JCS Chairman won't endorse briefing on Iran

General Peter Pace won't back up the Baghdad "background briefing" which tried to convince the world that Iran is behind the Iraqi insurgents.
General Pace said he was not aware of the Baghdad briefing, and that he could not, from his own knowledge, repeat the assertion made there that the elite Quds brigade of Iran's Republican Guard force is providing bomb-making kits to Iraqi Shiite insurgents.
Iranian materials may have made their way over the border, says Pace, but he knows of no evidence of complicity by Iran's government. And how many American news outlets have mentioned all this? So far...none. (Thanks to Covert History.)

Check out Juan Cole's analysis of this latest piece of Pentagon disinformation (sorry, don't have the link on hand).

The numbers just don't add up. Cole also points out that The New York Times is repeating its pre-war performance on Iraq, in legitimizing these lies. The utter mediocrity and slavishness of the NYT is really beyond belief (so much so, one tends to forget how bad it is, lending it additional credence each time).

The late John Hess (who used to work there) pointed out a very basic truth: the NYT is highly authoritative, unless you happen to know something about the subject under discussion. Then, the utter lack of knowledge displayed by the reporters is either staggering or hilarious, depending on your perspective.

Further evidence that Bush and Cheney have commandeered the US military. The Joint Chiefs must be seething about how they have been sidelined, and must stand by impotently while the greatest war machine in world history is run into the ground. It is not hard to imagine circumstances in the near future in which the military mounts a coup and sweeps these idiots out of office.
