Folks scoffed at the idea. He was proven correct.
Question: Is that what is happening on a nationwide scale today? Are Bush, Cheney and Rove overseeing a massive bust out of the entire damn country?
This theory does have the virtue of explaining their epic mismangement of this country. We've exported all our jobs and live in debt to communist Asians and those ghastly socialistic Europeans. The easily-hypnotized Jesus-addled red-staters remain convinced that America has the highest standard of living in the world, when in fact we do not -- have not had that for some time, actually. And we are sinking, sinking, sinking.
If recession hits, we will have no Keynesian solutions available, since we've tapped out our creditors. If the housing market bubble bursts when bad times hit, if lots of foreclosures occur across the nation, financial institutions will fail.
Was this catalog of economic horrors planned?
And what do our current masters plan to do with all their ill-gotten loot, once this country has pulled an Argentina? Where do they plan to spend it? To paraphrase Jack Nicholson in "Chinatown": How much better do they expect to eat -- as they dance around the corpse of the superpower they've robbed and killed?

When idiots like Grover Norquist gloat about drowning government in the bathtub, you have wonder what these people think is going to happen to their assets and their six figure no-show think-tank jobs when the U.S. government is dead in the bathtub, and there's no money for corporate bailouts, and the guards at the gated community are robbing the residents.
These people are so full of themselves and their self-serving ideology that they can't see at thing.

It's funny that someone should mention France in the context of a discussion about what the hell the neocons think they're doing...I've met a lot of so-called liberals, leftists and Democrats who have pulled up stake (or are planning to do so) to live in France because they "just can't take it" here anymore. I think...some not so great things about those people, especially because a lot of what they bitch the most about is how extensive the control the rightwing, WMP-abusing uberlords have is and I happen to know a thing or two about the life you must have already led to be able to afford to bail to France at this point. If people like Norquist truly do become exNONpatriots after the Implosion of the mess they've made, they may not find themselves entirely safe in their new homes, either.
Yes, Jen. Maybe somebody should remind these crooks that the planet just isn't that big anymore, that they can take their ill-gotten gains and safely live somewhere else. Jews like Simon Weisenthal devoted half a century to tracking down Nazis. Do the neocons suppose the rest of us will just shrug and sigh, 'oh, well--stuff happens', and get on with the onerous burden of paying off the trillions that our country is now in hock for, so much of it now in their pockets?

There _may_ be something to this. The 19th century was a time of great exploitation but was it also a time of frequent political assassination? If you count World War I as the 'actual' boundary between the 19th and 20th centuries, we had three presidents assassinated, and only one since.
i've been entertaining roughly the same idea since i first heard the "enron trader tapes" last year, and it was painfully obvious that not only were those sociopaths willfully reveling in their crimes, they were very clear between themselves that bushco was enabling them.
