Plot to kill Obama?

(Note: I've lightly re-written this story to correct typos and to include a few more facts.)

This story is disturbing, and I should have commented on it earlier. You probably already know the basics: A 28-year-old ne'er-do-well named Tharin Gartrell was driving a rented pick-up truck in Denver around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning when he was subjected to a "routine" stop and search of his vehicle. The cops found two high-powered rifles, a scope, ammo, wigs, walkie-talkies, fake driver's licenses, a bullet-proof vest and some meth.
Law enforcement sources tell Maass that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."
How very cooperative! Tharin then obediently led the cops to his accomplice, the swastika-bedecked Shawn Robert Adolf, who broke his ankle while jumping out of a sixth-floor hotel window in an attempt to escape arrest. The cops also picked up two other helpers, staying at still another hotel...
A third man -- an associate of Gartrell and Adolph, Nathan Johnson, 32, was also arrested. He told authorities that the two men "planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech."

Johnson, along with his girlfriend, Natasha Gromek, are also under arrest on drug charges.
The trio -- or the foursome, if you count Natasha -- are said to be connected to a biker gang called the Sons of Silence; the group denies any linkage. Incidentally, Natasha may be the same natasha_gromek@hotmail.com who appears here.

Although a more coherent narrative may soon emerge, right now, little about this story makes sense. Do the cops stop every pick-up truck in Denver as a matter of routine? (Another story mentions erratic driving.) If the conspirators made such elaborate efforts to get away -- the fake licenses, the disguises -- why would Tharin volunteer the information that he hoped to kill Obama? And why would he give up his comrades?

Also, why did Tharin show his real Driver's license, which was expired? Why not use one of the fakes? If he didn't consider the fakes convincing, then why have them at all?

To make matters even more bizarre, the authorities are now saying that there was no actual assassination plot:
...the U.S. Attorney's Office deemed that there was insufficient evidence to charge them with conspiracy, making threatening statements, or other national security-related crimes.
"Please understand that the law recognizes a difference between what we call a true threat -- that's one that can actually be carried out -- and the reported racist rantings of drug abusers," Eid said. "The jargon for this sometimes is, 'It was more aspirational than operational.' In this particular case, there's insufficient evidence that there was any kind of plot or conspiracy."
In jail, Johnson was asked by a reporter if he felt there was a plot to kill Obama.

Johnson said, "Looking back at it, I don't want to say yes, but I don't want to say no."
Fake licenses, wigs, high-powered rifles...? Sounds like a serious plot to me. Johnson certainly sounds serious in the interview here. Both Johnson and Adolf were staying in fairly nice hotels -- not four-star accommodations, perhaps, but certainly not the kind of fleabag motels one would associate with these lowlifes.

Why were they in Denver? What was their source of money?

(Added note: A readers reminds us that the trio had to book well in advance to get any kind of rooms in Denver at this time. Johnson says that he was privy to, but not part of, the plot. Then why did Tharin finger him? And what were Johnson and Gromek doing in that city?)

Tharin's story reminds me of those bizarre incidents in which Lee Harvey Oswald (or a double) is said to have made himself as obnoxious and memorable as possible.

The men are also suspected of taking pot shots at Federal buildings in Denver. (Scroll down.)

Let us recap.

We have three armed knuckleheads outfitted for murder and equipped for either a getaway or a shoot-out with the cops. The youngest of these knuckleheads is stopped and, knowing that he is already in trouble for weapons and drug charges, gets himself into even hotter waters by needlessly confessing to an assassination plot, and divulging the names and locations of his accomplices. That confession brings the feds into the situation. And yet, faced with what appears to be overwhelming evidence of a conspiracy, authorities chuckle and say "Boys will be boys."

The Washington Post reveals that Johnson and Gromek were staying at the Cherry Creek Hotel, where delegates and media representatives were staying. (So was Georgia10 of Kos fame. I still think fondly of her.)

You will recall that key Clinton delegate Bill Gwatney was murdered in the office of the Arkansas state Democratic party by another young ne'er-do-well named Timothy Dale Johnson, who sped off in a pick-up truck. Johnson is said to have been a disgruntled loner, angry after being fired from his job. But Gwatney (a former state senator) was no random target -- Johnson asked for Gwatney by name.

The Gwatney precedent suggests an alternative explanation for the Denver mystery.

Consider this notion: Perhaps Tharin and his comrades were actually intended (by unseen puppet masters) to target delegates, not the candidate. After learning of Tim Johnson's fate, Tharin got cold feet and decided that he didn't want to play the patsy role. Thus, he intentionally got himself arrested. Better a nice, safe jail cell than to end up as Tim did.

Let me emphasize: The scenario I have proposed is speculative and incomplete. I encourage others to poke holes in the theory and to offer their own suggestions.

Stranger still: Saleman Abdirahman Dirie, a 29 year old Muslim from Canada -- originally of Somalia -- was found dead in a Denver hotel room. Also in the room: Enough cyanide to kill hundreds of people. Dirie had no passport. The authorities have not revealed whether cyanide killed him.

Local reporters in Denver are talking about a "cover-up" in Dirie's death. The authorities in Denver say that they do not suspect terrorism, although the presence of so much cyanide sure has me thinking that way.

Omar Jamal, the head of something called the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, has taken it upon himself to act as a spokesperson for Dirie, whom he did not know. Jamal was convicted of using a fake passport and making false statements to get into the United States. So why is he walking around free? (For what it is worth, Jamal's nephew apparently had a strong connection to Al Qaeda.)

Is there a pattern here? Young men who make perfect "central casting" patsies -- swastika-adorned racist meth heads on one hand, and a "scary" Muslim on the other -- make their way to Denver and show definite signs of being up to no good. Yet the authorities downplay any suggestion of impending violence or an organized plot.

I have an uneasy feeling.

That is very disturbing. Now we have an open air stadium.

One clarification though, Somali it an utterly failed state, that means no passports or birth cert.'s or anything issued since 1991, except for fakes, bought in open air markets.

If you add the guy with the rifles who was checking into Pelosi's hotel, you can't avoid the conclusion that the technology needed for a major assassination attempt is not difficult to acquire in 2008 America.

These various people might each have been part of greater conspiracies, or they might have been suicidal "blaze-of-glory" attention hounds, or they might have even been innocent. Law enforcement should to be thorough in their investigations, but careful to recognize any of those possibilities.

OMG!!!!!11!! It's the return of the Clinton killing spree!!!1!!1

Seriously, just kidding, but *someone* is going to draw such an incongruous conclusion. Wait for it.

There is historical precedent for your spitballing:

Hey Joseph:
hese two posts in tmz comments add perspective on the Sons of Silence:
17. You dumbasses do realize that they are a support club of the Hells Angels? Those guys will burn a MC club tattoo off of you if you leave the club in bad standing.. and that is to folks that were once close to them. What do you think they would have in store for a bunch of mouthy TMZ folks? I just think it is hilarious that they want to tie those idiots to a club because they were wearing a support shirt. A support shirt doesn't mean that you are part of the club.. merely that you dropped $10 on a shirt. None of those fools were patch holders.

21. The Son's is not a "Support" club of the Angels, they are two seperate 1%er clubs. 1%er club are the top motorcycle clubs. They control any other club weather your 1%er or not, you still have to get permission to be a club through the 1% clubs. Support clubs of the Son's: American Iron is one that's local to them. The Angels have The Destroyers as their support club. Get the facts right, those guys are all about correct information and respect weather you agree with it or not. It's very serious to them.

Perhaps the club name was an attraction - so they bought the TShirts (online or elsewhere).

You pointed out that website link for Gromek-interesting...especially when you review the site creators cv:

That "poll" was from May 2003- is this the same person....hard to say.

Anyway- it is good to see you digging into this one!

Some times things are what they seem and no more. This election cycle has brought the nutcasess out but that's to be expected. I wonder if there weren't similar nutjobs at the other conventions that were missed by the cops because they didn't have the resources they have post 911?

ps- this article is a bit better with the details:

In the back of the vehicle, officers found two high-powered rifles, one with telescopic sights, a spotting scope, a flak jacket, camouflage clothing, a bulletproof vest, boxes of ammunition, three fake identity cards, two wigs, two walkie-talkies and a quantity of the drug methamphetamine, a form of speed known as crystal meth.

http://news.scotsman.com/latestnews/Nazi-link-in-39plot-to.4428733.jp

It notes that the fake IDs were in the back of the truck, so using their current IDs was their only option at the time they were pulled over.

Also- Johnson claimed to not be involved in the actually conspiracy- that it was Adolph's plot- who was the one they arrested at the hotel.

It is true that it is next to impossible to get a hotel room in Denver now-so it would have to have been set up in advance. I would also imagine it to be difficult to get much choice for several months, including the low end hotels. And - I would also guess that hotels choice had to do with location. Cherry Creek isn't next to Invesco, but it isn't very far, in the greater metropolitan area of Denver.

I don't know why erratic driving was enough to pull them over, but it does sound like Denver is on high alert and has been. Especially since the guy w/ cyanide "committed suicide" at the Burnsley two weeks ago.

Also-you forgot Fred Hutchins, Jr.- shot on the side of the highway in Virginia. He was Sen. Jim Webb's office manager - also considered a "rising star"...Jim Webb hadn't endorsed anyone, but Obama and he had history on the campaign trail.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/05/webb-affirmativ.html

Should also be noted that Hutchins had donated to Obama:
http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/contributions/fred-hutchins.asp?cycle=08

I don't know about your theory, but it is beginning to get a bit scary out there.
Remember in Dallas the security for Obama were ordered to stop searching everyone. That first article reminded me of that one.
Dallas - no less.
But -nothing happened.

Maybe, just maybe this is what the "OBama" campaign "WANTED" put out.
Now I know some may think Obama would "Never" do such a thing but consider this....

Who would benefit from a so-called aborted hit? Who would benefit from the public sympathy that may or may not result from the "Great" efforts of the Denver police in "Breaking" up this plot?

I find this whole episode suspect. Not that there are not some really sick people out there, but I find it odd that this cat would "Offer" information as quickly as he did.

Then again...Maybe there is some type of plot and this "Dude" really didn't want to be an Oswald.

Just saying!

Neo-Nazis and Muslim terrorists. Where have we seen that before? Let's see.. the Oklahoma City bombing, McVeigh, Strassmeier and possible Iraqis... and 9/11, Atta and his possibly neo-nazi German and Euro buddies. Looks like a pattern doesn't it? And a Minnesota connection? No surprise there. What is going on in Minnesota that needs to be covered up? The FBI covered up something in Minnesota related to 9/11. And now McCain is about to get himself a Minnesota VP possibly? Wasn't Obama blowjob guy Larry Sinclair from Minnesota? WHAT'S GOIN' ON IN MINNESOTA?

You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to realize something seems really fishy.

Recall the Roger Von Bergendorf Las Vegas ricin case from Feb/March this year?

He'd rented a Las Vegas hotel room and was hospitalized in a coma from ricin poisoning for a month.

In his room was found: several vials of ricin (classified as a biological weapon), castor beans from which it is made, a copy of 'Anarchists Cookbook', tabbed on the ricin section, four firearms and a dead dog.

While he was still hospitalized in a coma (before they could question him) and before searching where he lived and his four storage untis, aurthorities said:

Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell said Von Bergendorff “is not considered a criminal suspect.

Lombardo said: “I don’t want to make any conclusions with the anarchist-type textbook. It doesn’t make you a terrorist because you have this type textbook. It doesn’t make you a terrorist if you possess firearms.”

Timothy McVeigh was just a guy with some fertilizer. The Unabomber was just a guy with a roll of stamps. Brett Kimberlin was just a guy who wrote musical songs.

Interesting how few of these things see4m to be taken seriously before people are killed UNLESS there's a Koran found. Remember the kids in Florida?

Joe: I have watched you go from a valued and wise sage on the problems facing our country to one of the hysterical critics of Barack Obama that I have read in recent months...and, believe me, I've read many. As I sit here listening to his acceptance speech tonight in Denver, I say, best of luck to you Joe. I bid you adieu. Your time has come and gone. It is so appalling and yet sad to read you now. Be well but be advised that you have lost all credibility with this American.

Anon comes through with on-topic posting once again.

As far as Reddragon62 throwing out that the campaign wanted it....

Much like the powder letter to McCain, if it originated with the campaign the campaign would have made a much bigger deal out of it.

Strange though that it is being downplayed by law enforcement.

If two kids with playing cards can be charged with conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism

Why are the methheads, and the cyanide suicide downplayed?

No one's making the obvious L&O conjecture: Those fools are singing like birds.

Hasn't anyone heard of a plea bargain? They'd be in trouble for the guns and fake IDs alone, but saying they were there for an assassination...

The only catch is whether the other plotters will kill them first, or keep them out there and feed them disinfo to mess up the investigation.
