Gonzo in impeachment sights....but not before he resigns in August!

dr. elsewhere here

Count this as an update on my post from two down.

First, Representative Inslee (D-WA) is leading an effort to investigate impeachment of the AGAG. However, as I pointed out below, we really should not expect Gonzo to be around after Congress reconvenes in September.

Second, you have likely heard the apparent 'clarification' of the Gonzo's dissembling on what was actually at issue in the now infamous visit to Ashcroft's hospital bedside. Technically (and you know we're in trouble when a possible defendant in a criminal charge starts their argument with this qualifier), Gonzo wasn't lying because - it has now been leaked - there really were two programs.

Apologies; have no time to go into the details now, especially since they resemble all too closely that perfect analogy for all things Bush admin, Abbott and Costello's baseball routine. Who is on first?? For the best and clearest analysis of all this, do visit emptywheel; she's all over this like stink on DOJ poop.

I'll leave you all with this, though: Clever as Conyers can be, he has already penned a little inquiry to the AGAG, wondering if we can expect him to be as aggressive in investigating this leak to the NYTimes as he was when the warrantless wiretapping story was leaked.

Oh, this is just way too large for theatre. And the cabal only lost their rubberstamp Congress a little over six months ago. Not at all sure why some folks don't see where we are now as progress from where we were last October.

Sure hope the evil clowns have fastened their seatbelts; it may even be time to pull down the oxygen masks.

It's simple, innit? The surveillance program did not target terrorists alone; it was used to gather political intelligence.

Yes, that is speculation. But it is also what I have believed for a long time. And from time to time, in these pages, I have given my reasons for this belief.

If the Judiciary Committee can translate what many suspect into something proven, that's checkmate. Even the Republican Senators will want rid of this whole crew.

you're right of course, joseph. however, as emptywheel points out, first, it's not so much the domestic spying per se, but the inability of the data mining technique to respect probable cause.

but second, and possibly more heinous (smacking all the way of iran-contra), this would be in DIRECT DISREGARD FOR A DIRECT CONGRESSIONAL RESTRICTION.

bush tries to skirt it with his signing statement, but that dog won't hunt.

the pattern increasingly becomes so damn transparent, even if they refuse to voluntarily make their actions and documents transparent.

see how they repeatedly dispense wth competence and rational thinking, throwing caution to the wind to pressure their points forward and move out the dissenters.

paranoia strikes deep. it will be their undoing.
