Clinton Derangement Syndrome: Take this quiz

In the past, we've taken a look -- wide of eye and slack of jaw -- at some of the more outlandish examples of CDS (Clinton Derangement Syndrome) to be found on Democratic Underground, the Cheeto, TPM and elsewhere.

Today, we will make a game of it. Each of the examples below comes from one of three sources:

A) The quote comes from a recent progressive source. (Use Google to check my work)

B) The quote comes from a 1990s-vintage conservative source. (Use Google groups to check my work.)

C) The quote comes from Coleman Francis' classic The Beast of Yucca Flats.

Your first task is to determine which quote comes from which source. Then you must determine which quote is the most insane. Mark each quote A, B, C, following the guidelines above. (Either make the mark mentally or jot it down on paper. I don't have time to install one of those widgets.)

Ready to play? Let's hit it!

* * *

1. "She makes even Leona Helmsley look frugal and fair with "the little people.""

2. "That Queen and Savior Hillary thinks that rules are for other people and not her. That is why I hate Hillary!"

3. "Only after it hit the media did old Hillary decide to return the drug money."

4. "Into the mud scum queen!"

5. "Did Clinton murder his own mother?"

6. "Kill. Kill, just to be killing."

7. "Dammit, where are those snipers when you really need one?"

8. "Note the suspicious ties between bush and clinton in "Mena"."

9. "Thats a lot of "carbon monoxide poisoning (apparent suicides)"

10. "Nothing bothers some people, not even flying saucers."

11. "The woman is so uncuth"

12. "I've always thought Hillary was a bitter shrew"

13. "doctors can't help her. Maybe angels, but not doctors."

14."There are obviously enough psychos for Clinton out there"

15. "A man runs, somebody shoots at him."

16. "the Clinton's took their lead from the bush crime family..."

17. "Are former "sex slaves" of Bill Clinton in danger of losing their lives?"

18. "Clintons = Bushes = Clintons = Bushes =Corporate Elites"

19. "Feed soda pop to the thirsty pigs."

20. "Its pitiful that people are even defending this travesty against civil society."

21. "Clinton is a good Republican."

22. "I used just dislike her. Now I truly hate her."

23. "Always on the prowl. Looking for something or somebody to kill."

24. "As many know, the efforts by the Clinton camp to move to New York and take over the Senate seat there...included the killing of JFK Jr to free up some real estate."

25. "WE need to investigate indite and imprison the traitors."

26. "...decades of racial prejudice and xenophobia."

27. "A fiend prowling the wastelands."

28. "lyin, cheatin, whitetrash."

29. "Bill Clinton doesn't matter anymore as a political leader."

30. "A flag on the moon. How did it get there?"

31. "Sorry to hear that when a push came to a shove in the voting booth, you voted for the pathological liar."

32. "Despicable. This is the worst thing I have ever heard her say."

33. "Another man caught in the frantic race for the betterment of mankind. Progress."

34. "One doesn't have to look too far into Clinton's history to find several bodies..."

35. "It's time for us to start talking about white-water, impeachment, rape-gate, monica-gate, pardon-gate, vince foster murder probe, and the list goes on."

(To read the answers, click "Permalink" below)

Here are the answers. Remember: A) is "recent progressive;" B) is "1990s conservative;" and C) is Beast of Yucca Flats.

1. "She makes even Leona Helmsley look frugal and fair with "the little people."" (A)

2. "That Queen and Savior Hillary thinks that rules are for other people and not her. That is why I hate Hillary!" (B)

11. "The woman is so uncuth" (A)

12. "I've always thought Hillary was a bitter shrew" (A)

13. "doctors can't help her. Maybe angels, but not doctors." (C) [I bet you marked this one "A" -- didn't you?]

14."There are obviously enough psychos for Clinton out there" (A)

15. "A man runs, somebody shoots at him." (C)

16. "the Clinton's took their lead from the bush crime family..." (A)

17. "Are former "sex slaves" of Bill Clinton in danger of losing their lives?" (B)

18. "Clintons = Bushes = Clintons = Bushes =Corporate Elites" (A)

19. "Feed soda pop to the thirsty pigs." (C)

20. "Its pitiful that people are even defending this travesty against civil society." (A)

21. "Clinton is a good Republican." (B) [Honest. That's a "B" answer, not "A"!]

22. "I used just dislike her. Now I truly hate her." (A)

23. "Always on the prowl. Looking for something or somebody to kill." (C)

24. "As many know, the efforts by the Clinton camp to move to New York and take over the Senate seat there...included the killing of JFK Jr to free up some real estate." (B)

25. "WE need to investigate indite and imprison the traitors." (A)

26. "...decades of racial prejudice and xenophobia." (A)

28. "lyin, cheatin, whitetrash." (B)

29. "Bill Clinton doesn't matter anymore as a political leader." (A)

30. "A flag on the moon. How did it get there?" (C)

31. "Sorry to hear that when a push came to a shove in the voting booth, you voted for the pathological liar." (B)

32. "Despicable. This is the worst thing I have ever heard her say." (A)

33. "Another man caught in the frantic race for the betterment of mankind. Progress." (C)

34. "One doesn't have to look too far into Clinton's history to find several bodies..." (B)

35. "It's time for us to start talking about white-water, impeachment, rape-gate, monica-gate, pardon-gate, vince foster murder probe, and the list goes on." (A)

Which quotation was the most deranged? For me, it's a toss-up between "Flag on the moon" and the line about Clinton murdering his own mother. But you may have your own thoughts on that score.

I thought I'd chime in with a different perspective. I'm a military mom; my only son is currently on his second tour in Iraq. His first tour was quite an eye opener. Some of the things he wrote about in his letters horrified me, and when he came back home I begged him to pursue a new avenue so he wouldn't get sent back.

But like many of the heroes serving there today, he told me his country needed him, and he would do all that is asked until they can ask no more. He will be voting this year through an absentee ballot, and he's voting Obama for one simple reason: through his firsthand experience in Iraq, he knows Americans can't afford another President who will wage unneeded wars. Many of his fellow soldiers feel the same. For them, their vote could be the difference between coming home to their families, or fighting for their lives in a country that does not want them nor need them.

I ask you to please reconsider. McCain has already aligned himself closely with the policies of the Bush administration, and he's made it clear that he wants a lengthy US military commitment to Iraq. As tensions in the region rise, I fear that a McCain presidency would not only mean my son will be sent on a third and fourth tour to Iraq, but that we'll also have a very real danger of falling into another unneeded conflict with Iran before his term is over.

Nice try, "Colleen."

Lots of other anti-Obama blogs have been printing carefully-worded letters like this. Usually, the writers pose as "regulars" on sites such as the Confluence, Taylor Marsh, and so forth.

Any writer as erudite as "Colleen" -- who displays an excellent command of grammar, and who makes no typos -- would be intelligent enough to know that this comment had little or nothing to do with the subject of the post. One "tell": Colleen knows how to use the semi-colon. NO non-professional writer uses the semi-colon properly these days.

The "different perspective" remark indicates that my original post had addressed Obama directly. But it had not.

My guess: The text was cobbled together in advance, and then someone hit a mass "send" button to a number of anti-Obi blogs.

I'll let Cannonfire readers know when I find another example of this particular astroturf letter on some other site.

Ah. It didn't take long.

Here is the same "Colleen" letter over on the Confluence.

The editors include this note:

["Colleen" is just another filter-clogger from the same suburban Porthland hivemind. Assume everything "she" says to be a lie, including "her" "son" in "Iraq'. DO NOT INTERACT, leave it to the netcops. -- RonK]

NICELY DONE JOSEPH!

Responding to the semi-colon "tell" with the full colon blast caused my bean soup to launch out a nostril!

what's the % of people who voted for Obama who did it because they believed this crap ? I'm sure it's less than the % of people who voted for Clinton because they wouldn't not vote for a black man.

I know it's hard to imagine for someone like you, but most people voted for Obama because they PREFER him, not because they hate Clinton or believe non-sense about her. You can start the list of lies about Obama too, it will soon get longer than this one.

no name, I rarely see anyone kid themselves as thoroughly as you have.

Look, I've been through this many times. How many times must I say this?

David Plouffe is Obi's campaign manager. When asked if racism would be a factor in the general election, he said no, because the only people whose votes would be affected by race were all on the Republican side.

Put "Plouffe" into the search engine above if you don't believe me.

So if you want to keep peddling this nonsense, you need to come up with an explanation for Plouffe's statement (with which I agree, incidentally.)

I have no problem voting for a black person for president -- have done so twice. But anyone who implies that I'm a racist if I DON'T vote for him loses my vote forever. TO that extent, race has affected my decision -- and the decisions of others. That's one large reason why Obama kept losing in state after state toward the end.

The Clintons were subjected to the most disgusting smear campaign I've ever seen.

How many people believed those smears? Quite a few.

Hillary had the majority of the black vote before the smear began. Once they started, her unfavorability ratings in the black community skyrocketed.

People believe lies. Smear campaigns work, and that's why crooked pols rely on them. If smear campaigns did NOT work, then President Gore would be enjoying the waning days of his second term right now.

But smear campaigns can also backfire. As Anglachel puts it:

"One question that no one in the MSM or the “serious” blogosphere has tried to answer is why have so many hard-core Democrats, people in the party for decades, rallied so strongly to Hillary’s side, their support becoming stronger and more obdurate the more she was declared a failed candidate? In most political races, the perception of being a winner or a loser will usually sway the voters, emphasizing the upside – like Obama’s big bump after Iowa – or reinforcing the downside – like Edwards never recovering after losing in Iowa. Hillary’s support increased the more it was accepted by the media that she had already lost. Take this phenomenon seriously because it did happen. When else have we seen this pattern in the rank and file? When Bill was under impeachment. The regular Democrats evidently know when someone is being railroaded by the media and they push back."

Man, I just had a flash of better-than-20/20 hindsight.

Would Hillary have had to put up with even half of the garbage that was heaped on her by the MSM this year if she'd had (someone like) Tor Johnson on her team? Just the sight of the gentle giant standing at Hillary's side would have sent Olbermann and Matthews running home to mommy.
