The money: A spooky story

I'll be sad, but not too sad, if Obama wins the election, as he now seems likely to do (thanks to the ill-timed financial meltdown). On November 5, the fun starts.

A switch will flip -- listen closely and you'll hear the sound -- and the media will segue from Adoration Mode to Investigative Mode. The Kos Krowd expects America to be transformed into a Whole Foods Elysium, and when Obama does not give them what they want, all of those adoring progs will turn into outraged progs. The nation's citizenry may come to despise O almost as much it dislikes W.

The process of transforming Obama into Public Enemy #1 will take a couple of years, maybe more time, maybe less time. Our job will be to push things to the told ya so stage as soon as possible.

One way to accomplish that goal is to focus on the financing of the campaign now drawing to a close. The whole affair has stunk for a long time, yet few in the mainstream media have bothered to comment on the stench.

A friend once told me that he would watch in fascination, day after day, as Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker grossly oversold time shares at their little holiday camp. My friend would pop open a beer and stare at the TV while while muttering: "Do they really think they can get away with this? In public?"

Eventually, a day of reckoning came for the Bakkers. Eventually, a day of reckoning will come for Obama.

If you want to hear a faint pre-echo of that day, visit Slate. Yes, I said Slate, the web outlet of the Messiah Supporting National Barack Company. The headline tells the story: "Yes, He Can: Barack Obama should be able to disclose his small-dollar donors pretty easily. Indeed he should -- but he won't do it, and his excuses for not doing it are even thinner than the Lightbringer's skin. Slate lists good reasons for making the list available:
Finally, making the list public would rebut McCain's broad and unsubstantiated claims that the list (and the huge sums of money it represents) is shot through with fraud.
Heh heh heh. And we know that those charges cannot possibly be true. Right? Because they are unsubstantiated. Right? If the Obama camp denies an accusation, then the accusation must not have any validity. Denial equals disproof, at least where the Lightbringer is concerned. Right? Right? [Whistles tunelessly] My. It sure is dark. Is that a graveyard we're passing...? [More whistling]

By this point, you've probably heard about the obviously fake names on the Obama donor list. The problem is massive:
Until very recently, the Obama campaign had no safeguards in its online fundraising Web site designed to weed out foreign donors. Instead, its operations appeared to be designed specifically to enhance the flow of illegal money....
In addition to the donations the campaign has disclosed, however, it has taken an unprecedented $218 million from donors whose names it is keeping secret, according to FEC spokesman Robert Biersack.

That money came from individuals who in theory never passed the threshold of $200, the limit the FEC set for public disclosure of a donor’s name and place of residence, so there is no way of knowing how much foreign money could be included in that amount.
Or see here:
You can contribute to Obama’s campaign via his Web site in amounts from $5 to $2,300, in each instance. There appear to be no sensible checks in the submission form, and there’s only a simple note at the bottom of the page that states that an individual can only contribute up to $2,300 per election and that the contribution made on the Web site page “is designated for the general election.”

But, this reminder is virtually meaningless since no wording on the Web site page states that donors must use their real names. Nor does the Obama donation page require that you confirm that you are using your real name.

In other words, in Barack Obama’s world, your decision to obey FEC (Federal Election Commission) laws is entirely voluntary.
If the money is funny, where is it coming from?

Most believe that laundered funds are pouring in from foreign sources. I posit that these donations are coming from wealthy "friends" who entered Obama's orbit when he was quite young.

When Obama went to Occidental College in Los Angeles (a private school for rich kids who don't have the grades for USC), he befriended several affluent foreign students, among them Mohammed Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid. In 1981, as Obama made the transition from Occidental to the more prestigious Columbia, he celebrated by taking a long vacation in faraway lands -- specifically in Pakistan, where he visited with the families of Chandoo and Hamid.

No-one has any idea how Obama -- who claims to have been on food stamps not long before -- managed to afford such a trip. Here is a description of Obama during his Columbia period:
There was a time before Obama wore tailored suits - when his wardrobe consisted of $5 military-surplus khakis and used leather jackets, and he walked the streets of Manhattan for lack of bus fare.
How then, could he pay for that very expensive education at Columbia, not to mention a summer-long world-wide jaunt? (Oxy isn't cheap either.) After graduation, Obama took a $12,000 a year job as a Community Organizer. If he had relied on student loans to pay for Columbia and Oxy, how did he intend to pay back the money?

Strangely, Obama did not mention the Pakistan foray in either of his memoirs. When pressed, his campaign has offered these words of explanation:
In 1981, Obama transferred from Occidental to Columbia. In between, he traveled to Pakistan - a trip that enhanced his foreign policy qualifications, he maintained in a private speech at a San Francisco fundraiser last month. Obama spent “about three weeks” in Pakistan, traveling with Hamid and staying in Karachi with Chandoo’s family, said Bill Burton, Obama’s press secretary.
"Enhanced his foreign policy qualifications" seems a rather grandiose way to describe hanging out with a couple of party-hearty college buds. On the same trip, he also visited Hyderabad, India, home to another pal from Oxy, Vinai Thummalapally.

Oxy, in my view, holds the key to this mystery. During his time there, Obama appears to have made contact with a professor of Politics who was one of the CIA's chief experts on the Soviet Union. This same prof was also, I am told, an associate of Zbigniew Brzenzinski, later to become Obama's foreign policy mentor. (Zbig probably hooked up with Obama at Columbia.)

Could this spooked-up "educator" have paved the way for Obama's trip? Did something more than the travel bug prompt the journey?

It may seem, at first, quite absurd to speculate that the young Hawaii-born Oxy student had been recruited into the American intelligence apparat. The seeming absurdity of that idea lessens when we consider these factors:

1. In 1981, Pakistan was under martial law, and U.S. travel was discouraged or forbidden. At the very least, we can say that a trip to a strife-torn forbidden zone would have constituted quite an adventure for any young man. So why does Obama refuse to mention this adventure in his books?

Think about it: If you were writing an autobiographical work, wouldn't you want to fill it with dramatic incident?

2. At the time, the CIA was offering clandestine support to the anti-Soviet "freedom fighters" in Afghanistan, who counted Osama Bin Laden among their numbers. Much of this support effort was run through Pakistan, using cut-outs.

3. Obama may have held an Indonesian passport, due to his Indonesian stepfather. This factoid is of unhealthy interest to those rightwingers pushing the "Obama as Muslim" smear. I'm not interested in that nonsense. I am interested, however, in the suggestion that a student holding such a passport could get into places where most Americans could not easily go.

A CIA-linked professor would have immediately understood that such a passport offers very interesting possibilities. For obvious reasons, the Agency likes to recruit people who hold multiple passports.

4. According to this right-wing-site,
One of Obama’s hosts in Pakistan is Muhammadian Mian Soomro, Obama’s senior by 11 years, son of a Pakistani politician and himself a politician, who later becomes interim President of Pakistan when Pervez Musharraf resigns in August of 2008. Soomro states that “someone” personally requested that he “watch over” Barack Obama, but Soomro will not name that individual - who today allegedly lives in South America.

It is unknown who financed Obama’s costly 1981 trip.
We have a bit more information from a Pakistani journal, here:
Soomro, presently in the US, his second home, said an American friend had told his father, Ahmadmian Soomro, about Obama's arrival in Pakistan and asked him to look after the American. Soomro's father was the deputy speaker of West Pakistan Assembly and had also later served in the Senate.

Ahmadmian Soomro had also served in banking industry and was considered a pioneer in cooperative banking. By the time Soomro's father had hosted Obama, he was only a college student who went to Pakistan on his way from Indonesia where his mother was working with the Ford Foundation's micro credit finance project. Also Obama's mother was a frequent traveller to Pakistan and according to Time Magazine, she had a little bit proficiency in speaking Urdu.

When Soomro was asked about the person who referred Obama to his father, he said he nowadays lived in some country in South America. He was, however, reluctant to disclose his identity, saying he will have to seek permission from that man before giving his profile.
So Obama's babysitter was "American" -- and, very likely, CIA. If you think that's a presumption, then I must ask you to consider the profile: This mysterious "American" was in Pakistan at a time when the country was off limits, he had befriended a powerful individual, he was later posted to South America, and Soomro now hesitates to mention the man's name. That resume seems very spooky to me -- and I'm not saying that simply because I write on Halloween.

Soomro comes from a famed political family in Sindh. (Chandoo is another Sindhi name.) Soomro has worked for a number of important banks in the Islamic world (including the National Bank of Pakistan, Faysal Islamic Bank of Bahrain and the Muslim Commercial Bank) and for the Bank of America.

Until 1981, the Bank of America partly owned the notorious BCCI, a money launderer's haven founded in Pakistan. American intelligence used BCCI as a conduit for funding the Afghan mujahadeen. However, I do not yet know precisely when Soomro worked for B of A, and thus cannot claim that he has a BCCI background.

Chandoo is now a financial consultant in New York. Hamid works for Pepsi. Both are major donors to the Obama campaign, and Chandoo has been identified as a "bundler" and fundraiser.

I am not painting a grand conspiratorial tableau here; we lack sufficient data. For now, I note only that whatever the apparently ill-to-do Obama was getting up to in 1981, it brought him into contact with the worlds of big money and, yes, international intrigue.

Is it too much to posit that the people he came to know then may be helping him today? Will these connections to the powerful sons of Sindh cause Obama one day to say "Peccavi"?

I have no doubt that many will scoff at me for bringing up these links -- now. Eventually, the scoffing will stop, and the digging will start. In this post, I have listed several places where you may want to begin the process of turning over the topsoil. I will soon list others.

Where did Obama acquire his CIA connections?

Through his mother silly. USAID, stints in Pakistan (although not circa Obama's trip). Someone noted that her "free spirited" itinerary through life mimicked that of a CIA field officer.

Surprised you didn't catch this before.

I predict: a narrow win for McCain. Much hilarity will ensue.

Joseph....this is just depressing.

Where were the inquiries on Pakistan before? Not you...just everyone.

And Odinga.

This is an interesting subject to me. While I have been deeply skeptical of the "Obama CIA" angle, who knows ANYTHING about him, and the financing of his schooling is a question.

I have wondered about his mother, Ann. It is constantly stated that she was a "commie" or a "fellow traveler", but with nothing to back it up but that some of her high school teachers were socialists (I went to Berkeley High for gawdssakes, half my teachers were socialists & commies, but I aint). NO ONE has provided anything of substance to show that she held such views.

Further "proof" of her being a so-called commie was that she took Russian language at UH. It has been pointed out that 'in the day', most of those Russian language students had starry-eyes for a CIA job.

Ann worked for the US embassy in Jakarta, and for USAID and Ford Foundation (both orgs widely regarded as CIA fronts).

Ann lived and worked in Pakistan from 1985-1986, on a "development project", and "as a consultant".

Ann traveled to some 13 countries, and had many multinational visitors to her office in Jakarta..."community leaders" from many countries.

When BO was playing with drugs as a teen, did not have particularly good grades, she told him that "with just a little effort, you can go to any college in the country". What kid with crappy grades can expect to go to any college in the country?!

As for being unable to travel to Pakistan in 1981, I cannot find ANY info to back up the claims being made about this. In 1981, the US made a deal for $3.2 billion in military aid to Pakistan.

All in all, I'm unsure what to make of it, but I'm not ready to automatically buy that Ann was a commie. Maybe she was. Maybe CIA. Maybe just a woman who found it more compelling to spend nearly three decades obtaining a PhD in jungles, foreign countries and working with foreign banks and organizations than raising her son.

I dunno.

Sounds like there is a task here for Ex CIA agent Larry Johnson over at No Quarter.

Joseph Cannon said...

Johnson was an analyst, not an operative. Still, the fact that he has not talked about this stuff is...interesting.

Of course, if Soomro's American buddy was/is a NOC operative, Johnson could not discuss the matter.

Many CIA operatives use non-government covers. Valerie Plame-Wilson is a good example.

One of the motives for bringing foreign-exchange students (like Barack Sr.) to the US was to develop contacts in "non-aligned" nations.

Obama's mother met Barack Sr. in a Russian language class at the University of Hawaii. In 1960-61 anyone studying Russian was either working for the US government or being watched closely by them.

I need to get my tin hat before I go any further.

By the way, I'm surprised that none of my readers caught the "peccavi" reference. It goes to my all-time favorite pun.

If Stanley Ann Dunham was working NOC for the CIA then socialist/communist ties would be be a definite plus.

Her connections to that world (assuming they existed) would provide her son with the same access.

The CIA recruited young and built NOC identities. They still do.

The CIA has always been involved with multinational corporations.

The idea of Obama having CIA ties shines new light on some of his big money backers and neocon endorsements, doesn't it?

The media is too enamored. I think it will be a long time before they start publishing much that's critical of him. The campaign finance scandal will probably be largely ignored, much as the caucus fraud has largely been ignored.

There's also something different from W. It has to do with Obama's perceived magnetism and charisma (basically stemming from NPD). There's also Obama's membership among the elite - his behavior, speech, etc. convey all the right markers (for the elite to identify him as 'self'). Though W went to Yale, the elite never consolidated around W in the manner of Obama. All this will tend to insulate him from criticism in the MSM.

I think Obama might start off in office somewhat cautiously. If and when criticism starts to arise, he may undertake various 'bold' moves, leading to new rounds of swooning and effectively squelching dissent.

So much of what has happened up to now is utterly predictable if you have much experience with people with NPD (and the effect it has on people around them). Not everyone with NPD is this effective - but at least some are. It's the elephant in the room that's invisible to most of the commentariat. People are patching together explanations for this or that element of Obama's behavior or success, but they're largely missing the core.

And of the people who are raising the issue of NPD - many aren't credible. Part of the problem is that many people have been loosely throwing this label around whenever there's a politician they dislike (so folks just starts taking it as a smear). Part of the problem is that it's being raised predominantly by the extreme Right (with an established history of being incorrigible liars). Part of the problem is that most people don't have a lot of personal experience with it - so they take the term as merely being equivalent to arrogance and vanity (where almost all politicians have some level of arrogance and vanity). On top of this, some of the people raising it are nutsoid. I find it all quite frustrating.

On another note - though I wouldn't be surprised if quite a lot of money was coming from overseas (e.g Europe by and large is head over heels), you don't need a few major donors. I think it's likely more dispersed - quite a lot of people making fairly large illegal contributions (over the campaign limit). The money adds up pretty quickly.

On the topic of Pakistan. Obama's mother worked for the Asian Development Bank in Pakistan (she started working there in 1986 or 1987 - Obama's trip was in 1981). I don't know when she first started traveling there. There was probably a shared long-term interest in Pakistan. On the implications of this - I tend to side with elliewyatt.

Obama wasn't poor. As you probably know, his grandmother was Vice-President at the Bank of Hawaii (I think she'd also been a bank vice-president in Washington State, before the family moved to Hawaii), and his grandfather was apparently manager of a large furniture store. Based on their occupations and positions, the family income would have placed them in the top 5% within the U.S. The food stamps were being received while Obama's mother was getting her PhD (Obama's grandmother and grandfather were supporting the family - since Obama's mother was a doctoral student, her own income, technically, was low enough to apply for food stamps - one can argue about whether this is what the food stamp program was intended for).

From wiki:

"The Peoples' Friendship University of Russia is an educational and research institution located in the South of Moscow. It was founded in 1960 as Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University. Its stated objective at the time was to help nations of the Third World, mainly in Asia, Africa and South America, at the height of the Cold War by providing higher education and professional training, but some students also attended from the developed countries.

[...]

The stated purpose of establishing this university was to give young people from Asia, Africa and Latin America, especially from poor families, an opportunity to be educated and to become highly qualified specialists. However it was thought in the Intelligence Community that the University was a front for a KGB Training Facility especially for terrorists (such as the PLO, Islamic Jihad etc)

What year did Barack Sr. come to the US?

Wasn't it 1960?

BTW - Assuming Stanley Ann and/or her son were involved with the CIA they (the CIA)will never admit it, nor should they.

That means we can go whole-monty with the tin hat stuff without fear of being proven wrong.

I have always believed this election was McCain's to lose, once Edwards was forced out. Clinton would have made it very competitive even before the economic meltdown, but Obama is as close as he is because of the economy.

However, all of the money he's throwing away just to stay competitive with McCain really tells the story, and that he is a weak candidate.

The best thing that could happen to the Democrats is if McCain wins. Then we can come back with a strong candidate in four years (and be spared the prospect of Mitt or Jeb).

In regard to Obama's being a landslide certainty.

If you look at his behavior over the last couple of days ya really gotta wonder. If you were that far ahead in the polls would you throw money around (even if you had it to burn) on a 1/2 hour hagiographic tribute to your own awesomeness? Wouldn't you want to start spreading that money around to other candidates? Candidates that might be your future assets? Would you under ANY circumstances force yourself to campaign with that odious Clinton guy? Would you be crisscrossing Ohio, a state you supposedly had wrapped up? Would you bring out that stinker from the ancient regime, Colin Powell, to counteract the star power of Joe the Plumber.

I am probably hallucinating but I see a whole lot of hail mary passes here

What is telling in northern Nevada is after Obama visited Reno last weekend, he has not had ANY surrogates campaigning up here on his behalf, and it doesn't appear he will have any, either. In 2004, John Kerry had surrogates right up through the final weekend. Outside of having Bill Clinton here almost two weeks ago, not a single surrogate has been here for the Obama/Biden team. What surrogates he had came early in October--a big mistake.

John McCain, on the other hand, has had surrogates up here in the final days. It was Palin, and then today he had Mitt Romney, Jon Voight, and John Ratzenberger. Palin's parents and in-laws are in the area. And then, to cap it off, Palin will be in Reno on Monday night and will make a final stop in Elko.

I really believe in the end Obama will come up short.

myiq2xu~ Obama Sr. came to the US in 1959. One of the sponsors of the project was Harry Belafonte, whose politics were known to some at the time.

Many claim that Frank Marshall Davis and "Gramps" Stanley became friends sometime before BO returned to Hawaii in 1970 at age ten.

I do not think so. When Obama Sr. arrived in Hawaii, there was a newspaper article about him, as the first and up and coming young man destined to be an important part of the shortly to be independent country of Kenya- some heavy communist issues & interest related to that.

I suspect that Obama Sr. would have been of INTENSE interest to Frank Marshall Davis. I think FMD well would have looked up and met Obama Sr. in 1959-60 and had interesting visits and discussions with the college "gang", including Ann.

Perhaps "Gramps" Stanley met Frank Marshall Davis through Ann and Obama Sr. in 1960.

Speculation, of course, because we don't know the actual truth. But I can't imagine how else Stanley would have met FMD. I lived in the complex that FMD lived in 1969-70.

G~ My research shows that Ann worked in Pakistan 1985-86 "on a development project" and as "a consultant". Took me ages to find that she worked for (I think it was called/or similar) The Agricultural Bank of Pakistan.

I don't think you are correct that the Dunhams were particularly well off. Madelyn was a teller for awhile, then became VP of a BRANCH, not the entire BoH. I lived in HI at the time, and it was very expensive to live there...salaries did not even out the costs of shipping everything in... lamps, toilet paper, soap, shoes, detergent... everything.

How did Barack afford the very elite academy Punahou school? Supposedly, partly by "scholarship" promoted by Stanley's previous employer. Hmmm.

Half way through my change from a Hillary Clinton supporter to a Barack Obama supporter it occurred to me that Obama has one pressure on him that no other candidate has....the pressure of the souls of millions of blacks who have waited 350 plus years to see a black President of the United States.

I believe in NO way will President Obama let them down. If he becomes the black George W. Bush, he'll smash the dreams of an entire race for the next 50 years. Middle aged white guys like me have broken every barrier since way before I was born. They're a dime a dozen. I never rode my bicycle down the street doubting the worth of those of my skin color.

But starting November 5th, 2008, a black child will never have to think they're a 2nd class citizen. And I believe every day of the Obama administration, Barack Obama will feel the pressure to be good, no, to be great! And subsequently, my family and I will benefit from it too.

I for one certainly do not rule out the possibility that Joe raises here.

However, it raises the question, is that a bad thing? For it answers many of the lacunae of interest in BHO's biography in a way that absolutely refutes the 'he's a radical' notion-- just like the old tv show, he was an (apparent Communist) 'radical,' but for the FBI, er, CIA.

For the same thing can be, and has been, said about Bill and Hillary Clinton. Several of Bill's biographers state as fact that he was recruited at Georgetown or earlier, one or more referencing agency insiders that had seen Bill's '201' (personnel) file.

Now, if I recall correctly, Joe has a good opinion of Clinton's presidency. Please correct me if that is wrong.

Certainly, one cannot seriously posit that anyone in such a position ought to fully disclose it to the American public? And since there would be a need to maintain secrecy, of course, there would be puzzling and inexplicable circumstances that would remain mysterious unless this underlying fact was disclosed.

It's exactly how Clinton's travels to Eastern European Communist countries while (spying?) 'protesting' our country on foreign soil (in England) was done without apparent financial means of travel.

Fascinating article Joe. What I remember about Obama and the family with a specific focus on the CIA explains more. I've mentioned many times on your website about my past memories so I'll spare everyone the pain. However, my crystal ball (I could give detail but won't) suggests that we'll all witness an explosion of information showing CIA links to many things including 911 and those involved who may also include "you know who"!

And guess who also applied to Patrice Lumumba University, back in 1956 or so? Lee Harvey Oswald.

Got to be a good conspiracy theory here someone where.

Why I think Barack Obama Sr. (obvious future figure in Kenyan gov't. after upcoming independence from UK in 1963) was of intense interest to Frank Marshall Davis in 1959-60, and why Davis would have sought out Obama when a Honolulu newspaper wrote an article about him in 1959 (why I think Stanley and Ann met Davis in 1960 through Ann's classmate, Obama):

Barak H. Obama's July, 1965 paper published in the East African Journal, titled "Problems Facing Our Socialism"-

1. Obama advocated the communal ownership of land and the forced confiscation of privately controlled land, as part of a forced "development plan", an important element of his attack on the government's advocacy of private ownership, land titles, and property registration.

2. Obama advocated the nationalization of "European" and "Asian" owned enterprises, including hotels, with the control of these operations handed over to the "indigenous" black population.

3. Obama advocated dramatically increasing taxation on "the rich" even up to the 100% level, arguing that, "there is no limit to taxation if the benefits derived from public services by society measure up to the cost in taxation which they have to pay" and that, "Theoretically, there is nothing that can stop the government from taxing 100% of income so long as the people get benefits from the government commensurate with their income which is taxed."

4. Obama contrasts the ill-defined and weak-tea notion of "African Socialism" negatively with the well-defined ideology of "scientific socialism", i.e. communism. Obama views "African Socialism" pioneers like Nkrumah, Nyerere, and Toure as having diverted only "a little" from the capitalist system.

5. Obama advocates an "active" rather than a "passive" program to achieve a classless society through the removal of economic disparities between black Africans and Asian and Europeans. "While we welcome the idea of a prevention [of class problems], we should try to cure what has slipped in .. we .. need to eliminate power structures that have been built through excessive accumulation so that not only a few individuals shall control a vast magnitude of resources as is the case now .. so long as we maintain free enterprise one cannot deny that some will accumulate more than others .. "

8. Obama strongly supports the governments assertion of a "non-aligned" status in the contest between Western nations and communist nations aligned with the Soviet Union and China.

Regardig "the "peccavi" thing"...

Mighty interesting, but all I know is that I have a herd of 12 peccaries in my yard at the present moment. One has made the destruction of my front gate his life's mission.

The herd has punched through the base of the siding to nest under MY home, scratch their itches dislodging my plumbing, ducting and wiring. They chow on my plants and chew on the garden hose.

Should I spread the wealth to the peccaries or repel them with bottled coyote urine product?

Well. I find now that one can buy PUMA/Mt. Lion urine product to use as peccary (javelina) repellant.

I'm gonna order some and have it overnighted. Should have it by Tuesday.

I think that if BO were to write a TRUE, COMPLETE book of his life, including Ann's life & travels, F Davis's, the trip to Pakistan, how he met and worked with various "associates" throughout his short life, etc., it would be a fascinating book, unlike the fantacized, romanticized clap-trap thrust out there so far like so much pig feed.

Maybe it could include some stuff about his Columba years. And about his realization, confrontation and acceptance that Frank Marshall Davis was his father as written in his published poem.

Did I forget this(?):

I think it's more useful to try to focus on what changes will ensue in the way the State puts itself across in America, than on this sort of detail. Of course Obama is a lying crook. All politicians are. What else is new?

As Edward Bernays said, the authorities use more propaganda between elections than at them. Perhaps the rulers believe that at this current time in history, the installation of a 'light-bringer' president would help them effect shifts in that propaganda.

We are talking of a period where America is fighting (and losing) two unwinnable foreign wars, where a major (probably nuclear) attack on a Middle Eastern country or two may be around the corner, and where Ephraim Halevy has called for world war and major cultural changes.

It's obvious that the financial turmoil will be used to bring about major changes in the way people are forced to live...

If electing Obama fits into the kind of ideological engineering that's afoot, then no story about how he lied about being in the New Party is going to turn things around. Forget the media and get onto the big story. Context, for goodness sake! Real historical context. What's going on in the world - that sort of stuff.

On the narrow point of a 'weak' president, I recall rather Clinton, who was weakened to the point where a slight touch would have pushed him off the edge...an extremely useful position for him to be in, when Middle Eastern negotiations had reached a certain stage.

But that analogy only works up to a point, because the scale of the economic depression that's opening up is more comparable to the 1930s than any time between then and now.

As for the theory that if Obama wins the election the mainstream media will move into investigation mode, that's an interesting suggestion, and you may well be right. But the question is, to what end would they do that?

It won't be because some journalists are honest and committed; nor because lefties hear the penny drop and suss that an Obama presidency hasn't brought about a hippy utopia. If it happens, it will be decided at the top. Most likely, if it happens, it will already have been decided at the top.

I don't believe a switch will flip. I believed that when the GE started. Then I understood the fix: Obama is Jr.jr They picked him from the other side of the isle just to confuse us. But make no mistake: the same people who fronted W are fronting B0. No investigation. Ever.

Indeed. And it couldn't be otherwise.

What annoys me is that some people seem to be anxious to get (often unpaid) 'jobs' for themselves as diggers into Rezko details, etc. etc., or whatever, under the new presidency. So Obama's a crook. Yawn. What about the big picture?

I saw the term 'American public' used above. One can use that concept in a way that bolsters parliamentary democracy and all that bullsh*t; or one can use it in a way that seeks a grip on what kind of social conditions really exist, where they're going, and the role of propaganda, mindcontrol, capitalist spectacle, call it what you like.

The fact that within a year scores of millions of people in the so-called 'advanced West' may have lost their jobs and homes, and be living in conditions at least as bad as those of the 1930s depression, is surely part of the picture.

The idea that a clean president who didn't take backhanders as 'campaign contributions' wouldn't allow the above to happen would be ridiculous.

The idea that anyone could use the presidential office to fight against those who control America is equally ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong. I love a scandal. I love to see some politician, judge, etc., shown up to be a sleazy crook. I really do. I live in England, and I've enjoyed watching former EU commissioner Peter Mandelon get flak over his links with a Russian mafia boss. I really do. But the point of discussing the trees should be to get a handle on the wood, surely?!

Thus I've noticed that the appointment of a guy from Marks and Spencers to run the British 'government's' relationship with the City of London hasn't received so much wry commentary or focus.

Ditto the fact that Britain too, just like America, is fighting unwinnable foreign wars at a time when the State has had to nationalise or near-nationalise large banks (paid for, of course, with further massive borrowing from private interests) to stop them going bust.

Did anyone else watch that criminal billionaire Michael Bloomberg (very interesting parallels with Moscow, where another criminal billionaire is also mayor) get given a platform outside 10 Downing Street in London, during some of the biggest financial shake-ups so far?

Underlining his 'friendship' with his fellow criminal Mandelson, he said the economy would "start shutting down" if people couldn't continue to get loans to buy new cars and stuff. Imagine that! Everyone's wellbeing is dependent on getting into more debt and buying unnecessary products! Otherwise we're all f*cked!

The term "holding the world to ransom" comes to mind!
