Wilson and Wurmser

Just a short squib here -- I still want the longish post below to garner attenton. (I've cleaned up a couple of typos.) Some bloggers have fingered a potential new leading player in the Plame affair: David Wurmser, Bolton's special assistant -- another neo-con with a Likud ueber alles 'tude. Check out Dark Wraith Forums and this Kos diary.

By the way, I'd like to thank the readers who contributed such thought-provoking responses to the post below on the CIA and the origins of Plame-gate.

Joe, I was wondering about your's and others here's assessment of this frightening article I found on World Net daily. Considering what commenters have posted here, what if something like this occurs? The country would probably become a police state for the remainder of the Bush presidency and beyond.
This is a truly scary prospect.
Am I being too gullible here? Too paranoid?

Seems to me any major attack on the US today, even if it is not nuclear, even if it does not kill anything like 4 million people, would be all that is necessary to bring on US dictatorship.

An attack the size of the London transit bombings would probably not be big enough. But what this article describes would indeed end US democracy -- that is, if the Bushniks were able to hold onto power.

An interesting question is whether, with Bush's popularity tanking, Americans under terror attack might react as Spain did, and unseat the government on the grounds that it is ineffective in protecting the country.

But I doubt this can happen. BushCo has a chokehold on the means of enforcing tyranny. Any rebellious attempt would be way too little and too late.

I think the possibility of "Apocalypse" is one the right wing, particularly the "christian" rightists, would welcome. It dovetails beautifully with their End Times hysteria.

I doubt bin Laden can mount an attack this widespread. But even one city under nuclear attack would be enough to set off the emergency machinery that would, effectively, end democracy. A "softening-up" process using smaller attacks would be desirable for the plotters, as well.

No doubt that article is scary. But please do not discount the possibility -- it may even be a probability -- that Mr. Bush and/or elements faithful to him are doing their part to bring this about.

Using genuine terrorists to conduct domestic false-flag operations seeming to come from an enemy is, unfortunately, a political weapon an increasingly unpopular president can't very well ignore. It is, quite simply, his best option. His "nuclear option," if you will.

Wish I didn't even have to consider the possibility that a US president would descend to treason to destroy democracy and cement his hold on power indefinitely. But Bush is a real criminal, and the people around him are criminals.

I'll be less surprised if they start one than if they don't. And I'm afraid I see Bush remaining president well beyond 2008 -- if not via the bill to abolish the two-term limit, then via sufficient violence to eliminate the presidential elections for the foreseeable future.

I'm scared too.
