Was Obama blackmailed? Was Cheney in charge?

We've spoken before about NSA whistleblower Russell Tice. Remember when he said this?
Now here’s the big one. I haven’t given you any names. This was is summer of 2004. One of the papers that I held in my hand was to wiretap a bunch of numbers associated with, with a 40-something-year-old wannabe senator from Illinois. You wouldn’t happen to know where that guy lives right now, would you? It’s a big white house in Washington, DC. That’s who they went after. And that’s the president of the United States now.
In the above video, Tice goes further. (Thanks to reader D. for the link.) Tice describes a secret spying program on America's generals, including David Petraeus and Colin Powell. NSA scuttlebutt held that Dick Cheney was behind it all.

Did they find something on Powell? That would explain a lot.
Powell's complicity with the Bushcists can easily be explained by the appointment of his son as chairman of the FCC.

Powell's predilections are pretty well demonstrated by the devastating series in Consortium News by Norman Solomon and Robert Parry, going back to Vietnam days.

I appreciate the longing that some Obama supporters feel for the Great Progressive Leader they thought they voted for. I can imagine them grasping at the notion that the reason why their "innocent" leader is doing so very many downright evil things is that he has fallen into the clutches of the Ur-Devil Cheney, who is blackmailing him into betraying his "real" principles. It's the sort of plot device that is common in stories targeted at 12 year-olds - and that is exactly the mental and social age of the average fauxgressive.

I can't imagine you falling for a line like that, Joseph. Obama acts the way he does because he's an unprincipled crook, and because it's to his personal advantage to do so. You spotted this in '08, and in '12 you made a very deliberate calculation to side with the devil you knew over the one you didn't know but for some reason imagined might be worse.

If Obama's being blackmailed, it's because he's done something even worse in private than he has in public. I find it hard to imagine what that might be - and I think it's ultimately irrelevant. Obama is a bad man, and a worse President. That's really all you need to know. Everything else is just a matter of degree.
It's not a matter of weltanschauung, Prop. One goes where the evidence leads. Right now, Tice is giving us evidence. I'm not saying that he is the only whistleblower or that he is right about everything necessarily or any of that.

It's like working out a jigsaw puzzle. Every time you get a new piece, you can make a better guess as to what the full picture should look like. Those guesses are refined or revised as new pieces come in.
