Meet the new Kissinger

Hillary will be the Secretary of State, it seems. A few posts down, I reminded readers that the SOS position was robbed of its usual significance and power during the Nixon administration, when national security adviser Henry Kissinger began running foreign policy, shunting aside William Rogers.

The Kissinger of the Obama administration will be Marine General Jim Jones, who is poised to become Obama's new national security adviser. (There was previously some talk of Jones taking the veep position.) This piece makes clear that Jones is demanding as much power as possible, so I don't think that my Kissinger/Rogers reference is wide of the mark.

Yeah, I know: Jim Jones. You may as well get your Kool-Aid jokes out of the way right now, although a better use of your time would be to check the man's resume.
Following his retirement from the military, General Jones became president of the Institute for 21st Century Energy[3], an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce[8] and chair of the board of directors of the Atlantic Council of the United States.[9] He also served as chair of the Independent Commission on Security Forces of Iraq, sponsored by the Atlantic Council of the United States.[10]

General Jones joined the Board of Directors of the Boeing Corporation on June 21, 2007. He serves on the company's Audit and Finance Committees. [11]

On May 28, 2008, General Jones was elected to the board of directors of Chevron Corporation. [12][13]

Diplomatic roles

Jones was asked twice by Condoleezza Rice to be Deputy Secretary of State after the resignation of Robert Zoelick. He declined.
Here's more about the Atlantic Council, which is the epicenter of Yankeeness, as Carl Oglesby defined the term. Surprisingly, the Council does not yet have a prominent place in the lore of paranoid theorists. That will change. (Start here.) On the Council, Jones works closely with -- but of course! -- Brent Scowcroft.

Plus ça change

Neither Gen. Jones nor the Atlantic Council are so bad as seems to be inferred in the above superficial analysis.

Jones is certainly no Henry Kissinger. To put this in very simple terms, Kissinger was never a Marine or a member of the U.S. armed forces, and I don't think he has ever taken an oath to defend and protect the Constitution. Jones hasn't been knighted by Queen Elizabeth either.

We live in scary times. We are looking at an unqualified (at best) President being put into office next year. Maybe we should at least get some conceptions of the PERSON of the President, and the INSTITUTION of the Presidency... and then try to work with that understanding gained, carefully and responsibly.

There are people who intend to destroy the United States of America, but I don't think Obama is among them, nor is anyone named above, except that murdering despicable piece of shit Kissinger.

I wasn't aware of providing any analysis whatsoever. Just a few facts.

Joseph, I took the title, "Meet the new Kissinger," to be the conclusion that the facts were offered in support of. The CNN piece, which "makes clear that Jones is demanding as much power as possible" [I'm not confident CNN often makes much clear], also says Jones has a warm relationship with Sen. Clinton; had you pointed that part out, I might have seen your post as a sign that we may see the institution of the Presidency tend to uphold the Constitution more, and act more wisely in international relations in the future, with Clinton (as SoS) and Jones cooperating to that end.

Maybe it was the fact that you often analyze so well, and I longed for such in your post that drove my first comment.

For some reason, the Atlantic Council link you provided isn’t working just now – I suppose it will shortly. Here is an internet archive cache of it with an article featuring Jones. (The page changes at least once or twice a month.) http://web.archive.org/web/20070108112907/http://www.acus.org/

Joe, I don't know what you did, but I just ran the gender analyzer on you and got back 50%! You actually LOST 1%. Perhaps your musings on who was hotter were phrased in lesbian grammar.
