Nominated

Atrios, by way of AP, has a photo of Harriet Miers briefing W on August 6, 2001 -- the same day he received the now-infamous Presidential Daily Brief. As I've argued in the past, fairly good evidence suggests that the briefing was originally much longer. You think that document in the pic could be, you know, it?

I'll be posting more soon -- and in the future, I should have posts up on a more frequent basis. In the meantime, perhaps a kind reader can confirm the rumor that Bush nominated his horse to be Secretary of the Department of Agriculture.

Over at kos, Georgia10 points out that Ms.
Meiers's confirmation hearing will provide
much opportunity to question her on subjects
such as the Downing Street Memo, the 8-6
PDB, Bush's Nat'l Guard Records, and the Plame leak.

A poster at DU maintains that since the
White House counsel was not permitted to
invoke the attorney-client privilege in
the Ken Starr investigations (his client
was considered to be the American People,
not the President) that therefore Ms.
Meiers will not be able to hide behind
that either.

Ill--nice. I'm only half-joking when I tell people that Bush and Co. are afraid of horses, mirrors, crossing bridges over water, (I swear I read someplace that Bush IS afraid of that) and are very, very obsessive-compulsive (that's definitely a confirmed issue, about Bush at least). At this point, who would be surprised if Bush threw an actual animal into the ring of his nominations for high government offices? The horse might do a better job than some of the possible alternatives.

I'm extremely wary of the H.M. situation. To me, like the Roberts' nom, it's almost entirely about loyalty. But--there are a lot of things I just don't "get" about it. This is not to say we all shouldn't be damn frightened of both picks.

Hmmmm. I just deleted several paragraphs of comments about WHY we should fear these kids, not so much because of their close relationship to Bush, but because of the role that Orrin Hatch played in picking them out. You know what's irritating me most about the Meiers situation? I know it should be the continued threats to my privacy rights, but it's actually the fact that if there's an alternate universe in which I have any children and one of them happens to be female...Harriet was always me favorite surname for a girl. Goddamnit.

Might have had more luck on the Gulf Coast with President Bush's pooch in charge... Wait... Brownie did the very best he could. At least that is what he testified. And as we all know, words under oath are bond... sacred... crap...

Wasn't Condi under oath when she said the
8-6 PDB was hostorical in nature?

jen, thanks for the halloo (it's lll, not Ill, though i'd never considered how it might be misconstrued!). i think you're right to be concerned about the loyalty thing; it was chilling to hear bush say he knows she will not stray from his point of view 20 years from now. he might just as well have presented her leash for the public to view!

and as for your liking the name harriet, it is nice. so i empathize with your disappointment. but consider this: i'll assume you've enough feminist in you to respond without offense at the observation that there are SO many female names that are variations of male names (e.g., roberta, alexandra, jonatha, patricia, and on and on), but NONE the other way around! so, not to pick any fights or diss on your fave or anything, but i've sworn off those names forever. just my little ocd thant.

as per that, yeah, bush is that and far more. as a mental health professional, he is in my humble opinion a flaming narcissist, with a good dose of anti-social thrown in. personality disorder all the way. intractible. untreatable. why would they need treatment? they're perfect and it's always everybody else's fault.

whatever. wish you had not deleted those paragraphs. i'm interest in what folks are thinking about this. very intriguing that she'll have to answer questions about all those insider issues. wonder if the bushies thought about that, and the fact that they set up the noose. wonder also if reid and demco thought about that, too.

there's something oddly cagey about reid's role in this. i'm finding myself smiling in a real perverse way when i think about it. he encouraged her nomination, and it already appears it's going to tank from starboard and NOT port! ya gotta wonder if he knew full well how the response would go, and had in mind all along just this very fact that she'll be wide open for all those questions.

just delicious. hard to imagine how she'll field all those questions. what a fantasy it would be for leahy to show up with a veiled poster on the first day of questioning and present that photo of 8/6/01, and ask - right off the bat - is this that document? you were there screening docs that day; did you screen that one? if not, why not? and how would you characterize the nature of that document? if it was merely historical, how would you have advised the president? given history, how do you feel about being so unfathomably wrong?

yep; as delicious as double fudge sundaes!

Maybe it's the same horse whose dummy he was flogging out on the ranch according to Laura.
