In 1973, a young Karl Rove wrote to a Nixon aide and outlined a plan to revitalize college Republicans. The plan involved raising funds through public showings of the film Reefer Madness -- an overwrought, under-budgeted anti-pot movie from the 1930s which had recently become a campy favorite. Young people filled theaters at midnight in order to giggle and get baked.
Why did Rove single out this film? Almost certainly because he had attended one of those screenings -- although it's hard to imagine such a dweeb joining the party.
